Yea what asdaq said. I don't like the taste of the SS wick. I'm just using the gauze.
And the kanthal is left over from the Genisis days. So that is kinda like nascar, "run what you brung"

I know this thread is about SS alternatives, but has anyone tried the gauze strands in the center of a SS mesh wick? I still like SS mesh, but have been looking for a way to make it wick better, some people say to put silica rope in the wick, but I was going to try a few strands of cotton gauze. I'm sure only maybe 3 or 4 strands would fit in the wick, so I was thinking of taking 2-3 strands and putting it on a sewing needle and thread it into the wick, so it would basically be 4-6 strands inside (folded in half)
I will probably get some gauze tomorrow to try out but wanted to hear if anyone has tried it.
edit: oh if anyone has had success with just the cotton gauze in a Genesis Line, I'd love to hear about that, too

Have you tried the gauze? Maybe I'll try to find some bamboo yarn, I just figured cotton gauze would be easier to find and set up (boiling yarn and whatnot)
I just checked my grocery store for cotton gauze and they didn't even carry it... all polyester type materials... I'll have to check a drug store or walmart

Rebuilt my Stardust/Vision in a syringe (broken tank...already) along with changing to a cotton wick and it's working just fine.

I am trying the Mercerized cotton #3 wick in my Ody, its really impressive, it is easily out performing the silicone wick.

I know it may be a stupid question -- but just wanted to be sure I can use this cotton material to replace a wick in my Joyetech ego-c. I made some stainless steel ones and I'm not 100% happy with them.

I made a coil with some cotton yarn yesterday, I think I like the gauze better. All though the yarn was easier, just snip off to the length and coil it.
how was your gauze set up? braids? thick, thin?

No braid, I just rolled it up till it would just fit into the slots on the ViVi Nova.
I just thought it taste a bit better. Here is a look at the gauze wick after a week of 5ml/day and no cleaning, just added juice when the tank got down to about 3/4 empty. This wic has been washed before the pic with just some running water.

I posted this as a link to the site because it is a rather high rez pic and would take a long time to load (specially for those on portable devices). You can see that the kanthal has oxidized a lot. it had began to turn my normally clear juice (100%pg) a dark brown and taste yucky. I do want to try some nichrome wire to see if it slows this down a bit.

Very informative pic, is that fairly dry then? It looks like there are still tan colored fibers in the coil area, hard to tell if any fibers burnt or it's just gunk. Please turn that up 200x

- Gummy, really - that picture does not do your camera justice.
It is a cheap wallyword camera, what can I say.
And even with a 10" magnifying glass I can't tell if it is burnt or just gunk either. (more than likely it is a bit of both)
