The Rest of the Story: Tobacco News Analysis and Commentary

Spotted this today.

In part:

The American Lung Association states: "There is no scientific evidence that e-cigarettes are safer for consumers than regular tobacco products."

Along the same lines, the American Lung Association states: "It would be dishonest to let smokers think they are making a positive change by switching to these products rather than quitting."

Once again, the Lung Association is stating that it is just as healthy to smoke cigarettes as it is to quit smoking, if you quit smoking through the use of electronic cigarettes.

Both sides of the argument, whether our side or theirs, both rely on scientific evidence. The battle will be fought over the presence or lack of scientific evidence. We all must need more scientific evidence. Currently it seems the arguments are based more on subjective rather than objective criteria. The suppliers have the funds and need more willingness to get involved.

Don't go crazy here. It does take a long time to slowly die from cigarettes.
We all know there could be bad things down the road from vaping.
Although whatever they may be, if any, can not possibly be as bad as from smoking.
BUT it was designed by a Chinese doctor, and the immediate effects of vaping in the short term (1 week in to 3 years in) are clearly better than smoking. That is a VERY good article.

The document that Mike Siegel wrote about at http://www.iafp.com/legislative/SB3174e-cigarettes.pdf is more than a month old, and has been posted and discussed on ECF before, and was exposed and criticized by e-cigarette advocates last month when successfully campaigning to defeat the legislation in Illinois).

During the past month, I've sent that document (along with my criticism of its false and misleading claims) to my large e-mail list (which includes 1,200 anti-smoking, anti-tobacco and anti e-cigarette folks), posted in on several large anti tobacco forums (with more than 4,000 anti tobacco advocates).

I also sent it the document to its author Janet Williams at jw1440@aol.com and IL ALA lobbyist Kathy Drea kdrea@lungil.org exposing/criticizing their false claims and urging them to make corrections and apologize, urging them to stop trying to ban e-cigarette sales to adults, and to join us in trying to amend the bill so it just bans e-cigarette sales to youth.

Neither Janet or Kathy has responded to me since, and they refused to endorse (when asked by the IL House Human Services Committee Chair) amending the bill to ban e-cigarette sales to youth. As such, the bill died. I urge e-cigarette consumers to send e-mails to Janet and Kathy.

I also sent the document to Mike Siegel, who wrote the article on his blog.

the American Lung Association states: "It would be dishonest to let smokers think they are making a positive change by switching to these products rather than quitting."

Again and again, One question: Quitting WHAT?? "let" smokers think?? We can't have that!! My husband says things like that all the time, I'm on to him too!
"let" me clean the litter box, I'm so good at it. Yah, from all the practice!
"let" me clean the toilet, I don't know where that brush thing goes........... And OMG you mean the outside too?
"let" me go get groceries, I'll hold the door for you while you carry in. I don't have my shoes on.
ALA: "let" me think what might be better, smoking or vaping.

Here is another question.
1. How much money has The American Lung Assn. recieved from tabacco?
2. How much money has The American Lung Assn. recieved from e-cigarettes?

That should be public information somewhere. I also wonder how many of these "not-for-profits" have actually engaged in politics perhaps jeopardizing their 501(c)(3) status.

Yes but please don't forget Kristin :) She works very hard as well
Thanks Dennis, but much credit goes to Spikey, JustJulie, Treece, Vocalek, yvilla, Territoo, Webby, Thulium, Taz3cat, eplanet and a few others who participate regularly.

Those are the people calling and meeting with legislators, writing letters, organizing activists, setting up informational websites, creating informational packets for legislators, organizing fundraisers, Vapefest, posting articles, watching state governments, filing the amicus brief, etc.

Bill is a great mentor and Dr. Siegel is like a rock star, but the people I named above do a lot of unsung gruntwork that gets things done and no one even knows about.

One time, I went to take a drag on my e-cig, and I poked myself in the eye! This thing is dangerous...Im chucking it all in the trash until the government tells me its safe. Because the government loves me.

Oh yeah? Well more than once I have inhaled from my e-cig, got nothing, looked and saw that I had put the wrong end in my mouth. The blue light came on all right, but no vapor comes out of that end. ;)

Now, think of what the result would have been if I put the wrong end of a lit tobacco cigarettes into my mouth!
