What is the mindset behind draining atomizers?

Hummmmm...I ususally drain my 901 atty at night and that worked OK; but the past couple of nights nothing has run out. It started drawing hard yesterday so I sat it upside down again and still nothing came out. Today I blew on it and a bunch of dark liquid came out. Doesn't draw any better (well, maybe a little) but wonder why it wouldn't just run out.
