Quite a while ago I learned about a range of carcinogenic substances, including silica which is common in man-made sand. I was recently at a beach and my tank managed to get quite a bit of sand in, however I did not realise until after a couple of days. So I've essentially been inhaling silica dust which can result in respiratory issues and lung cancer. I may be worrying over practically nothing but I felt it important to warn fellow beachgoers who tend to vape. If anybody is more clued up on this then myself, please input.

Thanks!

I suspect you didn't inhale any. Doubt that the temps are high enough in your tank to vaporize sand.
I really hope that is the case, but I still felt it important to share
What beach were you at that had man made sand? :D
Haha, what I mean is 'beach nourishment' where sand is transported from elsewhere to create, protect and/or increase the size of an already existing beach. As far as I am aware a lot of this sand is not naturally created through the sea eroding rock overtime, but man forcefully creating it. I may be wrong, I'm happy to stand corrected :)

You need to inhale a lot of sand dust for a lot of days (months, years?) to get ill. Small amounts does not matter. Even children, when playing with dry sand, are not at any danger.
It was more the fact that the sand was heated and inhaled directly that I found concerning. But even so you are likely correct that it must be inhaled for extended periods of time.

The only danger(s) with sand is if you leave your toddler with your ex husband for even a second. I returned to find the boy eating it, and given he was 2.5 years old my trying to make the connection with the child that eating sand led to pooping sadness, that was *next to impossible.* That said, inhaling it probably isn't good, but I highly doubt anything here except the placebo effect, and worries about inhalations.... I'm sure you'll be just fine. :)

I don't know where the beach was that you visited. In any event, here in Florida...beach sand is pumped/dredged up from way out in the water and brought up to the beaches through large pipes. It is NOT man-made sand that's used to renourish our beaches. It's all natural sand...complete with whatever sealife poop particles, tiny critter parts, etc. that might be in it that fit through the filters in the piping. :)

Hey...there's a lot more of those 2 things (and bigger pieces of both of them) that wash up naturally on any beach because of the tide changes and waves, than brought up by beach renourishment. And let's not forget the "goodies" that seagulls and pelicans, among others, leave for us on the beaches, too. Don't even get me started on the seal, seal lion, elephant seal, etc. "goodies" that are left on west coast USA beaches!

I'm missing Sydney's beaches at the moment.... They weren't doing all that and all you had to worry about were jellyfish that could sting you BADLY and the occasional shark.

One time, a small white shark washed up on shore, or someone caught it and abandoned it or something. You'd be surprised what you can find laying on the beach. Poop... Blubber on the decay.... People screaming loudly while another person pees on them... :)

On the plus side, the lifeguards were almost as terrifying as the sharks and would do an epic job rescuing you. Back when socialism still worked there to the point that my parents would let me climb on a bus or train or whatnot in Middle School, to go beaching, as it was entirely safe. Sigh.

I doubt the Gulf of Mexico is going to cut it for me. Nope. At least my kid's smart enough now not to eat sand. I think :)

We see that going on at Mexico Beach in FL. It's pretty amazing that the pumps work so efficiently.

Heck, China just created an island surrounding a harbor that way.

Same here at Fort Morgan. Pure, white sand dredged and pumped from a borrow area about one kilometer offshore.

See, that's 1 of the things that's so great about Florida...the Gulf of Mexico isn't the only option for us! Just drive a few hours at most...and you're at the ocean, or the Straits of Florida near the FL Keys. Beaches can vary greatly from 1 coast of FL to the other, and even along the same coast. IMO...1 of the prettiest stretches of beach in the whole state is in Destin, FL...which is on the GofM. It's a gorgeous beach of soft, pure white sand.

I lived on Maderia Beach and then on Treasure Island (on the west coast of FL) from age 3-age 8. I used to watch for hours as a kid...when they were doing the beach renourishment. Was amazing to see even back then as a kid.

I swore off Florida as a youth. We visited the Everglades *for fun*. I did not find it FUN. I believe you about the beaches, but I'm afraid they are.... off limits for me. No place that people take ALLIGATORS for granted. Nope. Also, I'd be dead of whatever mosquito borne illness they have down there. To not get bit, I'd probably need an anti-microbial/anti-bug fabric with which to make a giant burka. That's just not my thing. But, thank you for living in Florida for me.... I understand someone has to :)
