I'm sorry Wildsky! Sure hope Maggie will be ok!

Don't know if it's been mentioned, and if it would be soon enough for any other treatment, but around here there are certain vets that I call on (phone only) that have a wealth of info about treating wildlife. I was even able to save a turtle who had pnumonia (?) and had been run over by a lawn mower. This vet gave every little detail in care...even to cleaning his eyes out daily with toothpicks! They even helped me save a nest of day-old flying squirrels that had blown out of a tree. Couldn't believe they had IV needles that small! Several other rescues over the years and they always just give me the simple, usually inexpensive treatment options over the phone. Just a thought.

Keep us up on her progress.

Thanks,
Julie

Thank you for all your kind words and tips! I really appreciate it all.

Maggie is living large right now, she had a little bath tonight, I just stood her in a tub of water and washed her underside. My hubby then held her wrapped in a towel while I cleaned out the crate and sprayed a little diluted bleach and wiped it all down.
I got to hold her for a while as well, and she went to sleep on my lap! (she's so cute) I gave her new food and water, and some extra rice, she was picking away at it when I put her back in her crate.. (gawd hope the dog can't read)

I told my hubby she's going to be following us around like a puppy dog soon! LOL

Awww, sounds like happy endings. :) I agree with NicoNut...better move over and make room for Maggie :) :)

My kids are loving having her in the house - my son found an egg this morning, and now the two of them are feeding her through the crate, with the dog waiting for them to drop something.

Her wounds look like they're drying up, I can see one really easily, on her back, the others I have to move feathers out the way. I can't figure out which toe was messed up - they all look ok, perhaps it just had blood on it from another injury, all her toes look fine.

Wow, you all are animal lovers and like chickens????????????? I have 24 pet chickens. And since I've had them I've really been forced to put my big girl panties on and deal with some sad things.
I'm glad that Wildsky's chicken is getting well in the "Hilton" hospital, LOL.

And someone lost alpacas? Oh, how sad. They are so sweet.

Just saw your first post Wildsky about your poor girls. I'm so sorry but I'm glad Maggie is doing better. Maybe you should think about getting a Great Pyrenees. They are great protectors of anyone and anything that lives on your place. I live in the country too and get so mad at the irresponsible people that live our here. They just go into that Born Free mode and let all their animals run loose. We have a fenced yard for our babies and have to deal with the neighbor dogs coming over and harassing us and our dogs. Gets rather irritating. My neighbor just built the ultimate chicken coop. He built it totally enclosed on a trailer base with wheels and stuff. He lets them "fertilize" one area at a time and then moves it lock, stock and barrel. Brilliant idea and his birds are kept safe since it's enclosed on top as well.

I got myself a very good dog, an austrailian cattle dog (from a friend of mine) her mom "guards" chickens and children :D And my Ginja girl does the same. They're not Guard dogs as such, but with some training they do really well.
Ginja knows our chickens are supposed to be here, the only thing she tries to do is sniff their butts and the chickens don't like that at ALL.

Problem is, Ginja is mostly an inside dog (spoiled rotten) our property isn't fully fenced, we really need to get on that. I have the back yard fenced, but the fence is low, and the chickens can get out, and they do! I can't leave Ginja out because she'll follow kids to school and get into trouble! :(
I should have let Ginja out the second I knew there were dogs in our yard, but I didn't want to deal with a dog fight, and I'm afraid Ginja will fight to the DEATH of the other dog if she catches it. She got SO mad when I did take her out with a leash, she was growling like I've never heard before - she was SO angry!
I'd love a great pyranees, but when I was looking for a dog, those were just SO expensive, and I'd have to get two if I left them on guard 24/7 - so they could take breaks and support each other.
I hope to get our back yard totally closed up with higher fencing this year... but money has been tight with medical bills (my son) so we'll have to wait a little longer.

She's beautiful. I can see how you'd be worried about a dog fight. No one wants that! Did you confront the neighbors' about their dogs attacking your girls? You hate to resort to using weapons but in most states you have a right too. I'd be nervous about doing that for fear of reprocussions but if it happens again you might have to consider it. Hopefully things will go better for you and you can finish your fence.

One year I had a abandoned baby duck come wandering into my yard. It was almost if it knew I would help it, came out of the grass and just fell over. I lived in MN so it was quite cold and when I picked it up it was just shivering and just layed in my hand. I closed my hand on top of it ( I called it him) and kept it warm while I thought what to do. So i took a big rubber made container and put a heating pad in it with towels and called a shelter to see what to do. The rescue place was not open until mon. So by mon a had him running around my house with two cats and a dog and he was the boss. I would put him in the tub and he would just swim and almost seemed like play. I love animals and animal lovers dosn't matter what kind of animal they all have personalitys and I really wanted to keep that little guy... So with that I wish your girls the best of luck esp maggie.

I called the owner of the dogs RIGHT away, actually the owner is the sheriff. I wasn't amused, by the time he got here, my hubby had already put the one chicken down, and hubby wasn't happy either.
My hubby told the sheriff, if the dogs come back we'll shoot them. The sheriff's daughter came up to say how sorry she was as well, she was crying and very upset, I let her see Maggie and I tried to actually make her feel better - she didn't even know we HAD chickens. We showed her all our feathered pets.
They apparently have an invisible fence thing, with the collars - apparently those don't work too good.

Anyway, the sheriff knows we'll shoot his dogs, and he didn't say anything about that.

Ginja's main job around here is to follow the kids around, we have lots of tree's, deer, snakes etc.. and my son doesn't pay attention to the small stuff when he's in his "fort" so Ginja goes along, and I KNOW she won't let anything sneak up on them! She's such a smart little cookie, she see's kids and she knows WOoooHoooo we're gonna play! She doesn't even mind strange kids she's never seen before.
But heaven help a MAN if they show up - she'll tear their heads off. She HATES the UPS guy. LOL and any men visitors around here she'll be very unhappy till I tell her its ok. (she won't even listen to my husband when it comes to strange men, it has to be me)

Ducks are SO funny! I got 6 muscovy's and they're so dang entertaining.

This past winter one of my boys got frozen! I saw him sitting under our deck looking VERY unhappy - all his feathers were frozen stiff. I brought him in the house (those muscovy's are BIG boys! ) I gave him a bath, cool water so as not to shock him. He pooped in the bath tub 8-o then pooped on the floor in the bathroom, fluffed and flapped his wings making everything wet! 8-o I waited for him to dry off and then put him back outside, we were well below freezing and I didn't want him to get used to being inside the house. :D
I'm entertained nightly now, they're hunting bugs, and when the sun starts to set, I see them walking in a line around the yard, with their heads real low to the ground hunting things... They're eating em bugs. I don't know if its flies or mosquito's but they're having a blast!

Now that really irritates you when it's the danged sheriff for crying out loud!! He knows better!! I'm glad you were intimidated and still told him you'd shoot his dogs. Those invisible fences do not work in my book. I had a friend in town whose neighbor had one of those. Their dog loved to come over and play at my friends house. He would come over and wait on her porch till she got home. Crossing the "electric line" did not phase him. LOL

Yeah, partly my fault, his dogs have been here before but didn't DO anything and I chased them off... I should have told him then. But it wasn't a surprise to them that the dogs got out either, I guess they didn't think the dogs would do anything.

There is another dog that comes up here - and I haven't seen it  it peed in our garage, and I can tell by the hight of the pee that it wasn't the sheriff's dogs (they're smaller) so now I'm constantly on edge which isn't fun at all. Judging by the pee, this other dog is bigger than Ginja as well, the pee up on the garage door started higher up than her back! She was NOT amused by that either.
(Ginja is fixed so its not her feminine wiles attracting dogs up here)

I meant to say "weren't" intimidated. You really have a problem with those dogs. Man!!! Some people should not be allowed to have animals or children for that matter. Too bad you can't catch them and attach a note to their collar saying they will be shot next time they are found on your property. Just don't say which property is yours and it will hopefully make them wonder who you are and they will keep their damned dogs at home.

And our town is so small, we're probably friends with the owner of the dog that peed in our garage 8-o

There is a rotweiler that roams around, a lady at my hubby's work said the dang thing almost attacked her walking to work the other day! My son walks that same way to school everyday!8-o
Its those kinda people you really wanna strangle. I've seen that Rottie chained up in the front yard of a house a few blocks away.

We're just outside of the town limits, hence all our animals, but I'm just about done with everyone elses..........
