A World Traveler
Simplicity
Reliability
Predictability
Easy Maintenance
Rough and Tumble take abuse, especially as an at work mod
They last, just simple maintenance, and replacement parts, a mech will last forever, especially if you can do the machining of replacement parts yourself.

To add, there is a sweet spot in every battery cycle that I can't find in a regulated mod. When you hit that spot using a mechanical nothing compares.

I have a couple stashed away for the simple reason that they will last longer than any regulated mod I have.

I'm not even a big dripper though, so it will be a while, if ever, before I begin a search for one.
You don't have to drip to use a mech. You just don't want to use "stock coils" and be able to build your own (which I know you now do) on a RTA, RBA or RDA.

I think because I like to chain vape, I just assumed it wouldn't be wise for me to have one. But then I think of all those cheap ego batteries that I went through and nothing happened that was bad. I guess I'm nervous about battery safety.
It is very good you are nervous about battery safety. Everybody should be, and mekkies most of all. But chain vaping is not a bar to mechanical use. One can put a fresh battery in a mech as easily as one can a regulated. True, mechs don't have electronic overheat protection, but they do have organic overheat protection. When it gets too hot to hold comfortably, put it down. Or better still, switch to your other mod. I like to switch flavors, usually every few puffs. Right now I have 7 mods rigged out and vapable within reach of my keyboard. All of them are mechs: a MMV Poldiac with a Merlin; a VLS Ragnarok with a Doge; an Atmizoo Dingo with a Plume Veil; a FakirsMods FX22 with its true-hyrid Troy II, a MMV Nanos with a Sapor, a Kato Hammer with a Royal Hunter and a Wutang House of Mods USA Ultra with an Indestructible. Now, you don't have to go as overboard as I have-- what can I say, I've got Stage 4 Shinyitus and I love mechs-- but you can get one or two of them with either tanks or drippers, whatever you like better, and the overheat problem from chain vaping reduces the more you have.

I don't remember if you are a coil builder, my friend, but if you want to mech, you pretty much have to be. There are exceptions-- House of Hybrids makes a true-hybrid version of their Kabuki tank for their tube mechs, for example-- but you really shouldn't use most prefab coil tanks on a mech. You can't adjust the wattage without changing the coils, and sometimes even subtle changed make a big difference. Check out this post-- actually the whole thread-- where I and others are talking to a Navy man out in the Sea of Japan about mechs. The post I link talks a lot about how to coil for a mech, and why.

If you are interested, ping me and we'll get started. It need not be hideously expensive-- I really do recommend a clone for your first one to see if you like it-- and I personally think it's a lot of fun. It adds a whole new dimension to vaping.

I do build my own coils. I really want to say thank you for taking the time to write this, I'm going to read the post you linked right now :)

I always liken it to; Why do some guitar players prefer tube amps'? Or why do some car enthusiasts prefer manual transmissions?
I dunno. For me, there's just something pure about it, as opposed to being artificially created. But, to each their own.

Question... if I want a lesson on mechs where would I look?
I like to build in the range of 1.2-1.5, but I also like to chain vape.
Is there a thread somewhere on here?

Short Answer: More wick, more flow potential and power may be applied. More vapor, more flavor. Use a t.m.c., more efficiency and overall vaporization rate to make use of that thicker wick.

Lifted from the post Tensioned Micro Coils. The next step. | Post 1280 for more info.

30 seconds to a ridiculously wonderful vape…and it's all right there on that thread.

Lot's of ways to make a coil but only one where the mechanics of nature (strain) perfects it. Once you have the ability to duplicate one with precision everything and all else makes sense.

Baffled to this day given so many who've mastered this why we're still writing with block letters on this forum when we could have digital precision. To me a strict diet of watts and multi-wire while great fun is like overdosing on MacDonald's. Use strain to target resistance and your wind becomes the reliable tool to i.d. the productive center for any device or combination.

Happy to help if I can sparks.

Good luck.

:)

p.s. Best of all, it's easy…

My first mech is almost half a decade old.
It still works flawlessly.
And cost a whopping $10.

Regulated mods arent durable or reliable enough for my lifestyle.

Tru'dat. BTW, I really like the pic of the inline dualie with the center positive you posted above in this thread. That's beautiful work. I've built a few of them but I like a very free DL draw and I have never managed to get the air right on that coil set, with both of them on one side of the post. I build singles for the 350 mods-- love me some 350 mod, and I vape low enough watts so 350 batteries are viable-- and put up with the more restricted draw. Perhaps that would be an opportunity to try again.

I recently bought my first CV squonker, intending it for a work mod. I love the silly thing. Haven't found the right atty yet-- it's wearing a Velocity with a BF pin right now-- but I haven't given up yet.

The Goon works really good on a CV, I have an aluminium CV :)

I'm going to keep reading on different thread and see what other questions I can think of. I'm a tootle puffer so I know what I like and I build between 1.2-1.5 and vape on my provari around 3.2-3.5 v and my Pico at 7-8 watts. I also use 28g kanthal wire.

Sound plan. When you get ready to pull the trigger, let us know and we'll give you a steer.
