Well, it doesn't seem likely to be the batteries as even a week magnet will ghost a LCD on a laptop but they've got a big-.... lithium ion battery appendage. You could accidentally be making a magnetic field in/from the vase if the surface either is conductive, moisture builds up to make it conductive, or there is metal of any sort in there. Or, I guess what would be a worst case, if one of the batteries was internally shorting in a sense but you'd probably feel some heat off of that one.

And what kind of monitor is it? If it's a classic CRT the way and reasons it start gausing are different than a LCD. -Magnus

I'd like to just say the two things aren't related because it'd be a BIG magnetic field to pull the little router/modem down too and then also be a clever magnetic field to let it continue to function smoothly too.

Leave it away from the equipment for now if you can. And if you have some paper clips see if when you bring one close it magnetizes to any of the batteries. It would just be a pretty specific environment to cause such a thing. I have to believe there is another explanation that would present itself at visual examination. Hrmm. -Magnus

The router (thanks for the name on that) Fell over because I am a klutz..nothing to do with magnets..lol! I have everything moved around now so we will see if that helps. I'll try the paperclip thing tomorrow. I just thought because there are 20 batts in the vase and a pile of cartos..maybe all together they may have distorted the screen. It was a shot in the dark.
Thank you for your kindness magnus! :)

if speakers are built-in, they would have been shielded by the mfr (I would think) and that shouldn't go away for near any reason that I can think of?
from the pics, even if there was a mag. field, the jar is way too far away from the screen (IMO) to cause that.
wondering how old the monitor is now? perhaps it's giving out?
I don't think the cordless phone or lamp would do it either... my monitor site below a fluorescent lamp, and the phone here is even closer than yours is...
hmm... a bit of a puzzler...

what's that under the other LCD (or TV?) if it's a receiver sometimes those can mess with things (especially if it's throwing off a lot of heat..which they tend to do.) i agree with the paper clip test...one other thing that seems a possibility is that electric pencil sharpener. move it away as well. if the speakers are starting to go on the fritz that could definitely be a problem. if the speakers are detachable i'd take them off the monitor as well. it's best if you try those one at a time so you can isolate and determine what exactly is the trouble maker. if none of those make a difference it might simply be the monitor slowly dieing...

Many years ago a customer called to tell me they couldn't read the screen on the server's monitor. It was an old green screen mono CRT monitor so you know this was a LONG time ago. They described the problem this way. "The screen is doing a hula"

Sure enough I get down there and the screen looks like it's doing a hula dance. I stood back and examined the situation with the owner standing next to me. I reached up and moved the electric alarm clock that was next to the monitor and wouldn't you know that the problem went away.

The reaction from the customer was priceless.

With that said I keep several batteries and cartos right under my LCD and no problems.

I'm just not seeing it, with those types of batteries, even shorting within and against each other.. I'm just not seeing the relation. I have this liquid that is magnetic that I'll put some in one of those jam jars and bring to Vapestock with me. Just slide it across the desk slowly and it'll crawl up the sides of the jar when it encounters anything strong enough to cause what you're seeing.

When done put it up on a shelf to freak people out and say it's the "Black Oil" from the X-Files. Keep a small hidden magnetic palmed in your hand while you're petting your oh-so-lovely Alien oil. ;-) -Magnus
