Yes sir I have a 2mm hole for my straight wick the other is just whatever the slots are in the ce2 cup i didn't measure prolly just a hair under that... both will be in i think its 1/2" tube whatever a maximizer is I used that base. I just didn't know what design to focus on since i have never tried a straight through wick before. But lots of ce2 in all sizes of tanks. And I think I am only getting a small piece of mesh so I don't want to mess any up :)
here's hoping it comes today >stalks the mailman<

Is it possible to wrap the SS400 too tight? I just finished this mod and everything seemed to work exactly as you described Scuba (Thanks by the way for all your inspirational ideas) The first couple of vapes were great, lots of vapor and the SS tastes great. But if I don't tip 90 degrees to soak the wick where it enters the coil I get that nasty dry burn taste after a few seconds of pull. I didnt measure the rolled SS before I put it in the tank, but just using the eye calibrator I would say its right at 1/16" from the 1/2" x 3" sheet. Should I scrap this one and start over with a looser roll?

Thanks

Yeah I would try a little looser of a roll.

Thanks Dan,

Well, I have switched back to the regular wick that comes with the CE2 XL since I just cant get the SS400 to wick reliably. I have tried a few different configurations with tight rolls, loose rolls, thinning the liquid, nothing seems to help get is consistent. When i get a good solid hit, the flavor is great and I Love it, but if I can be positive that it will hit good every time, its like playing Russian Roulette with a dry hit.

Also, I saw a link some time ago to a Scubabatdan video rolling and bending the SS400, but I cant seem to find it now. Found it. For some reason, the first 2 I made went perfectly, but now I cant bend one without kinks to save my life. Its like I forgot a step or something... I am going to continue to attempt to get this to work on my secondary tank, which will be a SSR mod of this tank using the regular CE2 with a 510 extension. I will post pics if it works out.

That's weird how sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. The wick I have in my map tank now works too good....I have to chain vape it, and after sitting all night I have to blow it out. my only problem is making a new coil. The ones I have are to high resistance, and everything I have tried that I know about tinning the kanthal has failed. 2.8 ohm with 3.7 just doesn't work too good. If I could get the resistance down to 1.5-2 ohm.....I think it would be great! Would be just like my genisis!

Are you using 32AWG Kanthal? should only need three wraps for that ohms...

Another trick to geting it to bend is to wrap it around a paper clip, and make sure it is wrapped tight. Then bend the paper clip a little at a time while continuing to roll it tight on the paper clip until it is bend like a horseshoe, the just slide it off. The bend will stay where you were rolling at the apex.

Awesome Dan, Thanks. I will have to try that tonight when I get home.

By the way, what PG/VG mix are you guys using? I am mixing a 70/30 mix with AG (20% Everclear with Wilson's VG) maybe its the viscosity of my juice that's causing the problem.

I run 80/20 PG/VG with 10% flavoring in most all my mixes.

Yeah, 32...but can't make it work on this.

I'm using the existing wire on the CE2. just desoldering from the post, wrap, the solder back to the post. I can't get the solder to stick to the kanthal to be able to change the resistance. I have used silver bearing solder once before, but I can't get it to work anymore. I tin the kanthal with the silver, then solder it back to the wires. But for some reason that isn't working now. So I have 2 CE2s taken apart that I can't solder back together.

I have not tried ruby fluid flux yet on kanthal, it has an acid in it that helps to solder to nichrome. Will give it a go on kanthal and let you know.

Well the ruby fluid flux did not do jack.
IMG_0462.jpg
I had to do the J-Hook method and encase it to get it to hold.

Well I hope that helps a little,

ok I have a question and i am almost scared to ask since I'm sure somebody will point out that it was posted somewhere already and I missed it but I am having trouble bending the wick without kinking. I don't have a lot of experience doing this but I will try to explain. I made the fold on the outside edge and rolled it around a needle to get a nice straight ~2mm wick so far so good. The one time I got a good one with no kinks I looked at closely and you can see the 'edge' running along the wick like a seam but where the bend occurs there is a 'twist' in the wick so the edge is not straight but twists around like a candy cane then is straight again on the other side of the bend. I would also presume that all the threads in the mesh follow this twist. Is this the normal when its done right or do all the 'threads' in the mesh need to be kept straight for it to work properly? I haven't been able to test this one yet because I cant get the solder to stick to the kanthal I have either. Gotta find some other kind of flux lol
I am also curious about needing to wash it - is a rinse in hot water good enough? pita to boil water each time to play with one...
thankyou for the advice with this

Have you seen Dan's video on rolling the wick? If not that should clear it up for you.

For cleaning, 'raidy' recommends boiling 5 mins three times.

Thanks Turbo, I have watched the video a bunch of times. I cant tell if dan is putting a twist in it or just streching it as he makes the bend. And the video is not clear enough to make out the wires in the mesh. I am looking at the wick and in the bend where the twist is all the wires of the mesh are more tightly scrunched together and I didnt know if this would effect how it works or if that was how its supposed to be. All the ones I have tried to bend without the twisting have kinked - haven't really made one I was super happy with yet. Gonna keep trying - I've heard too many good things to give up now.

Brazing with brass appears to be the reccomended method for joining to kanthal wire. Geez, and I can barely solder!

Well, I don't know if this will work with the ceramic CE2 cup setup....but I have seen in another thread, twisting the kanthal together with an almost zero resistance wire. Where I run into a problem is the tiny little hole the wires run through. Might have to try something different.

When you originally rolled the wick....was there a hole in the center all the way through...about the size of a pin? Did the mesh kink when you bent it in to shape? Those are the same measurements I used, and mine will flood....rather easily.
