EDIT: THIS mod MAY BYPASS THE FUNCTION OF THE SAFETY SPRING; RENDERING IT USELESS. PLEASE DON'T ASSUME THAT THE SPRING WILL STILL COLLAPSE WHEN IT SHOULD.

So, seems like everybody's modding their REO! (NOT!) But dhomes got me thinkin'; and I came up with a mod that is: incredibly simple, doesn't alter the REO, and (best as I can tell) doesn't impair the function of the safety spring*. I'm not gonna call it a safe mod . . . . .. not sayin', just sayin'.

This is a strip of brass shim. It is one thousandth of an inch thick. I can't rest a AAA battery on it without it collapsing (much less an 18650). Here, lookie.

I loosened the screw on the spring plate (cleaned under it) and slipped the brass shim in. . . . . . DONE!

THE RESULTS:

test #1: 0.3Ω coil, battery @ 4.12V, NO SHIM load 3.1V . . . . WITH SHIM 3.6V (that's a .5V improvement on a .3Ω coil and NETS 0.52V loss under load! . . .. on a 0.3Ω coil!!!!!!)

test #2: (suddenly, I don't need a .3Ω coil. Go figure) 0.5Ω coil, battery @ 4.06V . . . loaded w/ shim 3.68V (that's a 0.38V loss on a 0.5Ω coil!!!)

BTW. I got a nice multimeter and quickly learned that my coils have been about 0.1Ω lower in resistance than I thought. I would not have purposely built a .3 ohm coil for vaping.

* I think the hot spring collapses due to heat. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Nice! Heat would be my guess as well. I have no worries for such things especially considering i prefer the 1 to 1.2 ohm range but interesting none the less. I have been thinking about a new mm as well. Mine is several years old and wasn't really meant for ohm readings that low. So most likely my readings are off a few tenths as well.

wow I love this idea. Where did you get brass that thin?

I love the simplicity and the fact that it does not alter Rob's design or safety. I'm 99% certain it is a thermal triggered spring as well.

edit: If you have spares please try hard shorting it to see. If your willing to try it that is in the name of REO science:D

If the spring will still work then this is ingenious dibby!

I can't claim that it will. But I can't see how it wouldn't.

BTW: This grand is raw tumbled aluminum. On those that are painted, I would gently sand away the paint in just the area where the spring plate contacts the body.

Yeah I will...the fact is its so simple and unobtrusive I do not really see how it is effecting the stock design much at all. It more than anything seems like a bypass while maintaining the initial safety mechanism. I typically don't just jump into things but this appears to simple yet ingenious in that with very little which could go wrong.

Would the brass shim hitting the inside of the body effect anything?....I'm not sure how seeing as its already grounded at the base.

Might the edge of the brass hit and scratch or cut the bottle while squonking? Might touch but doubtful it would do much more beyond that...these were the initial questions I asked while looking at it. At first glance it seems like a solid idea but I'm not expert.

much like the copper vein Reo i got from the classies that had already been sanded to work with a Kick

(just to clarify that "painted" prolly refers to anything other than a raw tumbled)

nice work, dib!

My lip hurts............................ ;)

Kudos to you and homes, big time. I have no reason to mod my precious but that simple shim addition around your spring is damn compelling, to say the least. I'd have to venture a guess the spring shrinkage is due to heat, otherwise it seems to me it would shrink at some of the super high wattage we pull from some of the high drain batteries.

If it is heat that causes the shrinkage I'm wondering if the spring plate it's attached to could be electro plated without compromising its purpose in life.

Between this stroke of genius and homes's silver positive bar... both mods being easily reversible... looks like I'll be following suit as well.
