I`v just read this thread form start to finish... and needless to say I`ve got Ekowool and 316 SS rope in 7/7 and 7/19 in both 2.5 and 3mm (hard to find 3/32 or 1/8 here in the UK believe it or not!) on order to try in the AGA-T2 and the RSST
I did notice quite early in the thread some guys were concerned about Galvanised coatings on the SS rope and rightly so! the fumes given off can be carcenogenic and are nasty ( I know via welding galvanised steel and you need a respirator or just don`t bother!)
There may be a get around or even a test. Galvanised steel of any kind absolutely hates caustic soda! It will bubble and fizz and the caustic strips the galvanisation off in no time!
I often use (carefully) a hot solution of caustic to strip the plating off small parts if they have to be welded.
So a quick test would be to add some caustic soda crystals to some hot water and test a small section of the suspect SS rope in it, if it reacts it`s coated! If you leave it overnight it will strip any of the plating and leave the SS untouched. If you want to strip some of your plated SS for vaping use I recommend a thorough washing after, in fact several washes to make sure all traces of soda are removed.
Now the disclaimers!!! :
Always were gloves and goggles!
Never add boiling water to the crystals! It will react violently!
Do not breathe the fumes!
Do this at your own risk.
Caustic soda crystals can be found at most hardware stores and are commonly used for clearing drains, removing limescale etc
