Just received my Prodigy yesterday, still charging the batteries but haven't assembled the unit yet. However, reading the instructions, it says that the atomizer is expected to last only 3-4 weeks. Why is that? Is there any way to extend the life?

Also, it warns that there is a primer vape-off period. Should I clean my atty first to get rid of the primer?

Do I have to worry about overcharging the batteries, or is this not a concern?

Thanks in advance for your response!

Hey Cheryl,

3-4 weeks is the life span I give to any and all atomizers ... Some last shorter than that, others much much longer. My longest lasted 1 day short of 3 months, and that was run on a home made 5v PassThrough. It was also a 901 atomizer. With that said ... There are some *precautions* you can always look out for ...

1) Overheating ... When the atomizer gets beyond *luke warm* let it rest for 5-10 minutes.

2) Keep the juice pumping ... Start to taste anything different then what the juice is supposed to taste like, refill.

3) Liquid build up ... When liquid builds up, it sits at the bottom of the pot, so while you think it may be full, its really not getting vaporized. You eventually overwork the atomizer, and the solder joints come unattached ... This is why I encourage people to blow out excess juice from their atomizers every single day ... as well as draining here or there for extended periods of time when they are not using it ...

4) I NEVER clean my atomizers ... some truly believe it helps ... I don't.

Lastly ... Its just about trial and error. No doubt, a new esmoker will go through several atomizers from the get go ... Also, increasing voltage can have this effect if you don't take you time ...

Some atomizers come with LOTS of priming fluid, others don't ... I normally suggest starting with 3-4 drops on the atomizer from the get go ... if it has an *odd* taste to it ... Blow all the liquid out and start from scratch ... 4 drops, 2-3 puffs ... then add 2 more drops and you are golden!

Don't worry about overcharging batteries ... I have yet to see any negative impact !

Hope that helps Cheryl! Enjoy and goodluck!

That's interesting, especially since NJoy (my first e-cig) doesn't even routinely offer atomizers as a spare part.

2) Keep the juice pumping ... Start to taste anything different then what the juice is supposed to taste like, refill.
I of course disconnect the battery if I notice any really out-of-control overheating, and since I usually carry several complete e-cigs with me at a time, just switch to a different one temporarily.

I will make a habit of that (although I like to keep my e-cig on my night table for those midnight fixes!), but so far I've noticed that the "blow and drain" method doesn't really seem to help for me. Once an atty's gone, it's gone. If there's any way to resurrect them I'm all ears!

4) I NEVER clean my atomizers ... some truly believe it helps ... I don't.
Aside from blowing and draining, you mean?

Lastly ... Its just about trial and error. No doubt, a new esmoker will go through several atomizers from the get go ...
Nice to know I'm not alone...

Thanks for the tip, although I here I must add my success story. I finally got brave enough to actually assemble this monster and drip some JC chocolate-almond decadence onto the atty. Hope I didn't do too much, because let's face it, it's REALLY hard to see down in there all the way! Took a hit, expecting some of the nasty taste that had me discarding 5 new carts from a unit I bought from Heaven Gifts before I knew what was really happening. But no! I am vaping some of the richest, sweetest vape, with excellent throat hit and everything, that I could have wished for. I feel like I'm having dessert before dinner, and frankly, dinner doesn't even interest me at the moment. I LOVE MY PRODIGY! How soon can I order a couple more? :p Only challenge will be how to carry it in my waist pouch -- may have to create a holster or something for it... :D

Don't worry about overcharging batteries ... I have yet to see any negative impact !
Hooah! Thanks for the prompt reply -- so far I am one mega-satisfied customer! I am ready to put all my other models officially on the bench as backups. The Prodigy simply rocks! :thumb:

I stick tissue down new atomizers to soak up the primer when I blow it out. Then I add three drops of juice and blow it out again. Then it is ready to vape without the primer taste.

Thanks Brian -- will remember that if I ever have the problem again. Where would I be without this forum?

Steve,

Mine was working fine (801), now the resistor in my switch is getting hot and a little blackened and I've got nothing on the atomizer. I'm not sure where the problem is, exactally, I can't visibly see anything wrong - I'll add another 801 adapter to the order I placed for atomizers. If neither works, do you guys have replacement switches floating around if all else fails? I don't know which blew up, confused by the fact it failed after sitting still for about 10 minutes.

My atomizer order was 17555, I just opened ticket #1981546.

Thanks.

Hey Windex,

Sounds like the Positive and Negative Terminals are touching in the adapter :) Shoot Casey an email (which it looks like you just did) and we can shoot you a replacement adapter :) Switch should still work fine. Seen a few resistors blackened/brown/beat up/and they still worked. They can take a wallop so I highly doubt the switch/resistor is blown.

Thanks - I just took apart the adapter and there was a loose bit that shouldn't have been making contact (like it got hit at an odd angle during manufacturer and chipped it), to be sure I ground it down, everything looks ok now but I think the atomizer is the culprit since it's still happening - one way or another I should be able to figure it out. :)

Lesson learned - order spare atomizers. :)

Hey Windex ...

If its blackening the resistor (makes it smell funny and get hott) its NOT the atomizer (atleast not from what I have seen)

Is there black delrin between the positive and negative posts on the underside of the adapter? If you don't see black delrin, and the positive and negative posts are touching, we need to get that replaced.

When this happens, the atomizer doesn't work, and the resistor takes the brunt of the force ...

There is - the inside part of the adapter (the one you had in your other photos for people to knock around to adjust the height of), though, had a chip/flake in the edge that extended past it. I just shaved it down, so it doesn't anymore for sure, but I don't know if it ever did (it doesn't look like it was close enough to make contact). Atomizer still wont work even though there's clearly no contact - resistor still gets hot after just 3-4 seconds. This is what I get for going from a 901 to a 801 - I have no spare parts. :)

When I get replacement pieces I'll test to see what fixes it and let you know?

Nope ... That sealed the deal. Your adapter is to blame. You shouldn't see much delrin if at all. The new adapters come tucked, so there is a good chance there is a slice in it somewhere you don't see.... Your atomizer is likely still good simply not functional.

I should note - this only happens with the atty attached. If I just hold down the button with no atty, no heat.

This is because when there is no atomizer attached, the circuit is incomplete and there is no load. When the atomizer is attached, it completes the circuit thus the resistor takes the short ... :)

P.S. -- Its the adapter ... I am about 99% positive :) Unless you have our first haywired resistor (which I have yet to see) :)
