I re-coiled a ViVi Nova yesterday with Kanthal and gauze. (to easy). It worked great. with the stock coil I was somewhere between no flavor or burnt taste. No fancy time consuming braiding though, I just folded it to about as long as I wanted and rolled it tightly till it was the diam. I wanted. 5 wraps of 32 ga. Kanthal and I ended up with a 2.1 ohm coil. I do want to try the yarn as it is already the shape I want.

OK, thanks to Cyrus pointing me to this thread I'm now also experimenting a bit... :)

A tissue paper wicks seems to work good. I cant yet comment on longevity - it's only been 20 minutes or so.

I wrapped a piece of tissue paper (obviously unscented) into a thin roll as you would with the line genesis, made an in-situ nichrome coil around a piece of round wood (otherwise known as a toothpick), turned the toothpick out and inserted the paper wick (also by turning it into the coil through my ceramic cup). Early observations: Do not coil the paper too tight otherwise it doesn't wick nicely. Do not use thick paper - same reason. A fairly "thin" VG/PG mix works good. With thicker VG blends some adjustament or thinner tissue paper may be required.

Amazingly the paper does not burn or char much - as long as it stays properly wetted.

I'm using it on my pin setup - just replaced the stainless wick.

Nice video Grym, what gauge needle are you using? Black= 22G .8mm OD for you too? :)

As for what to put this coil in, sockets made from larger needles comes to mind.

I use a spring grips, made of a pin, spring from a lighter, and a piece of cable tip.
Here are some pictures of my grips, let's call them GrymGrips

But what's the point of this, to insulate the cotton from
The heat? I guess time will tell but I'd be worried about wasting a ton of heat to the SS

No 'gunk' build-up on the nichrome/kanthal. Just on the SS needle, should be very easy to clean with no disturbing of the actual coils. Looks like it makes for a very durable coil.

I believe there has been talk (maybe an actual atty available :?: ) of embedding a nichrome/kanthal coil in a 'block' of ceramic. This looks much simpler and most likely just as, if not more, effective.

It seems you could harness the stiff springiness of the SS coil too, like in the video when you put it back on the drill bit to adjust the width. Oh yes, what gauge wire are you using too please? Keep naming things I have here in the house and I just might give this an honest try. :D

and how you deal with "Of the needle" the Injection part?

after that what wick you use with?

To cut them or take the sharp end off, I use diamond needle files (flat or half round). To take the Luer lock off, stick it in a vise and use a pocket knife blade along the SS part slicing the plastic and adhesive two or three times and wiggle the needle out and shave off the remaining glue.

Cotton gauze sounds like a good candidate, from what I've read here. :)

Yes, it's inernational color encoding for needle size

Any ceramics has worse termal conductance, than metal, I think it wold be much less effective when used in a heating unit.

I'm not that sold on oxidizing SS, I'm not saying kanthal's better but SS does have tiny amounts of chromium oxide, that and once you oxidize it, it can rust (because its no longer stainless), and for who doesnt have a blow torch but just a stove, making new syringe coils can be a chore.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, don't know much about this stuff now that I think about it.
