Ok, I'm super new to the rba, just got my first. Its the S&S Defcon, from what I understand similar to The Line. Got it all wired up with the included ss mesh. it fires up fine, produced pretty good vapor, reads 2.4 ohms on my provari, but it tastes kinda metallic. trying to go the cotton route, I found at my local walgreens a roll of 100% cotton, like a giant cotton ball flattened out and rolled up. I also got a roll of 100% cotton gauze. now try as I might i simply cannot roll either tight enough to fit into the hole where the ss mesh usually fits. more accurately, I can start to feed it in, perhaps maybe 2mm, but it always bunches up at the top of the hole and wont make it down any further. I was thinking maybe trying to roll it around a flattened paper clip and seeing if I can get it into the hole while still on said paper clip, then wrapping the coil around cotton/clip, then removing the clip while trying to leave the cotton in place. any thoughts?

EUREKA! used the above technique and man o man. I know I'm jinxing myself cause I'll never be able to reproduce this first time success, but I'm sure gonna enjoy it while it lasts. A HUGE Thanks again to everyone in this group for all of the advice. So far this cotton roll is tasting just brilliant, way better than anything I could get with the mesh.

ok, only two issues with my set up. first, its a juice HOG. I killed a full 2.5ml tank last night in under 2 hours. Second, there's no easy way to refill this bad boy. With the ss mesh I was told you simply insert the needle through the straw hole, but theres no such hole in the cotton wick. In my attempt to wedge the needle between the wick and sidewall of the wick hole I totally mashed the wick and coil and now I'm back to square one.

So to re-fill the Def-con you insert a needle into your wick? isn't there another hole to alleviate negative pressure or does it just rely on a hole through the center "straw wick"?...odd...I think I'd be drilling another 1 mm hole in the base your wick/terminals come out of. Anyway, props Hildi, glad you got it going on and you're happy...another 2 - 3 attempts and it'll be "old hat" to you and you'll nail the sweet spot every time ;)

Yeah, it seems a bit odd to re-fill that way, but it does work if you're using ss wick. for $55 shipped its not bad, and I think a good way to get my feet wet. my ultimate goal is to get comfortable with cotton wick so when the Mark Bugs Chalise comes out next month I'm good to go on my Reos. Then maybe a Z-Atty-Pro if I'm lucky.

Sorry, but since I got a Genesis mod I've never looked back into vaping with Silica/ Fiber glass wicks on a rebuildable. Oxidized SS Mesh is currently the best wicking material there will be for rebuildables!

You have no reason to be sorry. We are all entitled to our opinions. I applaud these guys and girls, for trying to find something better, and not settling for the norm. Who decided this was the norm anyway? Look at what we all accept as the norm when it comes to cartos with polyfill that burns, or all these stupid inventions the Chinese keep putting out that leak juice everywhere. I say experiment on! Without experimenting we would not even have e cigs to begin with. :2c:

Update on the 4th day of using this monster:

I don't know if you can see the coils very well, but gauze part of the setup is somewhat cleaner than the mesh part. Which is expected since lower current is going through gauze coil. Actually, only 2 top wraps of gauze coil have some gunk on them, which is where the heat is concentrated due to the position and proximity of mesh coil.
I honestly never liked dual coils all that much, but with gauze they have that amazing advantage as they are splitting the dissipated heat on more surface (in other words, less burning).
Seems like this setup will last for quite some time (which is great, because it would be a pain to have to replace it often).

Biggest issue is that its killing the battery very fast. I have Provari Mini, using it with this at 4,7V, and 18350 battery doesn't fare all that well with it; it doesn't last enough to suck down that tank really. So I'm using it mostly with 18490.
Juice consumption is NOT that high as you'd think. It fills up my mouth, my throat and my lungs so well, that I actually had to remove the glue from my hands and put my PV down every few puffs. Which is amazing for me.

Anyway, here are some before/after pictures, side by side:

Try wrapping a single layer of mesh around the lower portion of the wick leaving enough bare cotton at the top to wrap the coil on. This should ggive you enough ridgidity to make the wick much easier to insert/remove.

I know, tried it, but didn't really need it. I roll it a bit thinner, then soak it in PG, and twist a bit. Then I use a thin needle to guide it through the hole, and remove the needle. This way it has some "air", so I *think* it wicks a wee bit better. Not sure if it really does, but it works for me really well.

EDIT: whoups, that wasn't directed at me lol

Why would you post this here?

Hey guys, Endweaver is right, please disregard the previous 874 posts...I'm so tired of the "fan boys" dropping in to slam cotton because it lacks the sophistication and practised skill required to set up mesh...I mean, that can only be the reason because the "cotton isn't safe" argument is pretty mute...

No one is trying to convince you (or anyone) to stop using mesh...this thread is for peeps with an open mind looking for alternatives and trying to help open up the genesis RBA world to those who may not have the skills/patients/desire to build on mesh but still want great taste and vape without the risks of silica/fiberglass/ceramic.

That kind of closed statement isn't helpful.

Your talking about the DefCon, right? if not stop reading here... There are 2 tiny holes in the silicone cap, off to either side. The same cap that has the hole for the wick. Those 2 tiny holes are needle holes from which that silicone cap was originally intended for use. The cap is repurposed for use in the DC. So, if you take a sharp needle you can very easily enter the tank thru one of those holes. Just be sure not to push the cap down or you will have a disaster on your hands. I have not tried this, but I have owned and used the original product that those silicone caps come from, and that is the only way to fill the original product, thru those 2 tiny holes. Again, I have not tried this, attempt at your own risk. I would not tell you this if I didn't think it would work. I def would not try it w a blunt tip needle you will for sure push the cap down. Good luck.
