So, the title says it all. Have you had trouble convincing your family and friends that your no longer smoking but vaping instead? I live with my parents still (going to college) and I've tried explaining and educating them about what vaping is but I'm prettty sure they've lumped personal vaporizers and cigarettes into one category, thus...I still haven't "quit" smoking to them. Which doesn't bother me, I mean the only person you need to worry about convincing is yourself in the end. They both used to smoke, my dad quit cold turkey many years before I was born and my mom quit using chantix about 7-8 years ago so they probably see it as a "cheap" way of quitting smoking but it is what is. Just wondering if any of you guys and gals have had similar troubles regarding this and if so, share your story :D

Everyone in my life has been extremely and overwhelmingly supportive since I switched six months ago to vaping.
Except for my dad.
He was forced to quit a 2-3 PAD habit cold turkey due to a lung and chest issue.

In his eyes, I've yet to quit. Trading one addiction for another. Yada yada yada.

But, I don't put much stock in his thoughts as I have NEVER, in my 25 years, heard him say something genuinely positive about anything. The most pessimistic person I know.

But, the most important thing, Jamez, is as long as YOU know that you quit and are already becoming a healthier person, that's really all that matters. :)

I mean my family is still supportive, I just think that they haven't really distinguished vaping from smoking. They know the two are different and that one isn't "quite" as bad but that's about it lol. Thanks for the kind words man :) It's great to know that even if no one else supports you there's always the fine people here at ECF that will.

For the most part my sons know about vaping actually got me to give it another try.
Believe it or not I get the most support from my coworkers.
A quick story one day as I was outside vaping with the smokers
one of my co-workers turned and said "u ddin't start smoking again did you?"
My reply of course was no. On the other hand i have a friend while she acknowledges that
I have quit she does ask from time to time when " when are u gonna stop that; or one day you will be able to stop that".
The friend quit using chantix.....
So mostly positive

Not only are my family and friends convinced that I've quit smoking, they are also incredibly supportive (especially my wife). In fact my brother has been so impressed by my ability to quit a 22 year addiction that he is going to start vaping next week. The way I see it if there is someone in my life who refuses to support me, then I will have no problem cutting ties with them. After all I gave up over 4000 toxins, giving up one toxic person will be easy in comparison.

My family is totally convinced that I have quit smoking. I only wish that my friends were as agreeable. The smokers seem a bit leery of it, which I chalk up to the press and its penchant for misinformation about vaping. The non-smokers either treat it as if I've made no change at all or tend to make fun of vaping.
Yeah I can sympathize with you. The few friends that I do have (and also know that I vape) don't really show much interest in it, or they still think that I smoke lol. You just can't convince everybody :p

That's true. That's generally how I look at it as well.

The only person I've had a problem with is my daughter in law. She said "Oh. So you're still smoking." But since she lets me vape in their house with no problem at all, I think she was just being a pain in the ..... :) My non-smoking (ever) friends let me vape in their houses after some Q&A and 'test smells'. lol Mostly they say it's a very light smell or kind of fruity.

Amen to that!

The grandchildren and husband believe I quit three years ago. :) Everyone else pretty much thinks vaping was a failure because I'm still doing it :glare:

I found that frustrating at first when their initial support turned to disapproval because I hadn't quit vaping along with smoking within 6 months of giving up cigarettes but I quickly gave up trying to change their minds and after three years I just smile and ignore them.

If any of them ever decide to have a reasonable conversation with me I'll be happy to try educating them again but until then they can think whatever they wish. The only thing that matter is that I know I quit smoking three years ago and test done by my doctor show just how much that has improved my health since then. :)

As for my family, they continue to state how proud they are that I gave up da 'bakky. I have to tell 'em that I'm just glad that I no longer smoke and that it was all too easy via vaping. Ergo, no pride here, whatsoever... just an awesome sense of 'freedom'!!!

As for my 'friends', if they questioned me critically... what friends? Haven't lost one yet. In fact, I've v-verted a couple and/or their mates! Talk 'bout bondin'!!!

My family and friends have two choices...

1) Learn about vaping and understand that, without question, I have quit smoking
2) Keep their mouths shut when they are around me

There are no other choices.

Anybody that thinks I haven't quit smoking is welcome to chat with me about it for a few hours.
I"m quite amenable to educating them if I ever see that they haven't learned yet.
:)

When I switched from tobacco to vaping, I had all the info on it and informed my parents. 10 months in and there has not been one time when we see each other that I am not told how happy they are that I quit smoking.
My mother, apparently felt guilty when I went outside to smoke. I never asked if I could smoke indoors I just never did it. Those times when it was rainy or extra cold, my mom used to say I could have a quick puff inside, but I would not do it.
She is SO happy that I can vape indoors!

My family has taken a devastating blow loosing family members from tobacco use in a short period of time. Now both of my parents are smoking nazi's and by rights I should be as well. Well over a year ago I told my parents that I quit smoking. I never told them when I fell off of the wagon out of shame. I haven't told them about my vaping. My wife encourages me to let them know but I don't have the heart for it.
