does anyone know where to get nimh AAA's and a fast charger for CHEAP? I'm using that same box inside my mod at the moment, but i'm only using alkalines, because all of the rechargables at radio shack were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive, like 12 bucks for two batteries.

How'd the alkalines work out for you? I'm planning that into this as an emergency backup in case you out, your batteries die and caught without a charged set of batteries.

Walmart, lowes, home depot, grocery store... just about anywhere. Radioshack is expensive on batterys.

Lowes (not sure if they are us wide but are like home depot) has a set of 4 rechargeable ray-o-vac NiMh for 5 bucks (or may have been Walmart, it was 7 months ago :) ).

The charger I have cost about 30 dollars but it is worth it when you can charge your batteries in 15 minutes at home or in the car.

Here is the charger I use...
15 minute charger

thanks puck

i went to the dollar store and picked up some very cheap one's last night, and ive been vaping all last night and today, and they're still going strong.
I'm using a 4081 atty though, and im not sure about the resistance on it. so not sure if it would last as long with a 901

nm spoke too soon, the first set just bit the dust.

I have a 4081 tucked away in my vapebox (my first e-cig). I'll test the resistance when i get home because you have my curiosity raised now :)

awesome, ive tried just about every atomizer out there and i have to say that i like the 4081 the best. my current ones been going for like five or six months at six volts, and still vapes like its brand new. :D

ps. if you want to try using it again, metal tire caps have the perfect threading for making a connector

Cool, will test when I get home.

Well I just tested and and they range from 3.1. to 3.3 ohms. Looks like a good candidate for the Puck mod. It is about the same as a 901 atomizer so it should behave about the same as far as battery life.

So if anyone is wanting to build the Puck or any version like it, looks like the 4081 atomizer resistance could be a good fit besides the 901 atomizer. The only problem will be the connector. You can't get that at Radio Shack but one can be had at different places online or by tearing an old 4081 battery apart or a metal tire cap as Johnny Bobcat has mentioned (Thanks JB).

The 901 connector for the Puck can be had at Radio Shack along with all of the other parts it needs..

you may want to add something into the tutorial about checking the polarity of the LED before soldering, because some people may not know that LEDs are diodes

I thought I put something in there about my LED has the long lead as positive but maybe I didn't put that photo in. I'll check it out and make it more prominate.

Thanks for the heads up :)

edit... I added a whole section talking about the LED polarity now to be safe now.

Thanks JB

Since there is some interest in using the Puck with a 510 atomizer, I just ordered a 510 to 901 adapter and a 510 atomizer to give it a test.

With the adapter I ordered, the same power jack from Radio Shack still could be used, making the parts extremely cheap while still maintaining the design. The adapter was only a couple bucks so it will still make this mod < $15.00 for all of the parts.

If the 510 tests out favorable with decent battery life, everyone can have a small, cheap box mod they can make that uses standard rechargable batteries and can last for more than a day.

Future Plans (in the works) for the Puck...
1. Small bottom juice feed for the 901 atomizer.
2. Emergency Mode - Allows you to use 3 AAA akalines in an emergency (caught out with dead batteries).

I don't think the plug/fake battery is necessary, 4 cheap AAA's dont stay at six volts for very long, and mellow out within a few hits

You got a good point there.

I'm going to test it out just to see how long they will last and if it doesn't hit to harsh with 4 alkaline AAAs. That's one thing I don't like is a really harsh hit even if it is just temporary or emergency until I get home to get some fresh charged up batts. Got to be strong but mellow :)

I made a new discovery this morning, I just received my nimh batts in the mail yesterday, and WOW does it ever make a difference!! Even the very first hit off of four fresh Alkalines is no where near as powerful as every hit off of the nimh's. My charger gives a digital readout on the voltage of the rechargeables and they hit nearly 1.6v before it says they're full. Also, The batteries I bought claim to be 1000mah, so that adds up to 6.4v and 4000mah. Nimh are definitely the way to go. I would have thought they'd produce less vapor than the alkalines, and just last longer, but it seems they produce WAY more vapor, and last much much longer. So yes, alkalines will work in a pinch, but don't expect great results.

That's why I've been able to quit analogs. The MiMh batteries have worked so well for me, I really don't need lions or other types. Also, I've been using the same two sets for over 7 months, charging them on a 15 minute charger every day. I don't think you can beat them if you really want some power behind your vape.

Akalines are just for emergency use only when you're caught between a rock and a hard place as you said. The nice thing about NiMh is, you can buy them anywhere when you need to. No ordering if you don't want to.

I think though, that if all of the batteries are 1000 mah and you put them in series to get 4.8 volts or higher, you still will have 1000 mah. the milliamps per hour will only increase if you put them in parallel but then you wouldn't get the voltage you need. But... 1000 mah should be enough to run you a day and a half or more.

NiMh batteries are work horses and run circles around akaline. If you look at their power curve, the voltage stays pretty flat until around the end of their discharge cycle like lions but just are just larger and it takes more of them. I really don't care about using more of them and their size if it keeps me off analogs and I can buy them anywhere :)

Nm, you're totally right about it still being 1000mah, total brainfart on my part

What atomizer are you running on those?

I'm using a 4081, I've found that i like it the best overall for: vapor, th, flavor, and most of all longevity. It really is damn near impossible to kill these things. when i first got into modding, I was using an unboxed rig, and it somehow got stuck on for like ten minutes before i noticed a funky smell. I looked over and my atty was glowing red hot, not just the coil but the tube as well. I disconnected it, let it cool down, and put some liquid in it... and low and behold it fired right up just as if nothing ever happened, no burnt taste either because these don't have any wicking material.
