I love that Zeller's primary point was, the results of their "many" (expensive) studies are really not important. What's important is that the FDA be given legislative oversight first. They just want the right to take control of the ecig industry.

Also, interesting that unless the FDA can get Congress to classify e-cigs as a tobacco product, they're powerless.

Here are my overall thoughts on the hearing. ...and I think it's good news. Senator Harkin seemed to want the witnesses to make proclamations that they were not ready or willing to make. He wanted them to lay into e-cigs and became upset to the point of mumbling and interrupting when they didn't. At the end they brought everything back to a heavy emphasis on combusted tobacco. I think (see hope) the data is starting to come in and it's not turning out the way they pictured in their preconceived notions.

Zeller continues to say how cigarettes now are MORE dangerous than they were 30-40 years ago..
Now seems like a pretty good time for a safer alternative to that. I wish there was something that could do that for us... /sarcasm

Thank you! I was afraid I was going to have to watch it all over again; couldn't remember who said that. "(Was it Zeller) who said despite regulation, cigarettes are actually more dangerous now than 30+ years ago? That's just great - way to go, great job you're doing protecting us. Good grief. Keep your protective regs off my e-cig, please." (my FB post - also made my first tweet to Senator Harkin. I'm neither Democrat nor Republican - I hate politics. On this issue, I'm apparently Republican. :) Gawd, I hate this.

"Hello, my name is Ms.P and I like strawberry, pear, and mint flavored e-cigarettes."

It was Dr. MacAfee from CDC who made that statement about cigarettes being more deadly than 30 years ago. He said the vent holes added to filters may have had something to do with it by making it easier for smoke to travel further into the lungs. If I recall filter venting was added to cigarettes to make reduced tar cigarettes more palatable.

Rats. I guess I'm going to have to re-watch... I could only half-watch while at work, but I was listening.
