I plan to start vaping soon but I'm finding it hard to compile all of the information. Research for new ecig is overwhelming. I don't know if I want to start with a very basic setup or pay twice as much for a nicer setup.

I think I want to go with a start-up kit that mods can be added to. My budget will not allow me any mistakes. :)

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi Chuck,

I'll recommend you the same as for all my friends new to vaping ( after 1.5 y. of exp. )

* Each and one has their favorite combination, a good start for exploring will be = >

1. Get Variable voltage battery : eGo-C would be good cost-effective start.
2. Get 3x Vision clearomizer v3/v2 - each with different resistance 1.8 / 2.4 / 2.8
3. Get 2x 510 cartomizer - one LR and one regular (personally prefer Kanger Horizontal Coil Cartomizers )

All estimated : 45 $ (not inc. shipping )

* I do NOT recommend tank system ( eGo-T ) due to "learning" gap required for adaptation to it, example :
too strong draw or weak battery may cause leakage ...

Good luck.

Welcome Chuck:
I will second Vlad's suggestion, Ego-C starter Kit, w/ 2 1000mah batteries.
That is what I bought two weeks ago, Happy- Yea, I am thrilled with this setup. I bought the kit w/ 2 650mah batteries and then bought 2 1000mah batteries as backups- should have just got the bigger one to start with.
Ego-C, easy to fill carts, long lasting batteries- and they are so 'Standard' that many, many accessories fit right on them.
I bought 2 Kanger T3 Clearomizers and replacement attys (atomizers) last week for vapping at home. They hold 2.5 ml of juice and are also easy to fill and fit right on the ego batteries.
Use the ego carts for out and about, T3s at home. Loving the Vapping Lifestyle, and the little women's happier too.
My 2€ worth. Again, Welcome, and Best to You.

If your starter kit does not have to look like a cigarette to you, I recommend 2 eGo Twist or 2 eGo Spinner variable voltage batteries (which together will last you over an entire day between charges), an Ego charger, a USB wall adaptor, and 3 large capacity clearomizers or 2 Mini Vivi Nova tanks.

I recommend two batteries at the minimum. You will need a second battery to vape with when the first is being recharged. In addition, it's extremely prudent to have backup batteries. Batteries do fail, and you don't want any reason to believe that you need to buy another pack of cigarettes once you have quit. I know, I've been there.

Next you will need to order some e-liquid. I have recommended two juice vendors below.

You need not place your order with the below vendors, they are only recommended by myself as an example of an ideal and inexpensive starter kit. The listed vendors use genuine Joye eGo, Kanger, and Vision products, not knock-off brands whose quality may be subpar.

The following components from Altsmoke and Discount Vapors and can be obtained for under $100 before tax and shipping charges (Juice not included):

I pretty much concur with Baditude's recommendation. I just purchased pretty much that set up for both my brothers. Only small change was a Vision Spinner 1300mah and 650mah (1 each per kit) instead of 2 900 mah per kit.

Frankly, the hardware is the easy part. Finding juices has been the tough part for me, and the only advice I can give you on that is buy lots of samples, find one or two you like, then buy larger. Price per ml is higher on the samples, but if you don't like it, you have only a small investment in it.

I originally wanted the kit to look like a cig but after doing some research I can see that it's just not practical.

Your initial desire for your first kit to be the size of a cigarette is quite normal and common. However, most of us experienced vapors learned quite soon that the need to change batteries every 3-4 hours becomes quite frustrating, as well as needing to bring extra batteries along to continue vaping when away from home. These smaller batteries also severely limit the options for larger juice carrying devices.

The smaller batteries will work to help you quit smoking and get your foot into the door of vaping, leading the way to larger and more satisfying equipment. However, having been there and done that, we try to encourage new users to save a step in the progression by going with the slightly larger devices to start with. This can save money, time spent felt wasted, and early frustration from starting out with the smaller cigarette-sized batteries.

I will concur with HyperRealist for the kit suggestion, but:

I would suggest 2 Twists. 650 mah are just about as long a the standard 1100 mah, but you can dial in the volts to find your sweet spot. Just be aware the dial is hard to read. I use a sharpie to dot my favorite settings on the bottom plate.

Then get a third to back up your back up. A back up charger would be good, too, incase you're like me an had let 2 batteries drain before I knew I was reaching a crisis.

I graduated to 3.0 ohm standard cartomizers and 2 - 3 mil J-Tanks with spacers and fill tool. An extra investment but well worth it. I slotted my own cartos since I bought a bunch at the beginning. Don't forget a couple of drip tips

Or, just go with the 1100 mah kit and get a Twist as well.

I don't know why people recommend variable voltage to a noob. My first eGo were variable voltage and I just left them on high. Changing them made no difference to me. Al 3 setttings were exactly the same.

The price difference between a fixed voltage eGo battery and one with variable voltage is small. Many people DO find that having the ability to change the voltage makes a difference in the quantity and temperature of the vapor, and minute changes in voltage can have a positive influence in the flavor production of certain flavors.

For instance, on my variable voltage device, I have found that my fruit flavors are more pronounced if I set the voltage to 3.7v or less; any higher and they tend to taste burnt. For my coffee flavors voltages in the 4.0 to 4.8v range is best. And my cinnamon flavor is best at 5.8 volts.

A new vapor's taste buds have been damaged from years of smoking. (They will heal over time) So, for the first month or two, the sense of taste will be altered. I recommend that vapors exhale some of the vapor through their nose, as our sense of taste is closely tied in to the sense of smell. You can understand this better if you recall how food tastes bland when we have a head cold. The nose is not able to assist in the tasting of food during this time. So allow your nose to help you taste your e-liquid flavors.

Variable voltage is not for everyone. But having it available for a new vapor cuts out a step in the vaping progression and may help them to improve their vaping experience right from the beginning.
