So, is the usage of 'analog' for describing cigarettes not derived from the fact that e-cigs are analogous to cigs?
I won't use the term, as I'm not a fan of arbitrary language change, just because someone thinks that it's clever.
However, as has probably been pointed out several times, it makes some sense if that was the original intent.
Analog has two definitions, the root meaning of analog is constant. Something can be something else's analog, meaning analogous. Or, it can mean an analog circuit or signal, as opposed to a digital circuit or signal. All digital is comprised of analog, but an analog device itself is not digital. An old transistor radio is analog, an electric guitar is analog etc...
People don't seem to be saying analog cigarette, meaning analogous, but to be calling it an analog device, which is semantically incorrect.
if you understand what an analog device is, it would be incorrect to call a traditional cigarette an analog.
You wouldn't call a fire analog, and that's all it is. A traditional cigarette isn't sending continuous information.
