Puffing on "e-cigarettes" can be a route toward quitting, advocates say, but the practice is clouded with controversy.

By Carolyn Davis
Inquirer Staff Writer

Gregory Conley can't go inside his favorite Starbucks in Mount Laurel to take a few puffs, so he enjoys his habit outside. To passersby, it may look like he is drawing deeply from any old cigarette, but a closer whiff proves otherwise. That's because the newest smoking rage, boosted by "vapers" (that's with an e, not an o), is not to smoke - sort of.

Nice job, Greg, and good PR for CASAA.

Oh, my . . . Greg is indeed a handsome fellow . . . and articulate as well. :)

I love seeing CASAA mentions in the news. It not only encourages reporters to contact CASAA for information and quotes, but it also makes it easy for people reading these articles to find CASAA (thereby getting some accurate, truthful information about e-cigarettes and other smokeless products).

I'm happy with how the article turned out. As I recall, the writer came in with no knowledge of what an e-cigarette was. In both her talks with myself and Bill, she was very inquisitive about how we can claim that e-cigarettes are 99% less hazardous than smoking cigarettes. Considering the tone of the article, it appears we convinced her that the anti's concerns have been massively over-exaggerated.

Great Job, Greg, Bill and Elaine on your comment. I too left one using something that I picked up from a THR email I received today. I thought it was so good that it had to be pushed out-

Elaine pretty well spelled it out. Dozens of quit attempts during my 43 year, 2-3 packs a day habit and none successful for more than a few months. All using all the approved methods. I actually gave up quiting over ten years ago since it seemed that after each attempt my cigarette consumption increased.

My girlfriend convinced me to buy an E Cig which I laughed at but finally conceded to try them. That was nearly two years ago now. The first 7 months I had cut down to about a half dozen cigarettes a day and by that time I was convinced that I could get off smokes. I had to find Swedish snus to get there since it provides some alkaloids that my body needed to break away from smoking, but it did it.

I'm now 16 months from my last drag on a cigarette and that's no drag. I occasionally use my PV (personal vaporizer, another name for an E Cig) and with very little nicotine. I use about 4 portions of Swedish snus, about the about of tobacco in 2 cigarettes and I'm more than content.

I just have to question the true motives of the ?non-profit?"health" associations that keep fighting harm reduction. Perhaps the ACS should change their name to the ASC, American Society for Cancer. It might be more fitting.

emphasis on what I picked up from the email.

Nice article, congrats (and thank you!). Should I be able to see comments?

I would think so, but now I don't see any comments either. Maybe there is a glitch on the site. Let's try later.

Oops. Just discovered that there are two versions posted. This one has a control at the top to access Comments. Smokeless smokers | Philadelphia Inquirer | 05/25/2011

The one without a Comments button (link in the OP) ends in "2011-05-25/news/29582141_1_e-cigarettes-real-cigarette-nicotine" instead of "philly/living/20110525_Smokeless_smokers.html"

Overall a fairly balanced article. Of course the evil ones have to be given the change to spout lies, but at least the article limited it to conventional quitting materials and nicotine itself. really glad to see this was in the philly inquirer. First Philly article I have seen, and its refreshing to see a pretty good one. BIG statement that a cop is vaping happily...the ribbing from colleagues is probably more about east coast culture than specifically about vaping...they probably rib everyone for something, all part of being in Philly.

The longer I live here, the more I realize that Philly is in general a live and let live kinda town. Philadelphia Freedom seems to be a strong part of society here. We do have area-wide indoor smoking bans, but I have not heard a beep from the PA legislators about banning ecigs or snus. And we have several suppliers of these products in the general area. I've vaped in many restaurants and cafes and never had a problem from anyone, although I do try to be at least somewhat stealthy, just out of courtesy. Never had any problems flying out of PHL with vaping gear and juices too.

Lived here for 21 years, and I do not intend to leave any time soon. Philly has been very good to me, and it seems to just keep getting better. And are we having a beautiful spring this year or what?

Not surprisingly, two antis picked up the article for their FB pages.

https://www.facebook.com/smokefreephilly -- Smokers wanting to quit should avail FDA-approved treatment for their addiction. E-cigs are not an FDA approved treatment option - in fact there is very little known about their harmful or beneficial effect on health. What are your thoughts about this controversial device - electronic cigarettes?? Comment and let us know!

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Quit-with-Nancy-Tobacco-Cessation-Program/92381937926?sk=wall -- Interesting article -particularly where it suggests that using e-cigarettes may simply be helping people avoid actually quitting and also encouraging more kids to start.
