Wick materials. Safe vs dangerous.

I need an opinion on this... for the first ml or two, I get a funky taste from gauze roll. Think its just my finger sweat from rolling the gauze. So, I lit the wick (while on the atty, wicking from the tank) on fire. It burns just like mesh with juice would; and it also burns out little strands, but overall, when I put the flame out, the wick is as good as new. Is the method actually burning the dirt, or am I just wasting my juice?
I just cannot figure this out as my taste buds often play tricks on me.

Well yeah, its good as new. Think of it as wick in the candle, but actually saturated from within with juice to burn. I should mention I'm using "U" wick in a gen-style atty, so juice is coming from both ends. In other words, there's no "end" of the wick that would get dry and burn out.
As for the funky taste, it still lingers on for a while; I'm just wondering if doing this makes any sense. If cotton isn't burning, why would the dirt burn?

The funky taste I get with bamboo, and it never seems to go away, but to be honest I never pushed it to try and break it in, i got annoyed real fast (.5 ml)

With cotton and gauze I only get a touch of that taste in the beginning and then it goes away real quick. Probably in line with your experience, or a bit faster (.5 ml instead of 1-2)

I had one gauze wick that I could not use...my first attempt on my V3...the taste was quite "off", then I smelled my hands and fingers, I chopped an onion, a 1lb of fresh mushrooms and minced a little garlic just before I twisted the wick, even though I washed my hands the cotton picked it up...just a note, if someone ever creates Risotto flavoured juice, I don't see it being a big seller...but otherwise, I agree with Cyrus, cotton has a slight "earthy" taste for the first 10 good vapes or so then it goes away...

Hi all. Just wanted to thank you all for this awesome thread. A few questions. Has anyone used cotton gauze in a gtank? I have both the original and US and and LV. Just curious if the juice on top Genisis styles work with this also.

Secondly, I can't find gauze anywhere. I see the gauze pads but they also contain Rayon and Polyester so far. Can you all provide a pic or two of the gauze your using. It appears much looser and not sewn together correct?

Lastly, can I try a cotton ball instead? Is it the most similar to gauze (vs string, thread, rope, etc.)?

I've used a cotton ball from my wife's make-up "closet", make sure though...it came out of a bag marked "sterile 100% cotton balls"

but this is the stuff I use:



If you have any mesh (actually found that 325 worked best) just do a single "skin" wrap to keep the wick all excited

Hahaha, yeah, really put some time into this. Calculated how much resistance I need on each coil, as I wanted less heat to be dissipated on gauze then on mesh, and had to keep in mind not to go too low in total resistance so I can use it on Provari.

Its actually G-Bell from Yenki. New(ish) gen style atty. My piece has an extra hole, but normally they are made for single coil setup.

Yup, those smaller caps work great. I'm on a list for ScubaMini too.

But anyway; my reasoning was that with lower current going on the cotton, I'd get less burning there, but would still create tons of vapor (like it does, its insane). Top of my cotton wick leans on the top of the mesh coil, so it helps balancing the wicking action.
Maybe I nailed first setup on accident (like it usually happens lol), but this is the best vape I tried so far. Rich in everything; flavor, vapor, TH, its all there, but not overpowering. Next setup I'm gonna try to put higher current on cotton to try it that way. But I'm not taking down this one until it drops dead lol

LOL, no doubt!...a set-up that is that good right out of the gate you drive into the ground...I can totally see how a mesh/cotton combo would be the full package...I can't wait to try that...

just playing with ElectroDroid parallel R values...if you make R1 2.5 ohms and R2 3.5 ohms it has a total R of just under 1.5 ohms...I know your R value choice is somewhat limited on the mesh by virtue of wraps on a rigid "stick" but the cotton is much more forgiving as far a R tweak...oh, this could be good...

This may help someone who is having trouble making nice looking coils (every time).

I clamp a 2mm screw in the helping hands and wrap 5 turns around the screw, (as tight as you can) then just un-screw the coil from the screw and thread the #4 medium cotton yarn through the coil.
This gives a perfect 2 ohm coil/wick when using 32 ga. Kanthal in a Vivi Nova.

Iv'e been talking myself out of doing my E-2, dc. Dutch oven with gauze. These single coil gauze wicks are already guzzling more fuel than A Walter snow fighter that gets less than 1 mile a gallon. I'll have to buy my juice by the 5 gallon bucket.LOL
