vaping is the most accurate term. We said smoke because we were lighting an analog and inhaling the smoke from the burning tobacco. With e-cigs the liquid is being vaporized (turned into vapor) by the atomizer. So we say vape.

I have no problem saying vape, it is a term specific to e-cigs and most accurate as to what you are doing.

Like when you are building a PV we say it is a mod, not a modified e-cig.

I really hate the word vape although that is what it is (vape is to inhale vapor) No one seems to know what it is if I say vape. I know it is wrong to say I am smoking an electronic cigarette but sometimes that is what I say. My husband looks at me wierd when I say the word vape. He says it sound like something you would do with drugs.

I also hate the word analog for cigarettes. I just call them cigarettes and never use the word analog.(sometimes on the forum I will use the word analog but it just doesn't sound right to me.

Maybe someone can come up with a better word for vape and analog.

We are dealing with a specialized hobby or if you want, means of quitting smoking.

When you have a hobby or get interested in a particular subject or new creation, there will be a whole new vocabulary for it. If you were interested in electronics I am sure that there are terms and words used that are associated with it other then transistor or capacitor.

If you choose to use another term, that is up to you but when talking to others who are into the same subject, they will be using the terms associated with that subject.

For people who are not familiar with the terms yet, use whatever term you want that will most accurately express to them what you are trying to convey.

I'm a fogger, and proud of it! :D My wife and her friend thought a whole evening about what they thought I was doing, and they were so giggly when they came up with fogging. I don't really care what other people think, because I can finally BREATHE!

As for analog, I usually just say paper cigarette when talking about them.

Guess you could call it Misting, Fogging, Vaping, Steaming, etc... whatever makes you comfortable. If I put in some JC juice (unfortunately still have some) then I might even call it Smogging since it smells so bad on exhale.

I have a feeling this has been discussed in other places but I haven't come across it yet in my searches - does anyone else secretly wish that maybe a different word would come into vogue as an alternative to "vape" and "vaping"?

I'm trying to get my pack-a-day husband to see the light and at least give vaping a try, but I think a combination of things, including the fact that it's called "vaping", is making him pretty disinterested. I can't even say it to other people, to be honest, it just sounds, well, weird. Maybe it's because it's foreign-sounding from the world of smoking vocabulary.

Anyone ever refer to it as "puffing" instead? I'm not totally wild about that one either, but it sounds more cig-related, since people do puff on cigarettes. Of course if you think about that and associate it with powder puffs, that doesn't sound wildly masculine either. :)

Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone has a few fun alternative words they use to describe what we are doing. I think I saw someone refer to it as fogging, which was kind of interesting. I told my husband I was fake smoking, so he calls it "faking", but I doubt that's one many people would want to use.

Any thoughts?

HHAHA
no, i think its cool enough to be silly and silly enough to be cool.
its going on almost 2 months and when my friends and i Vape and sip,
its a hoot!!!!!!!!! i love it! its truly MORE fun than analogs! and the "language" always makes me smile!!!

I'm only a recent convert (6 weeks smoke free) but I hated the terminology when I first started and I still hate it now. Vape, vaping, analog (a term which I swore I would never use) and maybe especially PV. Personal Vaporizer sounds like some kind of sex toy to me!

I agree 100% with the idea that we need to distance ourselves from the terminology of smoking and cigarettes (e-cigarettes doesn't work for me, either), but I would love for a new lexicon to take hold.

It was soooo easy for me to switch from Marlboro's to the Vapor King that I want to tell everyone I know about it, but the terminology and the newness of it get in the way. Heck - I find myself actually AVOIDING vaping (ugh, I said it) in some of the places that I used to smoke!

I have no suggestions, tho!

I agree, too. I 'm new, but I just can't get my head around the word. However, you have to use it in certain situations to distinguish between sucking on a tobacco cylinder and sucking on an electronic one.

I think there are 3 kinds of electronic cigarette users...hard-core hobbyists who love the whole culture behind it, occasional users who buy one and use it when they can't smoke, and those of us who fall in between the two.

You can say that for just about anything, but I guess my point is that we all have our different comfort levels of how into this we are. Again, I'm new...but I still use the old terms because I feel more comfortable.

It's all symantics. hmmm....that makes me wonder if the anti-ecig propaganda people would still have such a problem with this if it was called something else - something that wasn't related to cigarettes and smoking. If it was related to kittens and bunnies, would they scream how "poisonous" this is? Just a thought. :D

I like the term "Vaping", it is a logical transition from "Smoking".

I'm not to crazy about "Personal Vaporizer", though...it does sound a bit too clinical, kinky or asthmatic. "E-cig" has become somewhat of a standard, thanks to the media and the fact that the term will be most recognizable and understood to people hearing about them for the first time.

When I started with a Greensmoke, my "greensmoke" is what I called it. I just say "VK" or "Vaporking" now, since that is what I use exclusively.

I have used "hit", "drag", "puff", "shot" and "taste" as descriptors of actually vaping, as well.

Some, just close friends that like to give me a hard time a lot, make fun of me and the lingo, but I don't care. I call it vaping and pv most of the time. But when I'm describing it to new people I say electronic cigarette and them it's better to call it a personal vaporizer because there is no cigarette smoke whatsoever and then they get it and then I go on into it's not smoking any more, it's vaping. I always tell them, ya it sounds weird, but it's not smoking so I don't like to refer to it as that. People get it, they may give you crazy looks but it works once they understand it. As long as I have my pv is all good :)

I tell any casual acquaintance that I am partaking in Alternative Nicotine Therapy because my doctor suggested that I quit smoking.

It sounds likes a medical study and these people rarely ask any more. If they do continue to inquire, I tell them it does the same thing as the patch and leave it at that. I get tired of explaining it to every Tom, Richard and Harry.

I like that 2Packs....your A.N.T. device.

Oh, and as far as "buttplugs" and "condoms" go...I think those terms are hilarious and apt. They will most likely only be used in the company of other vapers, not noobs or strangers, and are perfect, descriptive terms for their usage. "Rubber endcap thingy" and "other rubber endcap thingy with the pole in it" just don't have the same pizazz.
