Megan, what a beautiful kitty!! I had a neighbor who told her daughter that my cat was a "special" cat cause he had blue eyes, LOL. Your hustband sounds like a sweetie, all tough "dog person" but really a mushy cat lover!! So many people think cats are boring or they're not affectionate. Siameses often bond with one person, that's their human forever. They tolerated others just fine, but they know who their special person is. The love of a good cat is an amazing thing. <3

Definitely true. "Cushla" is Irish for "sweetheart" (technically that's chuisle, but we gave the vet's office a break on the spelling... no such cheat for Banphrionsa!) and we always joked that we named her before we got to know her, but she was sweet in her own way. I was off school for surgery and an eight month migraine when we got her, so she decided she was "my" cat first, and then Mom's for the 20 years after that... just switched her allegiance one day and that was that, I was suddenly second-in-command. And then right at the end, she gave my sister her "turn," which meant the world to my sister. I always laugh when people say that Siamese are standoffish or snooty... it's all an act! If any of us were out of pocket, we knew we had to call the cat to let her know we were okay, or she'd be a wreck. Of course, when we called, she would try to free us from the phone. :) They're *fiercely* loyal to their owners, but one must treat them in the manner that befits their station as royalty, after all. And try not to laugh too hard when their eyes cross as they're trying to do their best dignified sentry pose. They get offended when you mess up their mojo. ;)

I will definitely continue to share photos - my animals are the closest to kids I've got, for now, anyway, and mom has always proudly referred to our cats/my service dogs as her grandbabies. :) When we knew Cushla's time was getting short, we debated a bit about when/whether to get new cats, but now that my dogs are gone too, it was nigh *unbearable* around here without something four-footed running around. We just couldn't hack it. It's been four years now since I've had a golden retriever, and that's bad enough. (My choice, I could get a new service dog whenever I choose, but right now my health is such that I wouldn't be able to be fair to the dog, so I'm waiting... and you can't get a service dog placed if you have an existing dog in the house, so no service dog means no dogs, period; at least until I get a service dog first.

I have a friend that has gotten me interested in raising a puppy for Canine Companions for Independence after I retire. She has a Golden now that goes to boot camp at 18 months of age which is in February. It's going to break her heart but she got into it knowing she'd be giving Poppy up to go live an important life. She does have another dog, so maybe they raise the pups around other animals so that they're conditioned to them but don't want to place in a home with other dogs???

Anyway, if plans go as I'd like, I'll retire within 5 years, move to Denver area close to my youngest son and look into raising a service dog puppy since I have some experience in dog obedience. It's quite a process for the foster family so it needs to wait until I can devote 100% of my time. Seems like a way to do something worthwhile that I'd enjoy doing during retirement.

That's 100% correct. :) There are no restrictions to speak of when it comes to what you can raise the puppies with when you're fostering.... quite the contrary! As a matter of fact, the agency I get my dogs from (Paws with a Cause - they predate CCI by a handful of years) encourages fostering families to have other dogs around, and cats if at all possible. The dogs at Paws are born at the training facility (and sometimes reared there, when they're rescues - about half are) and there are about two dozen cats in residence. The cats have the run of the entire facility, the dogs do not. That's absolutely on purpose... so that out in the real world, the dog doesn't go nuts any time it sees a cat. Then they go to a foster family, hopefully one that has other animals, and then to boot camp, where they're back with the cats they remember as "littermates." There's a comical side effect to that - the PAWS dogs all think they *are* giant cats! They wash their faces like cats, try to thump their toys with their back feet like cats, the whole deal... but that also means no cat vs dog strife when they go to their permanent home, they just consider any other animals their buddies. The other animals usually need convincing, though. :)

The reason you can't have any other dogs when your service dog is placed with you is because the service dog needs to be the only dog that has your attention while you're still bonding as a team. Once that bond is solid and the dog "gets" that you're the pack leader so to speak, you can get another dog... but before that point, it's *such* an intensive process that having other dogs in the home would be both confusing for the service dog and unfair on the others. There's a special exception for if you have an elderly dog and are on the waiting list for a service dog, but I can't bring myself to rescue a 9+ year old dog and then be dealing with the death of that one so soon into a new partnership with the service dog... if I were ever to adopt an elderly dog, I'd want *that* dog to have my full attention, too. Getting old is tough, after all!

I hope you do get to foster some day. I'm immensely grateful to the families who fostered my furry boys - they did a great job, and I sent pictures every year. It takes a special kind of person to put in all that time and work for the benefit of someone you may never get to meet, and I've never forgotten that.

There has been talk about me getting a service dog but I'm resistant as just taking care of the cats' litter boxes is almost too much...Eh, we'll see, if I get much worse it may have to happen. Thank you for giving a perspective on the service animals Sean!! The PAWS dogs sounds like a good match for my home...but in the future...yes...*prays for remission*

Where in the Denver area Ms.Cruzer? Arvada is in between Denver and Boulder, essentially NW of Denver. :D

Right now they're in Lakewood but are just leasing a house. They're looking to buy somewhere this year. I think the sticker shock of the homes in Conifer and Evergreen have forced them to keep on looking. They are both telecommuters right now so have 2 offices in their home but his job with AT&T and Shell Oil will end at some point (contracted) so he needs to stay close enough to commute. He is a Cisco engineer so they decided Colorado's opportunities made it home. My DIL's family lives up there too around Co Springs. I'm coming to visit soon, just haven't booked the flights from New Orleans to Denver yet. :)

Seanchai - thanks for the clarification on the service dogs. I really think I'd like to do that some day. First, need to get rid of the ball and chain called my J-O-B.

Oh man, you're in NOLA? You need to bring a lot of good skin cream and start drinking water as soon as you get off the plane and don't stop and take real aspirin as often as you can as you are going a mile up in altitude from sea level. And bring a good sun hat. The sun is evil and the dry air even more so. 45% is very high humidity for us and that's when it is raining. Look online for safety tips for visiting Colorado so you know the signs of altitude sickness.

I give this speech to everyone coming here and one friend didn't listen. (She landed in Denver and went right up in the mountains without acclimating for a few days down here and they had to medivac her from Breckinridge down to a hospital in Denver as she was so ill from altitude sickness. :( )

In other news, Arvada is a lovely place to live (Lakewood is only a bit south from me). Though they should buy soon as housing prices are heading back up.

So if you come and have a chance to come visit please do! Just PM me here if you'd like. (As long as you are not allergic to five VERY friendly cats... )

I started listening to the progressive rock band Rush in the mid 70's and I never really stopped. Been a fan ever since.

Their second album has a song on it called By-Tor and the Snow Dog. In the song the two engage in battle and the Snow Dog emerges victorious.

When I signed up here I had that song on my mind so I figured what the heck.

You've got a deal! I'm not sure when it will be but I'll let you know. It may be as late as Christmas though. :( I'm waiting on a contract to go through or fall through by July 1 before I know when I can take off again (just got home from 2 weeks in Alaska).

Being the ever so creative man that I am I just went with some guys name in the local phone book.

My real name is Maurice Franklin Pudlo II., but Maurice Pudlo is easy enough to remember seeing as it's pretty close to my name.

I've had a variety of nicknames in my time, my grandmother on my mothers side called me Butch, she didn't like Maurice for some reason, then there was Cat (to at least one person I suppose I will always be Cat), in the army I picked up Sgt Satan (why exactly I'm not exactly sure), today I pretty much answer to Maurice or any .......ization of Pudlo.

Maurice
