I got my first e-cig, and quit the same day.

I smoked 2.5-3 packs a day for 18 years.

Sometimes it was hard, and I just bummed a regular cigarette, almost made myself puke, and remembered why I quit in the first place.

Every time I go some where with smokers I have to go home, brush my teeth, change clothes and take a shower, because I can not stand the smell Not sure why I have to brush my teeth, but the smell of regular cigarettes makes my teeth feel icky.

    Somewhere between here and there
Ecigs helped me quit cigarettes for the first time in 23 years of smoking and trying other NRT's. I am one of a few that vaping alone did not do it completely for me. I cut down gradually on smoking and after a couple months was able to vape only. After a couple months of vaping only, I was craving something else besides nicotine. Alot of people are completely satisfied with vaping but I found that I still needed the whole tobacco alkaloids to keep me level. I substitute vaping with swedish snus which is 98 percent safer than smoking. That gives me what I was missing but I still vape for the physical end of it and like you I enjoyed smoking. I do still use high strength liquids but just alot less of it. As you know, everyone is different and it is just a matter of finding what works for you. This I can guarantee. If you vape and not smoke, you will feel better, breathe better, and your tastebuds will change for the better.

Wife and quit our very first day using ecigs. I smoked 45 years and was at 2-3 packs a day. Some quit right away. Others may take a while.
We tried the patch and the Chantix, each twice. Didn't do it. These did. Haven't had one cigarette for a year now!
Oh yeh, welcome to the forum suzej!

Wow, this is so encouraging! Thank you for the kind welcome.

I'm busy reading the sticky threads in this forum. It's rather overwhelming!

Was it difficult to decide which e-cig and nic to go with when you started?

I have been through a few PV's but that was just convenience, and personal choice. I COULD still be using my first one.

Juice is a totally different story. I started by getting juice that "was like" the analogs I smoked. WRETCH. I have since tried MANY different juices. Everyone has different taste buds, and they will change once you stop smoking, so taste of juice is VERY subjective.

Oh yeh, welcome to the forum suzej!

I tried the patches, gum, and perscrption pills. NONE of it worked, but my PV did the trick the first time I put it to my lips.

    There is hope.

BTW my dentist told me that nicotine gum is the WORST thing in the world for your teeth. I had never had a cavity in 35 years, went to the dentist he said I had 2 giant cavities and asked if I chewed nicotine gum. I said yes, and he said that nicotine gum eats up tooth enamel almost as good as his dental drill.

I had GIANT cavities in my back teeth from chewing it for a little over one month.

Wish they put that on the label.

Suzej - You'll find there is no question you can ask that hasn't been asked before so don't hesitate. This world of e-cigs and nic juice can't be overwhelming to say the least, but we've all been down the same path and experienced the same confusion.
You've found the right place. Ask away.

I thought I liked to smoke... even LOVED smoking. I decided to quit when my father became terminally ill from smoking (how could I continue?). Drugs, gum, etc. just doesn't work.

It takes a while to switch over for some people... just try to replace some of your smoking with e-cigs each day and eventually it becomes easier (it took me about a month to really plug in, and then a while to find liquids that worked for me. I've been vaping for 16 months and while there have been a few bumps in the road, I'll never go back to smoking.

First is finding your perfect nicotine level (I settled in on 18mg, but used 24mg liquid when I really wanted to light a ciggy by dripping it into the cart/atomizer). Next is finding good flavors you enjoy which will help replace the smoking urge (menthol worked for me even though I never smoked menthol cigarettes) and supply the same satisfaction to keep you from smoking. There are lots of liquids to try out, and really, it is fun! Make sure you purchase liquid rather than only using prefilled cartridges. They don't last long and you'll need to top them off often.

Just try to remember that success is defined as each cigarette you avoid. Welcome to ECF Suze.

    Welcome suzej

I smoked for 30+ years, and haven't had a cig in more than 6 months. It took me awhile to completely switch over to vaping (about 6 weeks). I wasn't trying to "quit" and wasn't willing to stress over it, so over time my desire for and cravings for smokes decreased.

There's no need to use the nic gum with vaping- you can set your nicotine levels with the e-juice that you buy. you'll probably want to start with a range of nicotine levels to see what works best for you. If you choose, you can slowly wean yourself down from the nicotine as well.

hi and welcome.. i use a 510, and very pleased with it..If i were u I would get a PT /pass through. I wish I had one..the batteries on these dont last very long..and sug. getting extra empty carts for diff flavors. It is also a luxury to have an extra atty or 2. or u can try a box of cartomizers/ cartos. and if u can try banana nut bread.. it is the only thing that tastes good to me right now, and been vaping for a month..everything else tasted pretty good at first. but everything tastes better than smoke. good luck!

I have to say, switching to e-cigs was so much easier then I ever thought possible. So much you can do with e-cigs. Smoke juice mixing is a blast. I am sure I am wasting some money as a result, but it now seems to be more of a hobby then an addiction. I am starting to narrow down my prefrences. I currently have the blu cigs. Works okay and will be good for driving as the pack will keep the batteries fresh. My Joye 510 should be here any time now, hoping today.

    Good luck and enjoy.

Congrats on your decision to quit! Also on contemplating buying a 510. About the 510: great model, but I'd recommend you go with cartomizers (even "mega" cartomizers) rather than individual atomizers and mouthpieces. It's just SOOO much easier and more hassle-free. And you want that - especially when you're just starting off.

I found it fun to experiment with a lot of flavors in the beginning searching for that perfect everyday "smoke." LOVED menthols even though I didn't smoke menthol - many people are that way. Great throat "hit" when you vape 'em; replicates a cigarette nicely.

You can find some pretty amazing flavors over at the NHaler website (voted best overall supplier by ECF!); sample some by ordering the small sizes. French vanilla coffee-out of this world.. Their Marlboro and Kent are great replicas for the real thing when you feel like having that. Indulge yourself in samples. Get extra batteries. If you get tired of charging batteries constantly for the 510 buy a Riva battery from them; it lasts all day long and into the next and the cartomizers screw onto the end just perfectly.

Some of the best advice on this form: Don't tell yourself you're quitting. It just stresses you out to think that. Instead, tell yourself you're just switching to a new brand. E-cigs are your new brand. Keep some 36mg stout stuff handy for when you feel like you need a cig; you'll be surprised how quickly that goes away with a few drags off some 36mg.

Good luck! You won't be sorry!

Ouch on the cavities, oettinger! I didn't realize that nic gum did that and have considered using it in conjunction with the e-cigs. Thanks for posting that.

I can see I need to read the abbrev. thread :)

    Hey suze,

If you see an abbreviation with little green lines under it, like PV, atty or batt, hover your curser over them and the meaning will be displayed. I still have to do that sometimes.

I've only been at this for a few weeks. For me, quitting cigarettes seems a bit optomistic, but I've been unemployed for several months; don't want to smell like an ashtray during an interview, need my house to stink less so I can put it on the market, etc. (Accepted a job offer yesterday; yaaaayyy! Moving to Iowa; ooohhhnnooooo! But I digress) I've cut back cigarettes by more than half with no effort whatsoever. I've also cut way back on coffee (we're supposed to drink lots of water). I've been having really wierd dreams, and a bit of insomnia (I just get up and smoke a cigarette, then right back to sleep), but otherwise no ill effects. I can actually envision myself completely quitting in time.

    Good Luck!
