Question that I thought would be appropriate in this thread.

Does anyone know that if someone has a metal allergy such as a allergy to nickel, if the nickel present in the ss wicks could effect a person with that allergy?

I am curious if the nickel present could make its way into your body.

That's actually a good question and I don't know the answer. I'll be surprise if anyone else does for sure.

While I may not know for sure myself, nickel is present in most commercial atomizer's heating coils which uses NiChrome and in the conducting wires which are Nickel wires. I would venture a guess that if you've used commercial atties, you've most likely been exposed to Nickel already. It would be right of you to be worried about nickel in stainless steel and you should be more worried about other things as well (e.g. silica micro-shards lodging in your lungs, copper toxicity, etc). I'm not saying that everything is terrible, rather every vaper including myself should look at their options and pick which they think is less harmful. At least until there are research and studies done which would be more conclusive.

I know this thread is not about SS mesh Wicks, But I just thought ppl with SS mesh icks that still want use their SS on hand and are having issues such as shorting and hot spots could use this trick to finish off thier supply.

Go to gas station.
Buy one pack of 1.0 rolling paper.
Cut off small rectangle, enough to roll around wick 2x and slightly taller than coil.
dampen paper. Spit, pg, vg, whatever.
wrap coil
burn in
and you are done.

No fiddling with coil, no dry hits. The paper does two things. 1, it insulates coil. 2, it turns to ash and when wet adds greater surface area for absorption.

That will be the last thing I say about SS mesh wicks.... Promise.

I am going to continue using what I have on hand and then switch over. That Sh_t isn't cheap.

I have been using cotton yarn from Walmart, 33 ga Kanthal, 2.2 ohm coil since last night in my Vivify Nova. I can go a while and all is good then all of a sudden a couple really dry hits. Any thoughts?

Are your wicks long or short? I use cotton yarn long wicks and 36ga NiChrome I coil 2.8-2.4 ohm and don't have any dry hits.

P.S. as with any wick tank you have to slosh it around now and then

Thanks Ratpack7. I have long wicks, 3.8v on 2.2 ohm coil. For the most part there isn't dry hits, and its very random when it does it. I try to keep the tank 1/2 full. I didn't get dry hits on the stock silica wick until 2 days in or so. The cotton wick is acting similar. I'm using 50/50 mix juice.

It might be your juice I usually use 80pg\20vg but I am moving more toward 50/50 with my DIY

Quigs, Is this wick procedure so you don't have to fiddle getting the cotton wick into the tank?
Very good video again. I'm sure it will help lots.;)

Side note. I was cleaning out my truck this morning and found one of my E-2's. Still half full of joose I wasn't gonna waste it.

I vaped it and went blag :blink:WTH is this? Yup, silica wick. It was terrible tasting. I think the more used you get to vapin cotton the worse the silica taste.:)

That wasn't my original intention but it certainly worked out that way...the rigidity of the ss mesh wicks does make for a pretty easy rebuild when compared to straight cotton, but the process of prep'ing the mesh for kanthal (with no shorting) can be a challenge for some and I get that (I am definitely NOT one of those mesh genesis elitists)...this is just kind of a "best of both worlds" thing and just my particular cat skinning method to achieve it :D

I've just recently bought a rebuildable and I'm still back at around page 80 reading.I found this in another forum and the claim is that since the fibers are larger it's not a health concern. Does the size of the silica fibers influence the danger? Thoughts?

Silica Wick 3 mm - temperature resistance > 1000°C

I do not have the knowledge to evaluate the heath effects of ingesting different sized silica fibers, I am not sure many on this planet could give that answer with certainty, but I do know that silica fibers are very disconcerting on my tounge, they feel funny taking the fun out of vaping and are probably hard on the digestive track.

Cotton only for me.

Completely different way than I'm doing it, but I like it. I'll have to try this on my GTUS..

What and where did you get that gorgeous vaping device?

the question is, does the generated heat of the system + the solvent action of the e liquid liberate any metal from our coils?

we need research

thanks. that was said much more eloquently than the way I said it. Yes, this is what I was trying to find out :)'

I figured based on the title of this thread, that it was the best place to ask this. Maybe I will start a new one to ask.

I know right!...going to be rolling a new SS wick for the GTUS and will leave a hole in the center...normally my GTUS wicks are are solid...

That's my Line mod...home built...I've got an 18650 vers. in production as well...I get they aren't as popular as the tube mods but for me I break tube mods, it's the whole in and out of the truck, hiking around job sites with plans and cell phones...I've also got one for my Ody, my GTUS, V3....they just work for me...

Well the case is amazing. Care to share any hints , trade secrets, etc. on how you formed the plastic parts?:)

I have resorted to RS boxes (durable) that aren't very appealing but can take a drop well. Then there's the fistpack which is like an egg if you drop it.

I like the recessed atty in the case feel also. Makes thing more compact for the pocket.

Oh wow, I didn't mean "that" home made, lol...it's based on this box: 10pcs 18650 battery case 2x parallel connection DIY box | eBay which has been chopped and windowed, but the metal work is home brewed

I got a Penelope Monday. It came with enough stuff to make exactly one coil. So, I decided not to experiment and used the silica wick it came with. You guys have cursed me. I swear I could feel those needle like fibers on my tongue and in my throat. I'm positive that's all in my head.

Now I have everything to make my own and I'm using a wick made of cotton from a roll I got at Rite Aid. This thing vapes like it was made for it. Maybe I just got lucky. This is my first rebuildable and only my second wick and coil but, it works great and wasn't hard at all. :)
