Hello everyone. As someone new to DIY mixing I want to say it seems like a very daunting task. So much to learn and so many warnings. I read until I couldnt see straight, rested and then read some more and to all those helpful people who shared on here, a huge thank you!
Tonight I ordered a bunch of flavor concentrates, and the recomended DIY starter kit. Vanilla has become one of my ADV flavors so I plan on making a simple vanilla juice and then going from there with just simple easy juices.
From what I been spending, the initial cost ($130) of starting my DIY cost less than what I normally spend a month on juices so it will be a huge savings in the long run.

You can get into it for a lot cheaper than what I spent. I got the DIY premium kit yet they have a bare bones kit thats very cheap. DIY Mixing Kits
I also went to wizard labs and bought like 25 flavors plus extra PG & VG & nicotine. I learned a long time ago that if I have to face my wifes wrath I might as well make it worth my while :)

I wish I had the ambition, and initial funds to start mixing my own juices. Please report your experiences, maybe I can be convinced to take the plunge. :)

The initial cost can easily be limited to what your next two bottles of pre-made juince would cost. You do not need to start out with a bunch of equipment. If you are willing to settle for unflavored, you can make that for less than $0.03 per ml.

Exactly, even with a couple flavors, you could easily get into this very cheap. There are places that sell the nic as small as 30ml bottles very very cheap, flavors you can get sample sizes for around $1.50 each,pg and vg can both be gotten very cheap, then a couple syringes and a few bottles, and your all set to get started, easily under $40.

Welcome to the wonderful world of DYI mixing. To help you on your adventure let me recommend the following:

Read my blogs before getting started

E-Cigarette Forum - dannyv45 - Blogs

then read hoosier's blogs.

E-Cigarette Forum - Hoosier - Blogs

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's.

Well Warblaze, the secret to a happy relationship is to always remember its far easier to get forgiveness than permission. :)

If I say "honey, im gonna get this" of course she will get all huffy and say how we dont need it and how its useless and a waste, nag, nag, nag.... But if I go ahead and just get it she will be upset for a while, maybe a day or five but in that time she totally avoids me and I have all the time in the world to enjoy what I just got. Plus she can go to her mommas and talk with her sisters about what I did "this time" and be happy. Its a win win situation!

That sounds exactly how my wife is,it's always "you already have enough" when it comes to flavors, tanks, mods, etc. so my game plan stays the same every week,i get paid on thursdays,so i wake up 20 minutes early every thursday, and pay for my order that i set up the night before.I usually keep it under $20 a week, which helps ease the headache later on,sometimes iget lucky and she doesn't even notice haha.

Very good and useful info in both yours and Hoosier blogs. Thanks for sharing. After reading and reading and more reading it occurred to me that I started learning about DIY with an attitude that I was taking on a monumental task when it is really a simple task if people follow the basic rules that you and Hoosier as well as others shared. Patience and comon sense seem to be the key of making ejuice and I am patiently waiting for my DIY stuff to arrive and I can get started on my first batch.
I am going to employ the KISS theory and with luck will have mostly good batches to start out with and blog my progress to maybe help others.

I know how that is very well BM, I have heard many times how I dont need or thats a waste or something like that. She even asked me once (and only once) "what are you, stupid" of which I did remind her that I was with her.
If I can get the mail before she gets home or UPS shows up before she gets home its all cool. Its when i am at work and packages come that she gets is when I hear "what you ordered now". lol

Some people think the patience part is optional, but it may be the most important resource for ensuring success, or at least absence of serious mishaps. And that applies to a lot of things beside DIY e-juice. And no, it's not all that hard or complex, but there are, as you say, some basic rules and concepts that should be well understood. Your approach will serve you well.

I been with mine for 26 years and she knows me well. She asked me not long ago why I keep doing things that I know will anger her and I told her I might as well give her a valid reason to be mad and save her the trouble of dreaming up a reason.... That one lasted a few weeks lol

It don't take much you can spend as little as $40.00. Here's my blog for the first time DYI'er. You can get just the bare minimum or go hog wild. The rest of my blogs are also very informative (Link below) expecially the first time walk through

Supplies

What you need to know as a first time juicer.

This blog is based on my own experiences and is written as my own personal opinion and should be taken as that only. Please remember to follow and observe all safety precautions.

Many new users wind up in the pit falls of what do I purchase and what do I not purchase. Many over think and over complicate there purchase and wind up spending far more money then they need to.

The Kit:

Many people will by a kit thinking this will give me exactly what I need. I don't really like kits because you get a lot of what you need but also stuff you don't need and you’re stuck with what ever quality they decide to give you which is usually the cheapest. My though is get what you need and not what you don’t need. It will usually be far cheaper and you get better quality.

Bottles:

If your going to steep your mix in hot water or in an Ultrasonic cleaner or intend to store your liquid supplies for a long period you will want to purchase glass bottles. Hard Plastic glass like bottles as they age may leach some of its polymer molecules into the mix which may be a health concern. Soft plastic squeeze bottles are not good choices for long term storage because they tend to leach oxygen through the bottle walls over a long period of time causing excess oxidation. Soft plastic squeeze bottles do not present a polymer leaching issue like the harder plastic bottles and are a better solution for short term storage.

To see more on steeping read my other blogs at:

E-Cigarette Forum - dannyv45 - Blogs

Soft squeeze luer lock needle tip bottles are wonderful to store your finished juices in and make it so easy to fill carto’s.

Recommended bottle sizes.

10, 10ml bottles (for test samples)
5, 30ml bottles

Syringes and measuring devices:

Fluid measuring devices are critical for accurate reproduction of a mix. There is nothing worst then using drops or haphazardly measuring and coming up with a fantastic juice and not being able to reproduce it. Exact electronic pipettes or calculating a dropper bottle to count how many drops to a ml may work for some but this can be a hassle. This is why I suggest using syringes and Graduated Cylinders.

Recommended syringes and Graduated Cylinder

Quantity 3, 1ml luer loc syringes
Quantity 3, 3ml syringes
Quantity 3, 10ml syringes
Quantity 1, 50ml Graduated Cylinder

I personally use a 50ml cylinder for measuring out my 1oz mix bases and measuring large quantities of base fluids.

As for luer lock needles the larger the gauge the easier fluid will pass through it.

Large = 14 - 18 gauge used for PG, and Nic solution. For measuring thick fluid like VG use a syringe without a needle attached.
Medium = 20 – 22 Gauge For PG (to thin for VG)
Small = 24 – 26 gauge for measuring PG and alcohol based flavors and can give a consistent small drop.

Safety and safety gear:

This should be self explanatory but remember Nicotine solution is toxic in large mg amounts so all safety precautions should be observed. In smaller amounts such as 12mg, 18mg, 24mg it’s not a serious issue just wash it off your skin right away. Larger quantities can be more serious especially if ingested.
I recommend viewing the following video and bookmark it for future reference. It explains safety in all aspects of DYI.

This is a must view video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOBDm8tSUEU&app=desktop

Recommended safety gear:

Rubber gloves
* Goggles
* aprin

* Optional

I recommend my freedom smokes to get mixing supplies as they have the best assortment and best quality that I’ve found.

http://www.myfreedomsmokes.com/

I also have bought bulk syringes and bottles from Ebay and Amazon at a substantial savings.

The Calculator

One of the most helpful tools you could own is a mixing calculator. You can calculate your NIC base, VG, PG content and flavor percentages. Save your favorite recipes and notes, calculate NIC combining ratios etc... All in one easy to use handy tool and best of all it's free.

I give the highest recommendation to the E-Juice me up calculator.

eJuice Me Up - Best eJuice Calculator

So there you have it. All you need now are your flavors, PG solution, VG solution and NIC solution and you’re on your way. All I can say here is spend cautiously until you get the hang of it. Don't go out and by 100 flavors all at once or buy large quantities of base solutions. It gets expensive and causes overload as what to make first with so much to choose from. 3 - 5 flavors are plenty to start off with.

Recommendations on NIC base solutions and flavors are beyond the scope of this blog and will be covered in a future blog.

My other vaping blogs can be seen at:

Good luck and happy vaping

The true secret (at least in my case) has been to reserve a portion of my "secret purchases" budget to get a small gift for my wife! That way, I start off the conversation with something like: "Finally, this (insert name of desired gift) that I've been waiting to give you finally arrived. And cool, I got that package I was waiting for as well, but that can wait! Yes, that last part is a blatant lie but with a gift in hand, it's usually tolerated!

Well sadly voice, I tried that before and she swore up and down that I did it out of a guilty consciense. Told her the only thing I was guilty of was trying to make her happy (played the victim to the hilt!) and I will never make that mistake again which stole a lot of her thunder but still, it backfired miserably on me lol.
What works best for me is to try to time it so the packages arrive when I am at home and then burn the boxes before she gets home, that way I can say "BTW dear I burnt the trash like you asked" lol I had a brand new computer for over a year before she even noticed the larger screen, then I just claimed I bought a new screen a while back that was on sale. ;)
