It has to be a minimum of 4V because the boost chips used in these things have to have what is called "headroom". Usually it is 1.5v, so your 3.7v battery becomes 5.2v output. Most of these mods then drop this back with a diode in series with the atomiser, hence the 4v.

The only way you can get a wide voltage spread is to use two 3.7v batteries in series, for 7.4v and then use a PWM buck chip to cut back the voltage. Unfortunately, this approach only works in a box mod. Can you imagine the length of a tube that holds 2 18650s in series?

You can make your own VV box mod on these principles for around $50, if you don't want to shell out for a Provari, Darwin or Eclipse.

PS: Sorry, just realised that the Eclipse is a box type device, not a tube.

I will never, ever insult anothers tastes, but imho, and just my opinion.. I am constantly disapointed in how inelegant new vaping mods are becoming. They get bulkier, and stranger and more techy. I understand the appeal and the reasons, don't get me wrong. Vaping comes with such a vast array of choices and variables that the urge to get all those variables under control means getting more and more complex. Add to that battery life and need for batt sizes to hold charges for more hours means it gets all the worse.
But I long for a great vaping experience that a mod can give without the feeling of a complex contraption in my hand, or a huge dildo in my face.
I was hoping the direction of vaping go more towards "cool" and elegant over complexity.
Not that I am criticizing this, please dont misunderstand. This is a great idea, and a great design considering all the variables we have to take into account in vaping. Hell, I'd probably use it myself and appreciate the vape. But I would hide as I vaped in public, thats just being honest.
The pipe mods are the only ones that look "cool" but they are either extremely expensive, or just suck as a vaping tool.
Sorry to hijack the thread if I did. I honestly mean no offense or dis to anyone who gets one of these. Its a great device, I just wish.........

People used to hate power windows, power steering, auto transmissions, and intermittent wipers on their cars. Just things that break. Now they are pretty much standard on all cars.

Heck I remember just a few years ago when they were making cell phone as small as possible now they are making them bigger and bigger.

and speaking of dildos, the EQ is smaller than a Provari, with a big battery standing up. ;)

No worries, you do have some valid points. As design concepts ebb and flow in any market, things change. Remember when all TV's were big and bulky tubes at a 4:3 aspect ratio? Then LCD computer monitors came out, but were still 4:3 and were pretty lame? Then as TV's started to go to 16:9, flat screen, then flat panel, LCD computer monitors did the same, and the prices have all but bottomed out! That's kind of what's happening with vaping. The Eq will lead to some big steps forward. I think serious vapers will look back on it as fondly as we progress technologically and in design.

Well said! I'm thinking the Eq will make my ProVari obselete. Maybe even my GGTS + AVS!

Oh, I understand this is a necessary step. Don't get me wrong, I understand that this type of tech will eventually be slimmed down, and people will begin to worry more about design than function. Right now everyone is trying to figure out how to deal with all the variables and that means big. Eventually they'll get VV and displays down to millimeters of space or maybe even just a tiny chip with mini displays. Once the tech becomes feasable, they'll all move on to looks. Kind of like what happened with computers. Now they are stylish and beautiful..but we had to go through huge towers and bulky screens to get there.
So I get it... I just wish it would fast forward a bit, lol.
But I do wish, with so many mods and gear being still low-tech, that they would focus more on design and form. There are very low tech pvs out there that are still very, excruciatingly ugly. lol. They really have no excuse!

Basilray, thanks for not taking offense, I have nothing but respect for this community and I'd hate for anyone to think I didn't appreciate all that designers, suppliers and reviewers like yourself do for it.

The problem we have with PV is the same problem we have with electric cars and cellphones. Solid battery solution. To have an all day solution it has to be a bit hefty.

Or a more power-efficient + reliable atomizer that requires less strenuous battery consumption.
This entire vapor movement is in its infancy... It can only get better and better.
