Another thread got me interested in exploring some tech for building coils. Previous experience led me to believe that wire wrap tools used in old school electronics and telecommunications might be an answer. So I found a wire wrap tool on amazon which was inexpensive (compared to other wire wrap tools) and seemed to approximately fit the gauge I like to use on my REO. That is 28 gauge kanthal wrapped on a 1/16th inch (1.5875mm) post.
The tool is the Jonard JIC-22681 Hand Wire Wrap Tool with Red Handle, 5" Length , I did need to modify it by trimming back the plastic collar near the top of the red handle to allow excess wire to extend out. Also note that the picture shows extra wire being used. This was me simply me testing a bit, normally I would start with a 4-5 inch length in order to minimize waste.

And a closer up view of the coil

This was easy for me, and for $15 wasn't that bad of a deal. I am getting better at using my wooden coiling jig though which seems like the best deal so far.
