I roll my gauze just like you would the mesh. I tried looping the cotton and bamboo thread at different thicknesses. Meh. Not for me.

I tried a little experiment this morning with the E-2's. I rebuilt one regular with gauze at 2.2ohm's and another E-2 that I had ground off the cup/slots for a hard flat surface. Made that one the same, Gauze wick at 2.2ohm's.
Results, reg E-2= good as ever.

Flat top E-2=snap, crackle, pop, not much vapor. Just all around bad except for the cough/cough throat hit.
I tried lowering the battery voltage and it barely worked at all. I'm really at a loss why this happened.

The short of it is, that everyone has to find what works for them. Just keep at it until you do.;)

I have gauze pads that are 2x2. when I open it up it becomes 2x6 x2ply except for the ends which are four ply.

Ive used both the 2ply and 4 ply ends to roll wicks. If I had to give a guestimate measurement for the wick @2ply I would say, 3/4" by whatever your length for the E-2. For me it should fit snug in the slots.

from my little experience with the gauze so far is that you cant make it to thick/fat only to thin.:)

Well I have to say, I've lost track on how many ml I've vaped through it but I'm finally contemplating putting a new wick in my Ody tomorrow (if only cause I enjoy rebuilding it)...the cotton gauze has kicked the crap out of my beloved ceramic in taste and lasts about 3x as long...I'd say gauze is a win and don't see going back to the ceramic.

I stuck cheese cloth in my V3 and lent it to a buddy...don't see myself getting it back any time soon...I give cheese cloth a win

Not real sold on any of the cords/strings/yarns but that may be cause I just haven't found the right one (to be honest, I kinda gave up looking, I mean with the gauze and cheese cloth being such a good universal fit, why bother?)

my wicking arsenal now only contains SS and cotton, nice

I think I figured out my issue with cheesecloth. It seems I was just using too little of it. With the prior too-small wick, the contents of the tank mostly dictated the wicking speed (too fast when the tank was full).

I've just re-wicked (and have fresh nichrome now) and it seems better so far with the beefier wick. This is in a rebuilt Stardust, which I've decided I was just lucky with my prior rebuild of: it's not exactly guaranteed I can get the coil connected consistently.

Ya, phatt is where it's at. Especially on a E-2 for a nice even vape. I noticed the thinner you make the wick the harsher the vape is. You get more airflow for a quicker vape and more TH. Which may be good for some.
If I roll a wick and it's to thin i lay another wick on top of it until the performance drops off and then I remove it.;)

Tib, when I put cotton in my SGV3 I wrapped the legs in a skin of 325 if only just to get the cotton (gauze and cheese cloth) in the holes, and to also stop the gauze from basically flaying apart in the tank.

So up until yesterday I had no idea this was the new thing. I have been reading all night, almost. Doesn't wrapping in the 325 defeat the purpose of using gauze? I get that it would be impossible to feed it into the tank w/o it. I have a SGV3 on the way and I have 2 other rebuildables here now. I'm just trying to figure out how to apply this new fandangled wick process to the rebuilds. Same as Tib I guess.

Just the legs that drop down into the tank are wrapped (with just enough SS sticking up into the vape chamber in case you have to grab it with a pair of needle nose)...the gauze (or cheese cloth) is bare where the coil is wrapped.
