hey guys,

ok so im doing this research on ecigs for myself. I realize that whenever I vape in public or tell my friends about it, they get worried about how bad it is. I have some friends who smokes often and wont even use my ecig because theyre scared. I have the chi you, stingray and tesla m5, all those they think looks weird.

So A few questions:

If you didnt know what an ecig was, the big ones, what would you have thought of it when you first see someone smoking it?
Are ecigs socially acceptable? Why or why not?
What can we do to make it socially acceptable?

My friends dad thinks we were smoking perfume, other people thought it was some sort of stuff..

thanks!

I always have a little chuckle to myself at the people that say vaping is more dangerous than whatever substance they are smoking that it clinically proven to be more risky. Do yourself a favour and don't even try to explain to them if they will not listen to you, let their closed minds stay closed. If they are willing to listen then i've found many people of all ages very receptive to the idea of vaping instead of smoking. At the moment the media isn't really helping our cause with the scaremongering and constant stories about the latest battery blowing up because either the owner is using the wrong charger or bought a cheap Chinese knock off without any protection. Carry on doing your own thing and let the others eventually catch up or give up.

I cannot answer your question about what I would think. I had more advanced stuff a few years ago when people were still getting pulled over for using their e-cig in the car but I do think that it is becoming more socially acceptable. People are becoming more aware of what it is even though most of them still have wrong information about what the device does and how it works.

There are still the complainers in public who see vapor, think it is smoke and then throws a huge fit but I get more jokes and negative comments from smokers.

Probably what everyone else thinks when they see mine, that it is for something illegal :p

Are ecigs socially acceptable? Why or why not?

Depends, but I'd say no for the most part. It is still relatively taboo.

What can we do to make it socially acceptable?

Continue educating people and using our devices in public (only where allowed though). Eventually people will be desensitized to the sight of one. Also, educating people about the real, unbiased research and the benefits of smokers switching to an ecig.

Judging by the looks I get; definitely not socially accepted. Some curious looks. Some puzzled looks. Some very skeptical looks. Some evils eyes. Some "poor soul" looks.

I don't think we can make vaping socially accepted/understood through any specific action. That is all down to numbers. When people get used to seeing it, they ... well... get used to seeing it.

The way people reacted with facial mimicry and body language caused me a bit of angst at first. Now I've come to the conclusion that it's not my concern to uphold other peoples conformity bubble and ensure they are only surrounded by "safe" things, familiar to them.

More are started to recognize it, and more are assuming that it isn't for something not legal, but it isn't socially acceptable here. Don't think it'll ever be really. Everyone from my generation, a generation before mine, and each generation after mine have been raised to view smokers as degenerates who don't care for themselves or others. Since the vapor resembles smoke, I don't think the device being used to create it is ever going to be acceptable here in NY. Our politicians have given it the same legal status as smoking here, on the basis of looks alone, and judging from those waving their hands in front of their faces and coughing that ridiculously fake cough when they pass me on the sidewalk and see it, we have a long road ahead of us.

I think for those who aren't into it, the big mods can look quite frightening. And for those who only smoke, people sucking on cigalikes look silly.

My husband thinks all our larger mods look like sex toys. Does't stop him at home, but on the go he prefers cigalikes. So far, he's actually been converting smokers on his softball team with them. I don't think they think cigalikes look silly, but my husband is certainly wary of pulling out his Provari in front of them.

If I'm out in the great outdoors, I vape away completely unconcerned about what other people might be thinking. As long as it's not directed at someone they have nothing to complain about. I think the more of this people in general see, the more accepting of it they will be.

As long as we don't force it down someone's throat, they've got no dog in the fight. I don't, however, see it ever being "socially acceptable" but see it as being tolerated. Just like when we smoked there will be a stigma attached to it.

The first time I saw one, my boyfriends friend (who does illegal stuff) had one and I thought he was doing that and gave him a dirty look about it. I later tried a blu and went from there.

Are ecigs socially acceptable? Why or why not? Honestly I dont think they are. Like I said people think we are doing illegal things. All we can do is get the information out there.

What can we do to make it socially acceptable? Educate people who Question us. If anyone gives me a look and is willing to talk about it with me. I do my best to educate them or ask them to visit CASAA.
I hope with more people learning about them and the more ex-smokers we get the better our chances are. Hoping we can get the Government on our side at some point. Best of luck with your research.

I might be a little biased, but I would honestly say vaping is more acceptable than cigarette smoking; I'm totally over the cigarette-smoke-smell, vaping even smells better.

1) When I had no idea what vaping was, I thought it was weird that people were taking what looked like an over-sized silver sharpie into their mouths, but what did i know? Here I am joining the fun
2) I would say they're acceptable in different areas. People prefer that to analog smoke, but some people are anti-smoke altogether. I'd say if you're in an area that knows more about it then its definitely acceptable, if not encouraged.
3) I think people hate the thought of smoking, without understanding what vaping is, they group it together with smoking so they say "all smoking is bad" when vaping really helps people get off analogs, I think people need to hear more success stories about how they've quit smoking because of vaping, which is much better for your health from what I've seen.

There are a lot of vapers where I live, and you see people vaping at the bars and restaurants where smoking is allowed, and yet even there you find those professionally aggrieved people who just have to complain about it, going to the management because it looks like smoking and they hate it just for that. At one bar my old man and I used to go to there was a nasty old man I could hear telling those with him that my vape was just a nicotine delivery device as they all glared at me. Later on he complained to the manager, who came over to me and lied that he'd had three complaints about my vaping and I had to take it outside. I knew it was only one because I'd seen them talking, and who it was. I never went back there.

That manager was caught cheating at a pool tournament there, and banned those who caught him from the bar.

The first time I saw an ecigarette being used it was by an older handicapped woman at the mall. I saw it for what it was, a way for her to not spend all her time in the smoking section so she could spend that time with her family (she was at the mall with her family). So I had very positive feelings about the ecigarette upon first introduction.

The first time I tried one though I was very skeptical. I didn't think it would be anything like smoking & the one I tried at the mall kiosk was nothing like smoking. But I did realize that it felt more like smoking than I thought it would so I considered that maybe there are better ones that work better.

Now that I am a full on vaper I sort of try to do what that woman in the mall did for me. I use my device where ever I feel like it, but I do it respectfully. I don't think they are socially acceptable right now. But I think that as the public sees more people using these devices publicly there will be opportunity to affect the image vaping carries and I want to be a part of affecting the image.

I agree with stevegmu, smoking of any type has been too demonized in the US. Hopefully, over time, that will change as e-cigerattes, or I prefer to call it, vaping, becomes more known.
As for social acceptability, I have reached an age where I really don't care if people accept what I do or don't do. As long as I am not causing harm to others it is my business (gosh, I sound like a Cialus commercial).

I just got back from a road trip. I vaped from texas to tenesee and back and the only time people even looked at me funny was when I got back home to texas. I think they are more socially acceptable than they used to be, but it will become more acceptable the longer they are around. A lot of people don't know what to think of them because of a lack of personal experience with them, in time they will be more commonplace. As long as the FDA doesn't get rid of the devices that is.
