Why do people seem anxious for you to quit vaping, too?

The anti smoking campaign has done a great job in the past 15 years of convincing people of the danger and nastiness of smoking cigarettes. They've convinced the masses that "second hand smoke" is purely evil. They've done such a good job that they've managed to convince people that the nicotine has the exact same effect on peoples health as burning tobacco. Now they've taken on the campaign to convince people that vaping is as bad as smoking if not worse and that it's primary purpose is to hook children into smoking cigarettes. Sadly there are a lot of people out there that are more then happy to believe whatever they are told. :(

I dealt with lots of people that initially though my switching from cigarettes to vaping was great until a few months later when I was still vaping they all though I had failed because I hadn't quit vaping yet. :glare: Honestly it was a bit frustrating at the time, but I got over that ;)

The vapor they see isn't smoke, its not harming anyone. Neither am I harming myself by continuing to vape. I have medical records that show the improvements to my health since I started vaping over 3 years ago if they cared to ask or look into my vaping further. Actually, if they cared to ask they'd find out that I only use nicotine in my juice occasionally BUT few of them are even aware of that because they have never bothered to have a reasonable conversation about vaping with me after my first few months so they remain ignorant of that fact.

Will I ever stop vaping ? I don't know. Maybe yes, maybe no. But if I do stop it will be because I choose to. Not because someone else without factual information thinks I should. :)

IMO, post #20 on this thread nailed it. It's the judgment factor. I think people get genuinely concerned if any habit crosses into area of addiction, but then don't know a way to address that other than, 'you should quit.' But seeing that 90% (likely more) of all persons walking this earth are addicted to, or in the habit of doing, something, it seems disingenuous when all someone cares to discuss is quitting, while not really wanting to examine their own baggage.

To me, vaping is enjoyable, cool, and rather harmless. As one who still chooses to smoke, I know it helps tremendously in allowing me to be a moderate smoker. Growing up, and even today, I didn't think 'moderate smokers' exist. Now I know it is possible. Kinda turns a whole lot of anti-smoking judgments on their ear, and allows one to doubt a whole bunch of anti-smoking propaganda. And yet the judgments are still pervasive, even here in vaping land.

Anyway, I like the many messages on this thread, but wonder why on this thread vaping is fun and cool, but if newbie comes in who never smoked but wants to try vaping, we suddenly change our tune. Then vaping is an addiction that isn't so cool, nor all that fun. Well maybe if 'they' would just vape 0 nic, then its okay. Really? Then why isn't that the active goal for those espousing such judgments?

I think if it as a whole separate realm to smoking a cigarette.

I have dropped nic drop cartos to rda's but this is a hobby/preference for me now.

Do what you feel Is right and don't be concerned what other people think.

Unless it's for your health and the step you made from cigarettes to e cigs is a good one at that

When people congratulate me on quitting then asking when I will quit vaping I usually just say.. one step at a time. I will cut down on my nicotine when I'm ready. Nearly 2 months now and I'm just now taking the steps to reduce my nicotine level in the evenings but during the day I stay at the higher levels. I'm not in a rush any more. Having too much fun trying different things and flavors. My kids are happy I am not smoking any more and really to me, that is all that matters.

Iv had the same problem as you with everyone telling and asking me when im going to stop vaping as well. Never really got alot of support for my switch from smoking to vaping from anyone close to me and it almost seemed like i got more negativity for it hahah. After finding this community i was extremely excited to see that there were so many out there that shared the same concerns and interests as me and have found more support than i could have ever needed here. Thank you ecf and all of you out there posting. This site helps alot of people with a variety of different needs

Quite frankly I think people who come after us to quit vaping are just into social control-freaking, given rise to by the social engineering that has become so very popular in the last 20 years. This originated with the Frankfurt School and Critical Theory, which lead to Political Correctness as a social force focused on shaming each other into adopting the politically preferred social behavior.

It has progressed to the point where it need only be the politics of a single person to bring the shaming down upon you.

Anything anyone doesn't like in another becomes a target now, and people go after each other with gusto, and it really doesn't take much at all. It's a huge socially devisive force. How sad we have come to this... what ever happened to live and let live?

I don't expect the whole world to understand vaping- just the people who are in my immediate life who've I've shared all this with. BUT there is only so much teaching one can do. I *thought* I'd done a good job yet someone will still equate vaping to smoking since that's what they believe is coming out of your mouth/nostrils- smoke.

I guess that "I'll punch you in the face look" finally got them to stop asking when I was going to quit smoking b/c my answer is always- I DID! Now when they see me vaping which is always they have either finally gotten the message or just gave up on asking- either way works for me.

Almost everyone I know who knows that I've been doing this instead of analogs for a week has said the same thing: "Congratulations! That's awesome! Because now you can back down on the nicotine until you're not doing that any more, either, right?"

I've finally just taken to saying, "I'm not concerned with quitting nicotine." Because I'm not. And it seems many on this forum have vaped for years and are happy doing it. But people seem disappointed that I am not driving to "really quit" in THEIR eyes.

If I had to tell myself that I needed to cut down and quit THIS too, I'd be very discouraged. Quitting smoking is a VERY BIG DEAL for me, and I'm fine with it. No, more than fine - I'm ecstatic!

Do other people have the same experience with comments from others?

yep it happend to me too.
"You're crazy sucking on that metal tube."
"It's really unhealthy, they said so on TV."
"They are even worse than traditional cigs."

Most of them were smoking analogs when they were/are saying this kind of stuff.

well, i personally say the same thing i did when i was smoking - i'm not planning on quitting because i like doing it. i usually throw in something about how vaping is healthier and that i feel a lot better now.

also, my favorite excuse (which is, by the way, 100% true) is that i like it because it gives me a reason to take a break every once in a while. if you take a 5-10 minute break every hour or two (which is recommended for your health anyways) and stand around doing nothing, people think you're lazy. if you have a cigarette, though, electronic or not, you basically have a free pass to do nothing for a few minutes without anyone thinking anything of it.
