My medical practice specializes in community health and family medicine. Regardless of the lack of clinical studies on the long term benefits of switching to e-cigs from analogs, the peripheral evidence and my clinical experience has made it obvious to me that I can improve the health of my cigarette dependent patients by introducing them to e cigs. Years of practice and the incredible failure rate of other cessation treatment options have further convinced me. My anecdotal experience has been very successful so far. I discuss the e-cig option and hand out cards with this site address imprinted. Does anyone have an opinion on the best objective site for patient "referrals" to accompany this forum?

Not really sure what your looking for? In my searches on the web, I mostly found company or supplier sites, nothing about PV's... well at least nothing positive about them. Its mstly political crap so the spin is negative, so is any media you find. With the exception of a few newer news reports. But I think if your turning your patients to the ECF, your giving them the tool they need to decipher what its all about, along with thousands of personal success stories. Good to have another doc on our side. Thanks for being here.
My best,
-VP

PS: smoked for 19 years, tried the patch, zyban, the patch again. Couldnt quit. Bought a Personal Vaporizer with 24mg carts... havent smoked in three weeks and one day! Tell that to the FDA baby!!!!!:D

Glad we got another doctor here, welcome. I can't give you any better links than Kate of course, as she knows the best ones by far & has studies PV probably more than most of us put together. I only hope the future of e-cigs, doesn't depend on big pharm/money/politics.

Yes we are putting chemicals on our bodies we are not sure whatt hey will do 10-20 years down the road. What we DO know is analog cigg's are not for us at all & these do have far fewer chemicals. The short term common sense would be of course they have to be at least some heathier for us.

I smoked betwen 2 & 2 1/2 packs a day since I was 16, for a total of 33 years. Yes I have high BP, can't breath to well in humid weather or after hard work. I know my health is suffering & I have no medical insurance to run to the doctor every couple weeks for something & I also hate pills. I tried patches, gum, going cold turkey, support groups, you name it I tried it. Doctor wanted me to try Chantix, but after reading about that "hummm, medicine" no way was I taking that stuff! I did try Wellbuterin for about 3 weeks, hated it also so I refuse any more pills the doctor wants to give me.

I do still smoke, but I have it cut down to less than a half pack/day & I might vape ALOT! But so far on my own I have been able to cut my BP med in exactly half & keep it below the 130/90 line. I check it twice a day just to make sure & it is close sometimes, but the more I cut back analogs I feel it will go even lower. If I can manage to lose the excess fat on my ...., I can see maybe not needing it at all at some point.

I can also actually walk now at a moderate pace & not feel as short of breath as I used to. It is still there, BUT I really only started this probably 2 months ago, so that is still progress in the right direction from my point of view. I just hope the FDA can see that we are adults, we are old enough to buy ciggs, we are old enough to make our own decisions on "how" we ingest our nic & keep their noses out of it. If these were banned today, I would definitly go back to analogs for satisfaction so the FDA would be doing me a great dis-service.

Maybe you could help and perform your own experiment with your patients?

We would like to. Ironically, a drug study done on humans requires a government stamp of approval, deemed safe (enough) for humans in clinical trials in order to be published. Somewhat of a catch 22. It is likely lab animal studies will be required first to prove safety. We are essentially conducting an informal study by recommending e cigs to certain patients. Device standardization seems to be the biggest hurdle. Some e cigs that are purchased just don't work well.
