I'm looking for something that's basic, and as little flavoring liquid as possible (not in the sense as to make it tasteless, but I'm trying to avoid the highly diluted PG type of flavorings), so basically menthol extract %, VG %, and water %.

Granted, I realize that this sounds pretty simple, and I should just mix in a bit more water at a time, and a bit more menthol, until I find something that works, but a starting point from someone that has experience would save a fair bit of time and wasted liquid, and maybe someone else will see the response in their search here as well.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

If you are using regular glycerin (VG) and want to make it aqueous glycerin, the recommended dilution is usually 15% to 20% water (or ethyl alcohol) and the remaining 80-85% glycerin. You of course can dilute it each time you create a mix, but I find it easier to divide the glycerin into 2 bottles and add the 15% water to each, that way it is always good to go. If you were going to use the crystals, I would add a few to a small amount of warmed AG until they dissolve, and then use THAT as your flavoring to add to another bottle of VG., a drop at a time, until you get the strength you want. Just a suggestion if you would rather not work with the crystals (they are strong!) you only need a few drops (of even a PG pre-mix) of menthol to flavor a mix, especially if you want a mild one, so you wouldn't add a significant amount of PG to it. I swear though that I've seen straight VG premixed menthol too. Good luck!

I tried to dissolve some menthol crystals in 70/30 vg/water and they won't stay dissolved, when the solution cools the menthol solidifies on the top.

Not knowing anything when I got my package of goodies, and being too impatient to look up every little thing, the first thing I did was fill a 10ml bottle with 96%, aka PGA, and drop a big menthol crystal in it. Gave it a shake and forgot about it for a few hours. When I looked at it again it had completely dissolved.

Then I read that most people dissolve their menthol crystals in alcohol at a ratio of 50/50... So I added a some more crystals. Dissolved beautifully in about an hour (perhaps faster, I didn't check). It is still not anywhere near the strength of the mixes I read about, but I've been using a few drops (roughly 1-2 drops per 1ml) of this menthol spirit to add to my PG/VG mixes, and it is quite enough menthol flavour for me.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with a pure VG base too (I should try it - ETA, dang, I can't, all my nic is in PG). And seeing how easily the crystals dissolved in the spirit, I'm pretty sure they would dissolve nicely in plain vodka too, maybe take a little bit longer, but shouldn't be too long.
