The headline is corrected, but in the body of the article...
"The use of e-cigarettes in the United States is increasing rapidly and the flavorings used, many of which contain diacetyl, may be harmful. This case adds to the growing body of research indicating e-cigarettes pose a health risk," said Dr. Graham Atkins, of White River Junction VA Hospital, lead researcher."

Okay now, since the fact that I (and thousands, millions? of others) who quit smoking, feel better and have measurably better health statistics with an ecig am still viewed as merely an anecdote, how come this guy ranks as part of a growing body of research?

Ah, I see. I don't think she meant any harm. She seems like a nice girl. Hopefully she doesn't get harassed by a bunch of ...... off vapers. She's a young mom doing her job. Reminds me of my wife as they are the same age and our kids are same age as well.

I'm sorry, but she's not "doing her job" by concocting alarmist headlines out of thin air. Being "nice" is no excuse.

We have several posters here who think the same thing. And a few 'advocates'.

You're an anecdote, because you're contrary to the narrative that government/big money is trying to sell

it seems to me they have a source and are looking for a diagnosis. or should I say headline.
Right. Do you think the word "diacetyl" would have even been in the article, been on the radar AT ALL if not for the hand-wringing of vapers? It's a self-fulfilling prophesy.

There is no excuse for ignorance, especially if you're a "reporter"... if you don't know something, LOOK IT UP!!!!!!!

Andria

ETA: I just wanted to add to this -- if you're ignorant at this stupendous level... MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE WRITING ABOUT IT!!!!

Check out this list of the most common sources of exposure for Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/299174-clinical#b5

I think they would need to test the actual ecig he used to determine if any of these sources were present in that ecig before they could definitively blame the ecig.

Edit: Geez, I just checked out Wikipedia and the possible sources listed there are so numerous that it would be near impossible to prove it was the ecig.

Aha! They (Graham Atkins, et al.) are doing a study to be released on Oct 27th on ecigs and diacetyl. They're using the "69% of sweet flavored eliquids" deal (which we've seen here) along with further study...

This, with the lie in the headline and the retraction, was just a PR stunt with the help of an idiot reporter. The 'piece' along with the 'popcorn lung' headline has been repeated in several articles within the 'CHEST/lung researchers' community. I'm sure they have people waiting for the release of the forthcoming study.

Ok all you betting people. Ten to one next month this will be the smoking gun they have
been looking (nay praying) for.
Every single vaper that goes to the doctor with the flu will now be documented.
Do you vape? We have to know so we can diagnose you properly.

I currently have the flu, but it's not bothering my lungs at all -- in fact it was hard for me to figure out what's wrong with me, in the absence of the deep, thick cough. When I smoked, it was impossible to miss, due to that horrible cough and all the mucus.
