The American Lung Association is one of the organizations that is pushing state legislators to ban electronic cigarettes. Some of the language in the proposed legislation is drawn directly from ALA literature that demonizes electronic cigarettes.
Today I am writing to the President and CEO of the national office of the ALA.
They need to hear the truth from us. From hundreds of us. If ALA stops their PR campaign aimed at spreading untruth to lawmakers, we will have thousands fewer letters to write in response to proposed bans.
If you would like to write, and can't think of what to say, here is a very simple template that you can copy and paste into a document and edit to fit your situation.

President and CEO
American Lung Association

Dear Mr. Connor:
I smoked for [##] years. On [date] I began using an electronic cigarette. I have been able to substitute inhaling vaporized nicotine for [X% or all] of my tobacco cigarettes. As a result [describe the improvements in your health – if there are other benefits you have noticed describe these as well.]
The American Lung Association needs to stop its misguided campaign to take electronic cigarettes off the market. These products are allowing long-term smokers to switch to an alternative that is improving their breathing and their overall lung health.
Sincerely,
[Your name and address]

"It is very safe relative to cigarettes, and also safe in absolute terms on all measurements we have applied. Using micro-electronics it vaporizes, separately for each puff, very small quantities of nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol, two small well-known molecules with excellent safety profiles, – into a fine aerosol. Each puff contains one third to one half the nicotine in a tobacco cigarette’s puff. The cartridge liquid is tobacco-free and no combustion occurs."
