You summed up with your own words what we know here very well, but under a different naming convention.

Smoking with lips, like when you normally smoke a cigarette, is sintethised here as "MTL", i.e. "Mouth to Lung" - as you aspire smoke in your mouth, and then breathe it down the lungs.

Smoking within the chest, we define it "DTL" - i.e. 'Direct to Lung" - as you breath the smoke directly into the lungs.
You'll find the majority of cigarette smokers are MTL, as it is a behaviour induced by the limited airflow of a cigarette. I was a MTL smoker.

Vapers don't all DTL vape. The type of device defines your style. In a DTL device, the airflow is so wide that you can actually breathe thru the device.

MTL is normally characterised by small airflow, high strenght nic e-liquids and low power, while DTL is characterised by large airflow, low strenght nic e-liquids and high power.

While the nicotine intake between the two styles is possibly the same, the vapor production, the taste / flavour profile, and the general look of it all, are completely opposite. The choice of style is something you have to decide for yourself.

I do most of my vaping MTL style. Some of my vaping is DTL (Gangnam) style, mostly to taste new flavours or to blow some clouds (it is truly fun), or to test some new vaping gear.

When I smoked, it was all MTL.

DTL smoking was limited to some desperate moments of my life, or after a long abstinence - think after two back-to-back flights, amounting to 12 to 18 hours without smoking.

I used my cheeks to create to create suction, and inhaled smoke directly into my lungs. Deep inhaler. People were often amazed by how fast I could smoke a cig.

We called it "Hot Boxing". On the school grounds after lunch no one wanted a drag off your cigarette if you did that!

I think the biggest difference when I smoked was my lips were puckered, like inwards compared to vaping . Even though I'm mtl, my lips are just placed and not puckered. Once you pucker those lips, you will then remember the draw on a cig.

My question isn't so much about if you inhaled into your lungs, it's how you took drags off cigarettes. Did you only inhale using your mouth/lips to take a drag or did you use more of your chest to take drags like you do with ecigs?
Mouth/lips for me.

It's not possible to draw enough air through a cigarette to dtl like a vape. Sure it's possible to let air in the mouth while drawing but not through the actual cigarette. I can reluctantly agree to call that a dtl smoke though. I suppose.

All cigs are not the same. The loose unfiltered air cured tobacco type cigs are fatter and looser than the "regular" filtered types, you can easily pull a lot of air through them, that was my experience then and I checked my memory by trying it earlier. Certainly not the same as a DTL vape, but as I did not keep smoke in mouth then inhale it can't be MTL.

Hard to do that with a "regular" tight filtered ciggy, I think you'd pass out trying. In fact that's the "red hot poker" experience many will have had hauling on a shared ... behind the school bike shed. Get as much nic in as possible quickly and stagger back to lessons!

When you took a drag, did you inhale/suck ONLY with your lips or did you take deeper drags breathing from deeper within your chest (as you usually do when you vape)?

As has already been mentioned, the 'only the lips' method is what's known as mouth to lung. That was how I smoked for 37 years. Never thought to try inhaling straight into my lungs, I think because there was enough throat hit from a cig to keep me satisfied with that.

Cigarettes are unbearably harsh when inhaled direct to lung. The predominant inhalation method has always been mouth-to-lung. The first vapes were all MTL because they imitated cigarettes. The DL thing came during the bigger is better phase of vaping when subohm coils were producing too much vapor to be contained in the mouth. But it's pretty wasteful since the lungs don't seem to absorb nicotine nearly as well as the mucous membranes in our mouths and noses. As technology improves we've been seening a return to MTL.

Lips and mouth smoking. When I first started vaping the only readily available vapes were mouth to lung. Then I discovered dl and switched to it immediately. Now I mostly dl except when vaping a pod. I finally found a pod I could dl with and it's my new out and about vape. At home I definitely dl and have no desire to switch to mtl.

I'll take your word for that. I tried a few unfiltered fags over the years like Woodbine etc, and a few German ones. Never found one I liked. I did smoke rollies for many years though. My dad was the Woodbine king. Best fags ever made he said. Connoisseurs of cigarettes eh how mad is that.

I smoked roll your own tobacco, and I rolled them pretty loosely. I smoked them mouth then inhale to lung.

My style now is really really loose mtl. Early morning I'm pretty much just breathing while vaping at the same time - I call it chain-breathing-vaping ;)

Joytech's eroll mac PCC kit is a mtl device. With low power - high ohm's and restricted airflow, it is designed for mouth to lung !. Without sealing your lips you can draw direct to your lungs if you wanted though. It depends how you want to vape, which would be determined by whether you get any satisfaction from either a mtl draw, or dtl draw. Based on your original post, i'd say your not getting any satisfaction from mtl !, it's up to you to decide.

I know folks who dtl cigarettes like they're smoking a……… well you know.
To me vaping mtl feels more natural where dtl is more like using a vacuum machine to get my nicotine, but there are times I use a vaccuuming effect because for whatever reason the mtl isn't keeping away that urge to smoke. Like those times when the boss is giving you the business for doing something the way they told you to do it, and when it didn't work give you grief for doing it that way.

I started vaping 5 1/2 years ago to rid myself of a 2 pack per day cigarette habit.

I vape mouth to lung, just like I used to smoke a cigarette. Since I was replacing cigarettes with vaping, it just seemed logical to vape the same way I used to smoke a cigarette.

The only folks I ever saw doing direct lung hit smoking were people that were inhaling some illegal stuff.

I don't know how this direct lung hit vaping got so popular, but my guess it started with people that were never cigarette smokers.

I am enjoying MTL again though, thanks to pods, and yea, that's the way I use to smoke too. As others noted, most ciggies are just too densely packed to DTL. I don't think I ever really thought about it, it just felt like the natural way to go about it, but as for vaping DTL...

Vaping DTL just became more natural over time for me as the juice got smoother thanks to VG and lowering nicotine levels, plus the vapor production and quality improved as gear improved. By quality improved, I mean more completely vaporized juice, less wet hits, less dry hits. Getting a hit of rich thick smooth vapor DTL is different than smoking, but is satisfying in a different way. Again, just what came naturally.

Hehehe my operations head was instructing one of her subordinates to buy cigarettes yesterday. I was like, "You don't smoke." She laughed and told me it was "For her business." Selling UP probably.

I told her when I quit I was a 3 ppd smoker. I got the line I always used to get as a smoker, "But you don't even LOOK like a smoker."

I don't know what a smoker "looks like" exactly, perhaps unhealthy but yea I did all these crunchy granola stuff like yoga, fasting etc. Minimal makeup. Apparently I still look like a sweet young lady who would swoon at the sight of a cigarette.

I do swoon at the sight of them, but not for the reasons named. Then she was like, "Your husband still smokes and you quit?"

I say what I always say. "There is no place on earth I can't get cigarettes so I just had to convince myself they were not for ME. Also, from my observations on the matter, there is nothing harder than dying from COPD. So yes, it was hard, but no harder than quitting smoking would ever be."

    Man, I love vaping.
