just curious -- what flavors did people start out with? i am doing my research and hoping to make a switch soon. i see a lot of sweet flavors and coffee... but was it strange going from camels to butterscotch?

Not for me, but then I had a talk with myself in my head and explained to myself that in choosing to vape I was evolving past burning leaves into something totally different, a lot more advanced, healthier, way more fun and tastier :) TBH by the time I decided to quit smoking my taste buds were (and still are) pretty fried. I didnt smoke for the taste of tobacco. I smoked for the nicotine.

Thats one of the reasons why Ive stayed away from tobacco, because I want this to be totally different for me. Ive found some amazing flavors in Alien Visions Hype (peach schnapps or peach rings candy) Rootbeer and Craveloupe (canteloupe and melon), Atomic Cinnacide by Tasty Vapor (Atomic Fireball), Gummy Bears by Pink Spot, and Blueberry Honey by Vape Dudes.

If you stop to think about it vapers have thousands of choices of flavors while smokers are relegated to a couple of handfuls. Its kind of sad in a way but only helps to reinforce that weve made the right decision.

or do most people start with tobacco flavors?

I skipped the tobacco flavors completely. My first flavor was coffee. I knew the tobacco flavors wouldn't taste exactly like a cig and for me personally, it would make me miss the real thing, so I tried to separate vaping from smoking as much as possible.

I started with black tea flavour, then started adding either vanilla or fruity tastes to it.In he beginning I didn't like tobacco tastes at all.
Meanwhile (after 1/2 year) I am getting more into tobbacco tastes as they seem to be more complex/interesting.
However I still dislike tobbacco tastes that remind of an ashtray.

At the moment I am vaping american blend tobbacco mixed with cherry

When I started I ordered all menthol stuff, having come from almost 40 years of Newports.. and found out that I can't stand any of the menthol tobacco juices and that menthol used judiciously in some fruit flavors is good but totally destroys others for me. Today it's Raspberry Champagne, (fruit champagne so far is turning out to be my if-I-was-on-a-desert-island-and-could-only-take-one vape) Truth Serum from Rawr and DeKang cheesecake. None of which I would ever have expected I'd like. =)

Until I found out about El Toro I stayed away from juices trying to mimic cig brands. I thought they all tasted like an ashtray. It was also probably good to make the split from tobacco flavors to completely lose the analogs. I started with mocha, raspberry, and menthol and it worked; with 18mg juice I had no need to lose the vape.

The biggest area of concern was when I was out drinking, as I thought I would get very nostalgic about the analogs. Now that I have found El Toro (and I am sure there are a number out there that are good; after all there are like a million flavors out there) I can rest easy.

I swap between Hangsen's Watermelon and Cherry Cigar. I found them both awesome. Watermelon tastes simlar to Totally Wicked's watermelon. Cherry Cigar is a different story. Personally I'm not big fan of tobbaco tastes, but this one is just different. The cherry taste is very prominent and those two: cherry and cigar perfectly match together.
