first look: unboxing.....
side by side size comparison to Apollo Reliant and Provari Radius:
First thoughts......it is light...light light, and very light. Without a doubt the lightest 18650 mod I have ever held. It has a bit of plasticy feel to it, but at the same time, it feels sturdy, with zero rattles or loose parts. Fire button and + and - buttons are firm with nice clicky tactile feedback.
Controls are easy to operate. Fire and - button together will enter the menu, which consists of "work mode settings", "hand mode settings", and exit menu. Navigate menu with plus and minus buttons, select via fire button. Work mode settings is where you change modes, of which it has 5: Voltage, Power (VW), Ni, Ti, and SS. Hand mode settings is simply the screen left or right layout. Fire button and plus button together to adjust wattage in TC modes. Lock resistance with plus and minus buttons together. 5x power button to turn on and off.
first use, I am using the cubis tank with .5 ohm 316SS coil.....output seems good, but a tad under set temp, could be set for a different type of SS, like 304, but it is close enough that it works well, with a significant throttle back when the wick dries out. Output is a tad pulsey if the wattage is set much higher then needed, but setting it at 5 watts over normal needed power for the coil I am using, I didn't get any pulsing (until wick dries).
The "finish" is very sturdy seeming. I have already tried to scratch it with my nails, and was unsuccessful in doing so. Seems like it will stand up to things like keys in the pocket or purse with little to no marks.
The battery release button is in a good place to not accidentally be pressed. It has no lock, but the amount of pressure needed to release the battery is enough that I don't imagine it self releasing (while new, we shall see after some repeated use how well this stands up). The battery goes in positive down, which is marked on the battery tray.
Cons:
The screen window is cut slightly small, so the edges of the display are partially cut off/blocked.
The positive battery terminal contact could be a little more "robust" or springier....batteries that are a fraction shorter will loose contact while installed, so you have to continually return on the mod (switched to a different battery, and this one fits perfect, and hasn't shut off since).....This is a Sample version, so these things might be different on the retail version.

Nice review - thanks. Personally, I think the battery release button is kinda gimmicky (says the girl who has never used one). I like the SS compatibility the look of the mod, but I want to watch for a while and see how long that button holds up. I'm sure the weight and shock resistant qualities will be big draws for some, not so much for me. I dunno - there's just soooo much competition at this price point. Pretty soon, new mods are gonna have to render the user bullet-proof and invisible in order to stand out from the crowd.
an update on the Voidray. I put it into the hands of a complete beginner as a bit of a secondary trial run. This is the guys very first vaping experience. So far, 3 days into it, he has had zero issues, and no problems with figuring out how to operate the device, a good sign in my opinion.

Totally agree. Plus, unlike most mechs, why does the body of a regulated mod still have to be made of conductive material? Doesn't, and can be made so light because it doesn't. Plastics are underused in mod design IMO.
ironically, one of my favorite mods is the sxk nebula in brass.....it is small, but a HEAVY beast...but I like it for the looks

Maybe i'm lucky but i have not had any mod die on me from dropping it repeatedly on concrete or anything else for that matter . I had a mod die on me being submerged underwater though .
I buy mods that have proven chipsets (YiHi) and have proven themselves to hold up over time , they can be had for very cheap money these days so thats why i prefer not to be a guinea pig with these no name mods .
If i had every mod fail if i dropped it like some others claim my mindset might be different .

I'm no beta tester.
I bought an IPV mini, after v2 had been released-
trawled a really long ecf thread on it so I knew about the awful battery cap.
And I love that mod-
would have become a total YIHI fanbois.
Liked DC/DC so much that I thought I was heading towards mechs
& would hate TC.
But, no stepdown in VW on IPV D2, so Evic mini was my first TC mod-
& by the time I got it, software upgrade 3 with TCR was available.
tbh, I think IPV mini has a slight edge in PWM....
Will prolly never really test that- cos I am a total TC convert-
waiting for my second TC mod to arrive-
and that was released about 5-6 months ago.
From what I've seen with mods-
the past does not predict the future, other than with Provari.

Specs are comparable to many mods on the market:

Output mode: TC mode / VW mode
Output Wattage Range: 7W – 60W
Output Voltage Range: 0.5V - 9V
Resistance Range:
0.2ohm - 5ohm for general coil; 0.1ohm -5ohm for Ni200/Ti/SS coil.
If the resistance over 1.3ohm, VoidRay MOD couldn't reach to 60W output.
TEMP Range: 100-300°C/ 200-600°F
But it has a nice look to it. It also appears to have a unique method of battery release, utilizing a button on the mod housing For those who prefer to swap batteries instead of on board charging, if it works well, that could be a boon......and it just looks snazzy

I've never had a mod die on me either. Every mod I've purchased, I'm either still using or I sold it (in good working condition). And I've probably had over 50. I've dropped many, but never had one break. Broken a lot of tanks though.
Welcome to ECF! I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions of the Voidray. I went ahead and ordered one from GB, so who knows when I will actually get it. I'll post my thoughts on it when I eventually get it as well.
I have broken a lot of tanks myself , you got to have the worst luck on the planet to have every mod you own break after dropping it lol. It's very very difficult for me to believe actually but it is what it is i suppose.

I have never used a vtc mini, but I can tell you that the voidray is a bit larger...but way lighter. So it will depend on what your main priority is....size, vtc wins, weight, voidray. they both tc Ti, Ni and SS
