Quig you had me confused with what you call gauze. That cotton roll should be no different than cotton balls. This pic is what I was trying as gauze.
IMG_1503.jpg

That is what I am using. But instead of rolling from a rectangle I pull the gauze in a way that bunches up the parallel threads then cut that out and twist the wick from the bundle. Basically I am getting rid of the cross threads so there are no loose ones to come out. And I swear that,at least for me,it wicks better like this.

I revisited the cotton yarn I got from Michael's that I previously was not impressed with and it is working great. The diameter is very close to wicks you find in ce2s so it much easier to setup.

I had previously assumed that the best way to determine cotton gauze vs latex/polyester was by stretching it as latex and polyester are pretty elastic. But even some cotton gauze is woven with polyester and or latex for a number of reasons including less stick to the wound. The only thing I can be sure of is that when it's 100% cotton, it usually makes a point of saying so somewhere on the package.

I'm sure there is a way to test for those of us with cupboards full of individually wrapped gauze pads with no box. Polyester melts so maybe there is some sort of flame test...

If anyone is interested, send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope and I'll return about 2 feet of boiled cotton string. I don't have the original package wrapping for the string, but I'm confident it is cotton and nothing else. I've been using it doubled.

PM me for address.

I don't have cotton batton just cotton yarn I got an s load of can I use that. Worked awesome on ody

For what it's worth, I just put butchers string in the Ody, I'm trying to vape through the seasoning all afternoon but I think it's coming out and I've tried yarn too...it's just to me, it's got this taste that batton doesn't have...I know this is totally subjective but batton is the stuff, it's in my Lines, my V3, soon to be in my GTUS, having said that cheese cloth/gauze is a very close second. I do concede to the string theorists out there though regarding ease, snip, wrap, done :D

Something interesting happened yesterday

So I folded the edge of the SS wick over and re rolled. Wrapped the coil more loose, dipped it in PG and lit it. Set up the cheap line. Screwed it into the Riva and fired away. The coils all lit up red as one! No short. I kept hitting it and adding juice to try to get some gunk going.

The I switched to the Provari at 4.5 volts. Two small sections of coil were now no longer lighting up. I moved them round and tried to loosen them. Didn't help. Eventually it lit up like a candle ad I got E8 E2 and E1s

Later on I put a 3ml Phoenix on with the ego adaptor i was using with the cheap line and the Provari was not happy. E8 E2 and E1.

All my gear sans ego adaptor which the cheap line requires is running just fine.

The damn adaptor is causing a short ! Would this explain some or all of the behavior I've seen with the cheap line?

Actually it doesn't even work on the Riva without an adaptor but the Riva it's smart enough to know there's a problem :)

What do you mean by ring out? I read somewhere that screwing adapters on to cartos / batteries first, can't remember which, could cause a short by pushing the pin in

To quote SteelJan "fat side first"

It doesn't matter which side of the adapter you screw in first. Sometimes a battery or carto/ attie will push one end of the adapter up a little bit so on the next battery carto/ attie you screw in might not make contact. It has always been a problem with screw on connectors with a movable center.
For the most part, this would not apply to your problem. Either there is connection or not.

Ring it out just means to check connections with a ohm meter. If 2 different connections/wires are touching somewhere the ohm meter will register or beep as with your multi meter.;)

So, I watched Dan's vid on the cigarette paper SS mesh method and wanted to try it so I swapped both my Lines back to mesh this afternoon...I wanted to do 2 to make sure I didn't just fluke the first one ...Long and short of it is, as good as mesh is, I already wish I hadn't done them both...not only is cotton batton an alternative, it's so good I actually miss it...it's no longer "I'll just run cotton because I don't feel like screwing around with mesh atm", it's become "I'm going to run cotton on this one for this juice because it's simply better".

also, I came up with a new method for cotton batton wicking gennys today (well that's a little presumptive...new to me, how's that?)

find something rigid (drill bit, bic pen ink tube, piece of wire, etc...) that will just go in the wick hole of your device (tightish, so it doesn't flop around)...pretend that's your wick and wrap your coil...then carefully twist your "stick" out leaving the coil in place...roll your batton, wet it with a bit of juice and give it a twist to thin it up then screw it in through the coil, through your wick hole then fill your device with juice and watch it expand into an already perfect wrap...

so where can I get cotton batton so I can be done with this SS mesh BS lol

When your Bourbon induced haze wears off :D drive to any drug store, go to the first-aid aisle and look for this:

100% sterile cotton balls also work as well as those quilted round make-up removal pads girls (and some dudes) use...but the raw cotton batton in the pic I find is the most versatile...you can mold, twist and mutilate it into anything you need...

cyrus, i plan to check wal-mart and such. this looks to me very much like the cotton batting used for quilts. just be careful - i think there's quite a bit of the polyester fiber ones around .....
also, check drugstores and beauty supply shops .....

if worst comes to worst quig will have to supply us! :D
