i've been at this for awhile, as have many of you. what would you recommend as the best starter set-up for a new user based on your experiences? i'm just curious as to what everyone's thoughts are.

unless the newb wants something that looks like a cig, i would skip all propriatery batteries and recommend a $20 box mod and cartomizers, something that is so easy a monkey can use it. batteries can be bought almost anywhere and cartomizers skip the messy 3 piece process. if a battery dies they are only out $4 instead of $20. it's low cost, easy to maintain, easy to use, easily portable and the batteries last all day. and frankly i think they look cool in a dorky kinda way lol. everything i would be looking for if i was starting out today.

what would be your recommended set-up for a newb?

I was recommending the eGo, but I've found that even going that "advanced" tends to overwhelm some folks. I've since been recommending smoketip.com.

It's an 808, but they only sell pre-filled cartos at reasonable, non-kiosk, prices. This can get them started without having to dedicate a good portion of their lives to learning about PV components and liquids. If they start itching for something more fulfilling, they can always take a step up on the KR808 platform.

510 or KR 808 if they want something closer to cig size. Ego/clone if they don't mind something a little larger.

I think there's some merit to recommending a mod to start with since so many end up using one, but there's the initial investment, the added complexity and there are so many mods out there. It seems to me you need to vape a while before you can decide which mod you really want to buy. It's tough to make that decision even after vaping a while.

I think it really depends on what the person is looking for and what their smoking habits are. I've never recommended a mod for a new person because like Icoth said, there's the initial cost, and a lot of people have a hard time dealing with how they don't look like cigarettes. Even the Riva/eGo batts are hard for some people. I will usually recommend a KR808 or maybe the 510 if they smoke less than a pack per day. Those kits are just easier for light smokers to start with and the battery life will usually work fine for them. If they smoke a pack or more, then I suggest the Riva/eGo option because the battery life is longer and they won't have to fuss with multiple batteries. I know there are those on the forum who use the KR808 or 510's and smoked more than a pack per day, but they understand and are willing to rotate multiple batteries in order to have the look of an analog.

We all know there's a learning curve associated with vaping. It's not as easy as taking a cigarette out of the pack, sticking it in your mouth and lighting it. We've all dealt with leaking carts, cartos that smell burnt, batteries that don't charge, juice that tastes like .... and atomizers that die. It's a lot to take in all at once and for some it can be more frustrating than anything else. Then there's the added level of responsibility to take care of your equipment. None of us ever had to maintain our analogs. The most we had to do was buy the damned things and make sure we had a lighter handy.

Mods can come later if the person really enjoys vaping and wants to make that investment. I think recommending a mod from the start is a recipe for failure, even if it's a simple, cheap box mod.

I'd have to agree with many of those above. A 510 - even as simplistic and with the short battery life, is great for a starter as it's most similar looking to a cigarette. Maybe an eGo. If they want to continue to grow with it - then move up to mods when they are ready.
Once they have the liquid thing down, cleaning, stash size, etc. that's a lot of knowledge and quite overwhelming.
People that are not into researching on this forum and just start vaping, I don't know how they do it.

808 auto, standard if someone needs cig size or XL/Mega for someone who is a bit heavier smoker or not so tense on the size, with prefilled cartos for someone needing raw simplicity, moderate battery life, ability to vape hands free.

Riva 510 with Boge 2 ohm cartos for a heavier smoker -- best bang for the buck though that means the person must do their own fills and use a manual battery right from the get go. Carto filling is not hard, but does add something else to do, and manual batteries aren't as natural, as easy, as vacuum operated autos. (I know a lot of people are manual fans, but an 808 auto really works nicely if you haven't been really sloppy overfilling cartos.)

Greenworld G400 900 mAh as a "graduation present" if someone finds they like the 808 but just need longer battery life. On the other hand, by that time the person is likely fine to go the Riva/Boge route. I do find the G400 rubbery finish and slightly narrower form factor nicer to hold than a Riva.

Here is a cheap option to consider. PureSmoker.com - USA Electronic Cigarettes & USA Made eLiquid!!! The Ace kit.29.99. Also get an extended life battery. Think it's like 13 bucks or so. Then pick out a couple packs of cartomizers. They call them Atomz on their site. Should be 8.99 for a 5 pack prefilled. Also I recommend getting some blank cartomizers, and a bottle of juice. Kits work good, and the company imo, is a great one to deal with. Good luck!

I used to recommend 510 kits but the problem with that is most people don't want to mess with juice ,at least when they are new to it and are on the fence about e smoking to start with . The best luck I've had helping people switch from smoking was with a kr808 kit , because the cartomizers come prefilled and last a reasonable amount of time . Their is just to much of a learning curve with atomizers at least that's what I've found .

My first recommendation would be that a new user spend some time perusing the ECF library and reading all six parts of the "Wonderful World of Vaping". They will be exposed to all the types and the virtues and shortcomings.

The ECF Library

A quick vote would be the Ego kit since most of us end up there after charging 510 batts 6 or 8 times a day. That can shrink to charging one Ego batt a day, maybe two if one ran out first thing in the morning.

But if you want a regular PV I would have to say the Ego with cartos.

I would typically say 510, but these days eGo's are cheap enough and are far superior. However if it HAS to be like a cig ... 510 is still my favorite starter.

Oh also --

I agree with Davep and others that an education is the best solution to quitting smokes.I was lucky enough to have a friend buy a mall product first and we always compete so I went online and hit a homerun here at ecf.The 510 was great in its day for me but the ego would be my choice now or any of the ego like products for there ease of use and versatality. No one device will be anyone's end all, that would be like a prearranged marriage to me with out my first seven wall posters in the running for that marriage. Its good to ask questions but every time people feel like its acquistion when all your trying to figure out is how much and when they smoke. Its the oddest thing to me because they smoke in public but do not want to tell you their habits. These same people will tell you private thing you don't want to know .So its an ego like product for my .002 cents.

I haven't been vaping very long, but it seems every analog smoker I know loves my Tornado (ego) or my 510 mega enough that they order one. No one seems very "turned off" about refilling their own carts and most would rather refill rather than paying the higher costs of prefilled carts. In under a month, I have converted 6 people to vaping! Mainly on the virtues of vaping in general and the Ego/510 platform

It would depend entirely on the newbie.

It might be just about any decent model under the sun, depending on what they want, what their lifestyle is, how much they smoke, their budget, etc etc etc. There is no cut-and-paste solution, which is why we all like different things.

I've recommended everything from Kr8's to 510's to eGo's/clones, to mods, and even super-mini's on occasion. It just depends.
