For really tight spots, one may want a higher gauge, which would require less turns to get the same resistance.

Thanks for your help. I just got a vivi nova - havent even tried it yet. I mostly use CE5s which I was going to try and rebuild this weekend. Was also thinking of getting some CE3 bottom coils - some folks rate em as great. I have a couple of 1100 mah Kgos and a 3-6 volt YJ mod. Hope I bought the right gauge - but then again it is pretty cheap I could get 32 and 34 - any suggestions for these clearos?[/QUOTE]

I re coil Vivi Novas and CE3s with 34ga kanthal.

Just ordered some 30 and 28 kanthal. Will see how it goes. Been using the stuff that came with my DID Clone. Not sure what it is but probably 34 nichrome?

There is a lot of talk about the benefits of bigger gauges, mainly more wraps on the wick giving more surface area to prodcue vapor, that i have been reading, so I want to give it a try.

The wire that comes with the DiD Clones is 32g nichrome.

I've used 34ga NiCr for the last few months but have switched to 30ga NiCr for my DUD. I find that the coil is less likely to blow like a fuse while breaking it in against a stainless wick. 30ga holds its shape really well. As long as you oxidize your coil after wrapping with juice, there won't be any odd taste.

I'm using a 11/12 coil which is 2.5ohm. Not a popular design, but its easy on the battery. I go through several tanks a day at only 3.0v on my Vmax. But I have the option of going up to 5.0v for a few mega cloud hits when I need it.

I know this is not a tutorial - sorry for posting this - but have read in posts that one would need NR wire too when recoiling? Is that needed for CE5s and VIVI novas?

Yes, at least on the center post wire of a vivi head. If you don't, the coil wire will heat up the rubber grommet causing a nasty taste. You don't need NR wire on a CE5 where you just slide the coil leads against the side of the center tube and pin. But, NR wire will deliver all the heat to the coil where you want it. The extra resistance of that 1/4" lead to the coil will consume a little of the power reducing the coil efficiency.

I had to vote other:?: ,as I would love an affordable  nickle platinum mix.

Enough nickle added to this 99.95% Pure platinum wire to bring the ohms up a decimal point, should do.

I currently use 28, 32, & 33 a1 kanthal, I like/prefer them all evenly. I find gauge is fun to play around with on attys to tune & taylor what I may seek in vapors.

I also have some 30 999 silver & 32 pure nickle no resistance wire for the occasions I need them. I find 999 silver is fragile floppy & weak, I tend to do a somewhat sloppy mini "western union splice"s & I am finding the pure nickle to be much more enjoyable to work with.

damthisisfun, I have no clue about ce5's, but with vivi novas "twisting the legs" to half their resistance(thus making them less hot) of the legs sections of the coil, does the trick for me. This thread http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/rebuildable-atomizer-systems/295410-vivi-nova-rebuild-tutorial.html is where I learned the technique from.

After not being really happy with the 36AWG Nichrome I got from LF because it was just too hard to work with, I'm about to start experimenting with 30AWG Kanthal A1 I ordered from Elite. It arrived yesterday, and the 2.5mm wicking I ordered from OKC to go with it will be delivered today. I'll be rebuilding Vivi and Thor heads with them.
I already have a screw-wound 5/6 (6/5?) coil using a standard fine thread 6-32 switch plate screw ready to go, so once the wicking arrives today I'll be "threading the needle" and see what happens.
I'm not sure what the resistance will be, though - a resistance guide chart for different wire sizes and number of coils would be nice, but I haven't seen one yet. I guess I'll just see how it goes...
If anyone can give me ballpark figures on assorted 30AWG Kanthal A1 coil wraps and their corresponding resistances for future reference, I'd really appreciate it. :)

Here's a very good calculator:

That's perfect - thanks! :)
After experimenting on my own yesterday, I found that a pre-wound 6/5 30AWG Kanthal A1 coil using a standard fine thread 6-32 switch plate screw and then threading a doubled 2.5mm silica wick through it on a Vivi Nova head is exactly 2.0 ohms.

A lot depends on the wick you using too,,, I would suggest making the same ohm coil using a say 30Awg Kanthal wire then make another coil with say a 34Awg Kanthal wire at the same ohms,,, and try vaping both and note the difference on flavor, the smoothness of you vape and see which you prefer,,, Lower 28&30 Awg wire isnt always the best for everything, all depends on your wick, ohms, voltage,Watts and finding the perfect set up for what your using. But Kanthal all the way is my preference.
