HELLVAPE HELHEIM RDTA REVIEW by hittman

Hello and thank you for joining me for yet another review for one of the more recent companies I have started doing reviews for which is Hellvape. I have to admit that I’m a little late to the game with Hellvape. My first product from them was the Vertex MTL RTA. Very good flavor and performance from that one. However, I’m here today after being impressed time and again by the tanks from them that I have been fortunate enough to provide reviews for. Today I’ll be doing my best to give a fair and honest review on the new Hellvape Helheim RDTA. This one is not to be confused with the Helheim S which uses cables for wicking. The new Helheim I am covering has no cables but is an RDTA. I have had it for a couple weeks now and using it some every day. The Helheim is 25mm at the base so will fit comfortably on many mods and has a 4.5ml liquid capacity. Let’s take a look at some factory images and I’ll give my thoughts on it.

INITIAL THOUGHTS:

I had high hopes for this rdta after having good experiences with each Hellvape tank that I have reviewed. I wish I had discovered how good their tanks are sooner. Right now I will just say that I was not disappointed.

The packaging for the Helheim is what I have come to expect from Hellvape. Simple but nice and of course a red box. On the front is simply the name of the tank and on the back are features listed, a contents list, and Hellvape’s company information.

upload_2021-12-23_19-10-24.png

The Helheim uses an 810 drip tip and the o ring is in the top cap rather than being on the drip tip. I’ve seen reviews where people tend to prefer this setup but I honestly don’t really know why it makes a difference.

upload_2021-12-23_19-11-8.png

It is kind of funny now but when I received the Helheim, it hadn’t been released yet but the Helheim S had been so I was looking for the wicking cables. After taking the tank apart I discovered that there’s no way it could use cables. I guess it would have been easier to just look at the user manual. The tank can be taken completely apart for cleaning which I did when I received it. I’ve gotten in a habit of always cleaning new tanks in case there’s any machining oil or residue left inside. It doesn’t take much to make the first tank of liquid taste bad. After cleaning the tank, I lubricated the outer o ring that the top cap slides over to make it a little easier to take off and put back on since you have to remove the top cap to fill the tank.

upload_2021-12-23_19-11-41.png

I found the deck rather interesting. It’s a post less deck so you have to cut your coils to length before installing them. There is a hole on each end of the deck to allow airflow intake and a series of two rows of holes below where the coils sit to allow the airflow to come under the deck and up over the coils. The grub screws used take a flat head screwdriver to loosen and tighten and I had no issues with them. The threads were very smooth. The 510 center pin is removable and included with the tank is a long squonk pin so you can use this rdta with a squonk mod. I’ve been meaning to try it with a squonk mod but haven’t yet. I think I’ll like it better that way since I seem to go through liquid pretty quickly on this tank.

upload_2021-12-23_19-12-19.png

upload_2021-12-23_19-12-35.png

As you can see in the picture below, I went with a single coil. I had no doubt that the tank would be good with dual coils but I often prefer single coils and wanted to see how it would perform with just one. I was not disappointed. The Helheim provided one of the most dense and saturated vapes that I have ever had from a single coil tank. I’ve run tank after tank of liquid through it and am very happy with the flavor and vapor production I got from it while running it at 32 watts with one of the included coils. I wasn’t sure which way was best so I cut the tails a little long on the cotton and tucked them into the holes to stick down a little way into the tank. I had zero issues with dry hits. The cotton stayed fully saturated the entire time until the tank was nearly empty.

upload_2021-12-23_19-13-11.png

The bottom portion of the top cap has two metal pins molded into it that align with the two holes in the base where you fill the tank. So when you remove the cap to refill then you have to align the pins with the holes while pushing the cap back on. I did have a little trouble at first putting the cap back on but quickly got used to it.

upload_2021-12-23_19-13-55.png

The top cap has two types of airflow adjustment. The lower is of course a bottom airflow while the upper is a top airflow adjustment. I initially tried it with both open some and then one open while the other was closed. I felt like I got the best flavor with the top airflow closed and the bottom airflow control halfway open with the single coil I was running. However, while keeping the top airflow closed I did seem to get a lot of condensation seeping around the closed holes and had to wipe it on the outside occasionally. However, this could partially be due to me having my coil as high as it was.

upload_2021-12-23_19-14-31.png

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Helheim RDTA has been a real pleasure to test. I don’t have much experience with RDTA tanks besides one other that I have purchased. To have a tank that can use single or dual coils and still produce phenomenal flavor is a definite bonus in my book. There are plenty of dual coil tanks out there that produce good flavor but they tend to not be as good with a single coil configuration. This tank produces some of the most dense and saturated flavor and vapor that I have ever had from a single coil tank.

Besides delivering great flavor, I think it’s great that a squonk pin is included with the tank and at some point I plan on moving it from my Arez 120 to a squonk mod. That way I can just squonk to fill the tank when I need to instead of having to remove the top cap every time and align the pins when reinstalling it.

The two different airflow controls will be a big bonus for those that like big airflow. I was able to get the airflow as tight or loose as I wanted and could even do an RDL with the right coil. I would probably go with a coil with a little higher resistance than what came with the tank for doing RDL because I like RDL in the 22-27 watt range. I had plenty of airflow with the included coil with the bottom airflow half open and the top closed. With both open partially it was more airflow than I needed for a single coil configuration.

The only complaints I have on this tank are the condensation I was getting built up at the top airflow holes when closed and wish it had a larger liquid capacity with as fast as I was emptying the tank. I guess that’s the tradeoff for getting such great saturated flavor. However, as I mentioned, that’s where the squonk pin will come into play.

Overall I think the Hellvape Helheim RDTA is a fantastic tank and would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a tank that is truly a flavor banger. Whether you choose to run it on a standard mod or a squonk mod, this one is a winner for sure.

I’d like to thank Hellvape and Mindy for sending the Hellvape Helheim RDTA for this review and also a big thank you to those that made it to the end of my review. Below is a link to the Hellvape website if you would like to see what they have to offer.

What do cell ratings actually tell us? Part 2: Capacity

So often I see that this is the only rating looked at when deciding which cell to buy. I can understand why because it seems that the larger this number is the less often we have to charge…a good thing. But like so many things involving Li-ion cells, it’s not that simple.

Capacity is a rating that essentially tells us the size of a cell’s “gas tank”. It’s how much charge the cell stores and it is expressed in milliampere-hours (mAh) or ampere-hours (Ah). One thousand mAh is the same as one Ah. The rating tells us theoretically how many milliamps we can draw from the cell and for how long.

For example, a cell with a 3000mAh capacity rating can be discharged at 3000mA for 1 hour. When you multiply 3000mA by 1 hour you get 3000mAh. But that also means if we discharge the cell at 1500mA the cell should run for 2 hours since 1500mA x 2h = 3000mAh.

You can also go the other way. If we discharge the cell at 6000mA (6A) then it will theoretically run for 1/2h since 6000mA x 0.5h = 3000mAh. But there are things that affect how accurate this is when discharging at above 1A or so. I will address that later on in this post.

There are two main capacity ratings for the big manufacturers, Minimum and Nominal (or Typical). Minimum is just what it sounds like, the lowest capacity that any cell for that model number should have.

The Nominal or Typical rating is what most of the cells for that model number will typically test out to if they are not old and were not stored badly. This number is always higher than the Minimum rating. For example, most 3000mAh minimum rated 18650’s from the big manufacturers test out near to 3100mAh.

The cell wrapping/rewrapping companies like Vapcell, Efest, etc., usually only have one capacity rating and they often use the Typical rating on their wraps. For example, a 3000mAh-rated cell from Samsung would be rewrapped with 3100mAh or 3200mAh on the wrap. A 3000mAh-rated cell from one of the China manufacturers would probably be given a 3000mAh rating on the wrap since the cell often only has a Typical rating.

Some wrapping/rewrapping companies are better than others with this and use accurate ratings. Some inflate the capacity rating a bit (rounding up to 3200mAh for 3000mAh minimum-rated 18650’s, for example) to try to get more sales.

There can be a problem with these ratings though…they are all measured using a very slow discharge, typically at or under 1A. The standard is to use a discharge level equal to 1/5th of the capacity rating number. For example, a 3000mAh cell would have its capacity measured using a discharge rate of 3000 / 5 = 600mA. A cell with a 5000mAh capacity rating would have been tested at 5000 / 5 = 1000mA = 1A.

At lower power levels the capacity rating can be used to get a decent estimate of how the run times of two cells might compare. But as the power levels increase the capacity rating becomes less and less useful. Here’s why…

The internal resistance of a cell causes its voltage to drop down, “voltage sag”, when it’s used. Higher capacity cells typically have a higher internal resistance which means their voltage will sag down more.

This is different from the slow voltage drop we see as a cell is discharged down. Voltage sag is instantaneous and temporary, it only happens during the discharge. When the current stops flowing the cell’s voltage bounces back up to its true “resting voltage”, determined by how much charge is left in the cell.

As the power level increases, this voltage sag gets worse and worse. The higher capacity cells will sag more and at lower power levels than most lower capacity, high performance cells. This means that at higher power levels a good 2500mAh-2600mAh cell like the Molicel P26A or Murata VTC5A can actually run for longer than high capacity 3000mAh cells like the Samsung 30Q or Murata VTC6 when above 15A or so.

You can use the true continuous current rating to judge which cells might be fairly close in performance so you can directly compare their capacity. You can compare the capacity of two 25A cells but comparing the capacities of a 5A and 35A cell at anything over 3A-5A or so would be pointless.

If the current ratings of two cells you are comparing are very different then do not compare them at anything much over about 75% of the lower current rated cell. For example, the 35A-rated, 3000mAh Samsung 30T will run for much, MUCH longer than any 3500mAh, 5A rated cell if you are discharging them at much over 3A-5A or so.

But if you are using them at 1A or 2A (flashlight, toy, fan, powerbank, etc.) then there will be very little voltage sag in the 3500mAh cell and you can use all its extra capacity. It will run for longer than the high performance, but lower capacity, 3000mAh cell in the example above. The extra performance of the Samsung 30T is just not used, or needed, in this example.

So while we we can use capacity ratings to get a rough idea of how two cells might compare we need to be careful not to trust those ratings to be helpful at higher power levels. Choose cells based on their current ratings first and only then compare their capacities.

What do cell ratings actually tell us? Part 1: Voltage

The various hobbyist/enthusiast communities constantly debate cell ratings and what they mean when choosing a good cell for our use. But there’s a lot of misinformation out there.

What do the ratings for a cell actually tell us? How can we use them to choose a good cell? This series of posts are my personal opinions on all of these ratings and how to best use them.

The ratings I’ll discuss are Voltage, Capacity, Wh (Energy), Charge Current, Discharge Current, Temperature, and Cycle Life.

Voltage
How can this be something that’s debated? The basic ratings aren’t but when to stop charging and discharging has been the subject of many an argument. First, the basics.

The “standard” Li-Ion cells we use are rated for use at 2.5V to 4.2V. There are a couple rated down to 2.0V and a couple that stop at 2.75V but these are rarely used. If you are unsure of the voltage ratings for your cells check for a datasheet online.

There are also a few “HV” (high voltage) LiPo cells that can be charged to 4.35V. But be careful, some LiPo HV cells might just be 4.2V-rated cells that the seller or LiPo pack assembler decided to call HV cells to increase profits. Charging these mis-labeled 4.2V cells at 4.35V will damage them and can eventually make them dangerous to use.

Standard Li-Ion cells can be brought down to 2.5V every time you use them without extra damage. This is their rating and how long the manufacturer says they will last, their “cycle life”, is based on bringing them this low.

LiPo” cells are another type of Li-Ion cell but are typically not used at below 3.0V and often not below αround 3.5V. Good LiPo’s are very high performance cells but they are delicate, both electrically and physically.

LiFePO4 (or LFP) cells are another type of Li-Ion cell but with lower voltage ratings due to their different “chemistry”. They are extremely durable with a longer cycle life and use a safer chemistry that standard Li-Ion or LiPo cells. It can vary a little but LiFePO4 cells are typically rated from 2.0V to 3.6V. Never charge one to 4.2V! It might not burst but it will be damaged.

There are other Li-Ion chemistries with different voltage ranges but they are rarely used by the various hobbyist/enthusiast communities.

So what gets debated? What voltage to charge and discharge to.

What voltage you charge to affects the overall life of the cell, its “cycle life”. This is how many times you can cycle the cell from 4.2V to 2.5V and back to 4.2V again. If you only removed 1/2 of the capacity and then recharged that would count as 1/2 of a cycle.

Do not make the same mistake so many others do! For a full cycle the discharge/recharge must be equal to the capacity of the pack. You cannot say that five uses down to 3.6V and back up to 4.2V are five cycles. That would be the equivalent of only about 2.5 cycles.

The lower the charging voltage is the longer the cell’s overall life (if not otherwise abused). A cell charged to 4.1V each time will run for more cycles than a cell charged to 4.2V every time. A cell charged to 4.0V will last even longer (overall) than one charged to 4.1V, and so on.

But charging to a lower voltage means there is less charge in the cell so it won’t run for as long. You might lose about 10% capacity charging to 4.1V instead of 4.2V but that can extend the overall life of the cell a lot. Charging to only 4.0V can significantly extend the life of a cell.

Some of the debates are about whether the loss of capacity (run time) is worth the gain in cycle life when charging to lower voltages. It’s not really worth debating IMO since it’s just a personal decision. If cycle life is the priority you might want to consider charging to a lower voltage. If run time is the priority then you will want to charge to 4.2V at a slow rate to make sure you cram in as much charge as possible. Do not charge any Li-Ion cell above 4.20V though unless you are absolutely sure it’s a true high-voltage 4.35V cell.

There are a LOT of debates on how far down you should discharge a cell. Some would argue that you should never go below 3.6V. Others say you can go down to 2.5V with standard Li-Ion cells and 3.0V with LiPo’s every time.

As always with Li-Ion cells, what to do depends on your priorities. There is no one “correct” voltage. Is the longest overall (cycle) life important or is maximum run time? Perhaps you just want a good balance between those two?

In my opinion you can increase the overall life of standard Li-Ion cells by staying at or above 3.0V or so. The exact voltage doesn’t really matter. Staying above the point where the cell’s voltage really starts to dive down during a discharge (around 2.8V-3.2V) is what’s important. This is where the cell’s internal resistance goes up and the cell gets hotter, which ages the cell faster. There’s very little charge left in the cell below this point anyway.

You can stop at 3.6V but the additional increase in cycle life you get probably won’t be worth the loss of up to 1/2 of your capacity (run time). Your choice though. You can certainly stop here if you have an application where max cycle life is critical. Electrical vehicles (EV’s) do this since their battery packs are so expensive.

For LiPo’s I recommend always staying above 3.0V as they are easily damaged from overdischarging. I haven’t seen enough good data to say how much better it is to stay above the 3.6V point many LiPo users say to stop at. It certainly won’t hurt your LiPo’s to do this and it will help to extend their life. I just don’t know if it’s worth the huge loss of run time.

For LiFePO4 cells I recommend staying above 2.5V for high power use and up to 3.0V for low power use. Below these voltages there’s just not a lot of capacity left.

Voltage ratings, and the others I’ll discuss in upcoming posts, may not seem exciting but these ratings determine how our cells will perform. A little time spent learning about them can go a long way towards getting the most out of our cells.
