Hey N2rock... I love talking guns and CC.... (I'm an NRA Instructor and I teach that class the most).

Here's the deal with picking a gun for CC. It's all personal and opinion! Find the gun that you like and can shoot the best. Pick a caliber you can shoot effectively and accurately.

Myself I carry a full size 1911 and I don't have any problems. I used to carry a Springfield Armory XD... loved that gun actually. But anyway the point is what suits you. Once you have the tool then you can shop for the accessories.... holsters and such.... and then you'll be looking at other guns too. Winter carry versus summer carry. How you carry whether outside the pants or inside the pants or in a pocket.

If you have any specific questions or something or want an opinion on something feel free to PM me or reply and I'll tell you what I can.

me and my wife are taking the CHL class & test next weekend. I've always been more of a rifle guy. I only own one handgun- a .38 Revolver which is not really a good Conceal carry gun. My wife likewise handles a rifle very well, but very little experience with handgun. We're both going out tomorrow with a friend that has some handguns for us to use for the day to warm up for the class/test next week.

In the way of conceal carry, I would like to hear opinions on good options for us look at when it comes time to buy.

Wow that goes along the lines of what is the best APV. It all depends on what you and the mrs will enjoy and feel comfortable with buddy. Some people like revolvers(Like me), some like semi-autos.

You think the list of vaping devices is huge, wait till you start looking at small handguns for ccw. That list would put Santa's good kid list to shame ;-)

My other half likes her Lady Smith 357 revolver for conceal but she was shooting our friends ruger lc380 and liked it. She likes shooting my 1911's too so i got her a ruger lc9 for christmas to add to her ccw license. I prefer the Ruger SR1911 Commander for CCW but i have a Ruger KLCR 357 for the ankle holster backup. A revolver will never jam on you. You may get a misfire but just pull the trigger again to move onto the next one. Just like vaping, backups for your backups ;-)

Do you know what guns you will be shooting at ur buddies place?

While I should just ignore you, I'll respond to your post as a responsible gun owner even though it appears to be obvious trolling - after all, why would you even click on a firearms thread considering your stance, which no one here is obviously going to alter in any way, shape or form.

Not a single innocent has ever died from my hobby & I can probably assume the same from these other gentlemen who've been enjoying this thread along with me. My right is getting costly with every purchase of ammo, reloading supplies, the next firearm I would like to enjoy, etc., but it has never cost anything more than that, not your or anyone else's freedom, life or way you choose to live that life. I'm sincerely sorry that you feel the need to lump any breathing creature who is able to pick up a firearm into the same group, unable to differentiate between a responsible enthusiast & some idiot, wacko, gangbanger or any other less than desirable character who chose to misuse a tool for a poor reason. Lastly, I'll promise you two things - if I see a thread where you and your friends are happily discussing your topic of interest that doesn't concern me, or perhaps I'm even against the idea, I won't click on it. That's your freedom, that's your right, no matter how I feel about it. Secondly, if one of the aforementioned 'bad guys' ever attempts to cause you or yours serious harm, I promise I will respect your view on firearms & stay out of the way.

You'll let me die, despite having the means to protect me, because I think that the right to fire arms should be highly revered by those who utilize that right due to the cost of that right? I don't know if it's my fault. Maybe I came across mean spirited and deserve a veiled "I hope you die while I watch" response. Maybe I'm a troll for simply stating your right comes at a cost and I hope you revere it. I'm not going to dictate your opinion to you. I drink and innocent lives are the cost of having booze in society. I'm not judging. I'm also not lying to myself by claiming that my habit/hobby doesn't cost innocent lives. That's why I think it's very important that I appreciate every drop. I was just saying the same thing but for the gun culture. So, yes. You can watch, or better yet fantasize about watching me being brutalized to death while you stand idly by with a gun that you won't use to save me because I think it's important to have an appreciation for the cost of our rights. Good man.

I posted in hopes to have a little common ground whether I agree with the policy or not. That's why I didn't say I'm for or against. I just said that it comes at a cost. No need to pretend that it doesn't. So live it up.

Nope, you should buy a mech. They're the best. You're not a real vaper unless you have a mech. :D

Sorry, had to.

I've shot a few that people will swear up, down & sideways that they're the ultimate carry, but if it doesn't fit my hand, what good is it to me? Did you shoot the LC9 before you picked that one up? From time to time I almost wish I got that instead of the LCP.

LOL i dont do mechs and i dont rebuild. :p Yeah i had shot her friends lc380 so i tried an lc9 at the range, loved it. its more for her though. She likes my 1911 and she loved the lc380. I wanted a little more punch with the 9 than the 380 for her. Im fortunate enough to have 40 acres so i carved out my own shooting range in the back of the property so i can plink whenever we dam well please. I get some interested company when i shoot the tannerite bombs at the holidays, lolol.

Just to clarify LC380 = LCP? I know of the LCP, LCR & LC9, but I'm not very good on keeping up to date on the stuff that comes out. I can rattle off Sig models off the top of my head, but I couldn't tell you the difference between any of the Glocks. Hell, I couldn't even tell you which ones I've fired - I appreciated them for what they were, but they just aren't a good fit with me. I can completely understand why there are the folks out there that absolutely love them though.

Picking a carry pistol is always a compromise. Big guns are easier to shoot, but if they're so big you don't carry them then it doesn't matter. Tiny mouseguns are easy to drop in a pocket but might not get the job done. Bigger round in smaller guns seem ideal, but they're often punishing to fire and thus discourage practice.

I carry a PF-9 most often. It's got a pocket clip attached so it's stupidly easy to conceal, I'm confident in 9mm, and it's not so difficult to shoot that I don't put at least a couple mags through it whenever I'm at the range. But if I'm wearing a coat or just don't feel like hiding it all that much, I much prefer a full size 1911 or the Steyr M9-A1.

That Beretta Jetfire is one of exactly two .25s I'd ever consider carrying. Most pistols in that caliber are total junk.

First of all, congrats on taking the steps to get your CCW and exercising your Constitutional right. :toast:

I have carried several different kinds of handguns but I finally settled on a full size 1911 for my EDC. It takes a little more work to conceal but it can be done. You have to remember that once you start conceal carrying you will probably have to change your wardrobe to dress around your gun in order to properly conceal it. The most important thing is to carry what you shoot the best. Try out several different kinds of handgun platforms and get what you shoot the best with.

I would also recommend taking a few training classes. They will help you break some bad habits that you may not even know that you had developed and it will teach you how to proficiently use your weapon. They will also teach you how to train proficiently with you weapon. Anybody can go to the range and punch paper, but that's all most people do is exactly that; punch paper. There are several drills that you will learn that will help you make better use of your range time and become more proficient with your weapon.

Best of luck and keep us updated on how things go.

negatory Oz. The LCP models are pocket pistols. the LC380 is basically the LC9 in 380. Dam near identical in size and weight. Im in agreeance with you on glocks. Ive shot a bunch of them that my sheriff buddies own and i just dont like them. To each his/her own i say. Oddly enough, i had shot a 1911 many years ago and didnt like it. Picked up another one a few years ago and fell in love deeply with em. Ive always been a revolver guy but that platform is just amazing IMHO.

Heres a link to the LC9, the 380 is right above it on the right hand side menu.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that one before. I think if I was getting a daily carry of that size, I'd go straight the LC9 though (over the LC380 anyways). I guess I just don't see why someone would choose to carry 380 except for the smaller frame that can utilize it. Around here 380 & 9 are the same price per box, sometimes the 380 is just a touch more. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot the 1911 yet but I do like a lot of it's features (on paper). It's not on my list at the moment anyway & I have thousands of dollars to spend before I can start thinking of other ones to add.

P229
AR15 complete in 5.56 (haven't decided on manufacturer yet, I like the Sigs, but I'll probably go with something more affordable)
AR15 build in 5.56 (SI Defense Upper/Lower - I really want a MT made AR)
Benelli 12g (Supernova Tactical Pistol Grip & the Vinci)
9mm Sig (undecided on model, maybe P226)
Colt Python (oh, to dream)
AR15 in .22LR (probably another build)

The first 2 are in order, the rest are close to the order I'd like them in, the major exception being the Python. Right price, right gun, I'll have to jump on it if the budget allows.

Thats why i got her the lc9 instead of the 380 ;-)

Ive owned a few 357's in my day. The python being one of them. it got stolen many years ago. Great gun. Taurus, soso. the cylinder ejector rod kept unscrewing, sold it. Ive now got the Ruger GP100 and ive put a couple thousand rounds thru it now and it is a freakin workhorse!! Love it as much as i did the python. My buddy has an anaconda...freakin monstrous hand cannon. Im thinkin of picking up the 500 s&w just to one up him ;-)

I've never been a fan of any of the Taurus models. The Anaconda is a beast! The .500... well... yeah :D Honestly I'd probably get a .50AE if I was looking for a .50 cal, but I tend to lean a little more towards the semi-auto's anyways.

I had the PT99 for a few years. It actually wasnt a bad semi as they go. But the revolver was just junk. Ive heard the quality has been on the decline since day one.

Thanks to all for the advice on the CCW/CHL

The guns I tried out (out at my buddy's ranch) were S&W M&P9 Vtac, M&P9, and Ruger LCP 380. Not a huge selection.

My absolute favorite was the Vtac. Sweet shooting gun there, but definitely too big for me to conceal carry (and definitely not the price range I want LOL). The LCP was great for conceal carry, but was not fun to shoot at all. I shot it just fine, but after only 3 magazines thru it, I was hating it.

I live in a very warm weather area (Hot most of the year). So small size is definitely a plus. As such, the LCP definitely fits the bill as it fit right in my pocket without printing... I just stumble on the issue of it not being enjoyable to shoot- I mean, I do have to train with whatever I get. So I want something that training with it won't feel like a chore (if you know what I mean).

I did get spoiled by shooting the Vtac first. After shooting a couple mags thru that, it was hard to accept anything that followed it LOL

Well. I'm in no rush to buy, so I'll take my time. There are a couple ranges in the area that have a variety of rental guns. So I'll definitely be hitting those ranges up and testing some out.

I guess the better question is NOT "what guns would you guys recommend", but rather "what guns should I absolutely not even consider"? Based on quality and dependability?

The LCP is a mean little beast. If the one you shot didn't have the factory extension on the magazine, fuhgettaboutit. ;) It definitely takes some time to get used to & to be able to trust it in a situation where it really matters. I didn't feel comfortable with mine until I had a good 2 boxes through it. The factory mag extension makes a world of difference & there's an even longer aftermarket one that gets your pinky on there too. Perhaps take the step up to the LC9, which is a little bit bigger, but much easier to handle.
