I used to bum cigarettes ALL the time.

I generally only NEEDED to smoke around 3 cigarettes per day (morning, lunch break, after work) but if I had them I could easily smoke half a pack. So I used to buy packs and give them to my wife, and she was only supposed to give me 3 per day.

So obviously, there were times at work I NEEDED a few more, and I would bum them. And obviously, there were times after I got home that I NEEDED a few more, and I would actually leave the house to go bum them.

But as far as I know everyone at work was happy to let me bum them, because I would always buy them a pack LONG before I had bummed anywhere near 20 cigarettes from them. In fact, I'd buy them a pack shortly after the first time I bummed one, just so we both always knew they were ahead of the game. And I always made sure they stayed ahead of the game. In fact, I think most of them really liked it, because they almost always would use it as an excuse to join me for a smoke.

And as for after work, well, as you can imagine it could have gotten ugly with my wife holding my cigarettes. And since I knew that, I never let that happen, and I never expected her to give me a cigarette when I NEEDED another one. So I would get in the car and drive to one of the local liquor stores or gas stations, and bum them from the people who worked there that smoked. And of course, I would buy them a pack as well, just like I did with the people I worked with.

But there were times that none of my "guys" were working, and I had no one to bum smokes from. So I would wait for someone to buy a pack, and hit them up for a smoke on their way out to the car. But I would ALWAYS attempt to BUY a smoke from them rather than bumming one. And I would always give them at least a quarter, and as the prices started rising I started giving them 2 quarters even. Most of the time they refused to take the change, which made me feel bad, and I would always try to insist they take it whether they wanted it or not. But I would only insist once, so as not to be any more of an ... than I was already being.

Yes, boys and girls, this is what cigarettes can do to you, and that was only the start of the kinds of things I was capable of doing for a cigarette when I NEEDED one. Those of you that would pick them up off the street if needed, yeah, I was right there with you.

And through all of this, remember, I only smoked on average around 5 cigarettes per day.
And no, I really have no pride, and yes, I have plenty of nerve.

My favorite coffee shop is my preffered hang out spot. I have many friends that smoke and I was always bumming to them. There was an added issue. The coffee shop is located a block away from a homeless shelter. It didn't take me long to build up a thick skin to people bumming cigarettes. I would only bum to friends and those that would pay for a smoke. I even got to the point of making them give me the quarter before I would give them a cig. I was really sick of it. Now, thanks to vaping, I don't have to be an ... any more.

Now they walk up and ask for a smoke, I say "I quit smoking, this is a PV." Then there is usually one of two responses: 1. A puzzeled look and then moving on 2. A few questions where I explain about e cigs and then they move on.

LOVE IT! No more bumming! Just a few sample puffs for my smoker friends.

yea i think everyone who smokes has bummed from time to time, some have picked up analogs off the street lol....me and friends at one time gathered all the cigs we could find in the saint johns university parking lot and put the tobacco into a "mega cigarette", alcohol will cause u to do crazy things....p.s. the mega cigarette idea was much better in planning than in action, even drunk it was the worst thing ever, comparable to smoking the smell of all of new jersey...

I was the one people bummed off of a lot. I didn't mind so much because I did the RYO thing. ;) But I deterred a lot of people because I rolled menthol tobacco in menthol tubes, full flavor. Too strong for most.

But, regardless, bumming has always been a pet peeve of mine. If you're a smoker, PREPARE! Cigs aren't cheap! Either buy your own or learn to roll! I can't tell you how many people I'd talk to rolling about who would say it's too complicated, takes too much time, etc. Well, time is money, so would you rather spend $6+ a pack, or roll a whole carton for $12? I'm also was one who'd get annoyed by smokers constantly needing a light, uh...buy a lighter! You can sometimes find them for 50 cents, at worst a dollar. Buy your own!

In the end, I lied a lot about having cigs. I'm a college student and you can only smoke on public sidewalks. At any rate, the college I go to is down town in the capital of my state. I got approached a LOT for a cig, and I lied every time and said it was my last one. I don't know these people from Adam, why should I hand out my cigs? If I gave them away every time I was asked, I could have easily handed out half a pack a day...over the course of a week that adds up.

Over a number of years, I attended the same conference at the same big city location and would go outside in the same place to smoke. At some point, the number of passers-by--street people--hitting us up for cigarettes or cleaning out the ashtrays even as we stood there skyrocketed. I don't think this was a function of changing neighborhood demographics. It was the g--awful increase in the price of cigarettes, well beyond inflation. A $.02 cigarette (where I got on) seemed like a small thing to give or take; likewise a $.05 cigarette (landmark jump to a buck a pack, around 1980 if I recall). But when we're talking about $.35 cigarettes, it's a different game entirely, isn't it?

I used to smoke Marlboro Menthol Lights, and I was definitely the target of my group of friends for bumming. It used to frustrate me to no end. I even think at one point it was more of a game to see if they could get one, or how irritated they could get me before I caved. Then cigarettes hit around $7 per pack of my brand and i switched to a cheap, nasty Swisher Sweet style cigarillo called Cheyennes. No one ever asked me for a cigarette in the three years I smoked them...I don't blame them. Now that I've saw the light and gone electronic it's started again. I don't really mind as much now, with how cheap the juice is, and at least it's healthier for the bums. :p

I can't say I've ever had to bum ciggs, but I've given out plenty. And at $7 a pack that's a pretty fair donation, lol. I had a few cases where club goers were desperate for a smoke (cause really.. how are girls gonna fit ALL that make up in those tiny evening bags and still leave room for a cigg case??) and offered $1, but I usually just gave em away. I'm just a nice girl, I guess :p

I don't recall too much trouble with bumming smokes, but I certainly don't miss it. Most of the time it was just bumming between co-workers and friends. Of course, there is always that one friend who only seemed to smoke OPC's.

The thing that would drive me up the wall is when someone offers $5 to buy my last 4 cigarettes. Yea, sure, the money made up for those 4 cigarettes, but it doesn't make up for the inconvenience of being without smokes for the next few hours or the ride to the gas station to get more. This situation would always happen at the hotel I work at when the drunks from a wedding reception were hard up for a smoke and someone would send them to see me. I learned after the first experience to deny even having smokes.

Not an issue anymore, I have my Tornado and I love it!
