Another thread got me interested in exploring some tech for building coils. Previous experience led me to believe that wire wrap tools used in old school electronics and telecommunications might be an answer. So I found a wire wrap tool on amazon which was inexpensive (compared to other wire wrap tools) and seemed to approximately fit the gauge I like to use on my REO. That is 28 gauge kanthal wrapped on a 1/16th inch (1.5875mm) post.

The tool is the Jonard JIC-22681 Hand Wire Wrap Tool with Red Handle, 5" Length , I did need to modify it by trimming back the plastic collar near the top of the red handle to allow excess wire to extend out. Also note that the picture shows extra wire being used. This was me simply me testing a bit, normally I would start with a 4-5 inch length in order to minimize waste.

This was easy for me, and for $15 wasn't that bad of a deal. I am getting better at using my wooden coiling jig though which seems like the best deal so far.

I used to have three or four of those when I worked in the CO on Camp Pendleton and had wondered the same thing myself. My calloused fingers and drill bits have had pretty good success so far but that durn Rene 41 can be a pickle. I betcha one of my old wire wrappers would tame that beast in a second.

Now, I just need to figure out which box out of the 4,237 I have in the basement the blasted thing is hiding in!

I should probably try to make a video, until then it's basically this. Substituting a 1/16th inch drill bit for the post and leaving some excess wire in the tool for connecting the other leg of the coil.

Jonard youtube explanation

Wow that tool is awesome for wrapping coils!

as it turns out, i only added it to my cart earlier. by the time i finally checked out, it was already all sold out.

musta been due to an amazing resurgence of electronics and computer hobbyists earlier today :)

Eh? His original link still shows 17 in stock when I go to Amazon....

That is just too cool. Thanks! Grr, Amazon Canada does not have them, but I can be pretty persistent in finding stuff. Fingers crosses. :)
