Lots and lots of not so good information about Facebook coming out lately. I’ve got my own personal horror story about it. One that I’ve found to be true personally is it’s impossible to actually leave Facebook. It won’t actually let you do it in practice. The best you can do is abandon your account. I may go back to Facebook one day if there is ever meaningful legislation passed that keeps it from abusing its users the way it currently does, but until then it’s a hard no.

Can't speak for America but I am fairly certain that under EU GDPR regulations, a user has a right to be forgotten. Granted this usually means a company can keep things like usage stats, but they aren't allowed to keep personally identifiable information.

Mind you Google just got a rather large fine for not complying (still less than they make in a day in profit though) so I can see Facebook just taking the fine and carrying on!

I do know it's possible to get off Facebook. I copied this stuff from somewhere a few months ago. It's not very clear but it might help.

If that’s not enough for you to feel safe, maybe now’s the time to delete your Facebook account altogether.

That’s somewhat harder to do. If you go through the account settings, Facebook will attempt to push you to “deactivate” your account, which “will disable your profile and remove your name and photo from most things that you’ve shared on Facebook”. Notably, it won’t remove any of your data from Facebook’s servers, and your account lies dormant hoping you will change your mind.

If you actually want to delete your information from Facebook, the real setting is hidden in a help document with the title “how do I permanently delete my account?” Clicking on “let us know” on that page will take users to the real account deletion screen. Clicking “delete my account” will take you to another screen. Filling in your password and proving you aren’t a robot on that screen will finally… deactivate your account. Wait two weeks after that, and then, at long last, Facebook will begin the 90 day process of deleting all your data from the site.

Cool! I may do that. Thx :)

They still have every keystroke you ever made. FB. Even if you delete your account. Don't get me wrong, you SHOULD.

Then, FB sends all your keystrokes to the government for analysis.

I jest. Mainly because the government has all that already, but they may put you on some sort of list.

I posted placenta pictures. A LOT OF THEM, on a hidden FB group, with my gal pals. Before I wised up. I wonder what the government thinks of me now?

I did this. Took me about 3 months to delete 6 or 7 years of history.

Ya know what? I do believe that was the most fun I ever had on FB!

Yes, but there is a big difference between "Access" and actually pouring through the data. Maybe one day a good enough algorithm will change all that, but I'm not sure we are there yet. Because otherwise most school shootings would not exist, it would not be possible to find ah, ladies of the night online, etc.

I'm fairly certain the government only cares about your crimes if a) they are kind of large b) they don't like you for some reason and c) you are sort of unlucky.

I have been FBI investigated twice and background checked on several occasions. I am not exactly as pure as the driven snow but it sort of all went okay.

stols001, we don't know what the powers that be have available to them. And more importantly I don't think that they really care what happens to us, just as long as it doesn't happen to them.

Everyone knows of the supposed terror attack using planes, yet when the planes deviated from their flight plans and turned their transponders off nothing was done. Yet when a teenager took a Cessna for a joyride to the White House to see the president, he quickly gained a fighter escort and was forced to land.

So maybe things happen for a reason, but not necessarily the right one. Just theirs.

I sort of think you just repeated what I said. Etc.

Also I think the transponder thing happened BEFORE the Cessna thing and I think the government got rather SQUIRRELY about planes, etc.

And, I think any kid in a plane who wants to land it on the White House lawn deserves what he gets because his is an IDIOT.

There are more mechanisms to protect the president than most folks I think your analogy is a bit flawed I mean ONE plane hit the PENTAGON for goodness sakes. So it did happen to "them."

I agree that we don't know what the government "has" but I am fairly certain they are not wasting their time going through my old blog posts from college, etc.

I like old hats.

Unless they are Berets, worn by philosophy majors (mostly male, but I think I might have been the only chick major that year, actually. I was told I was the "best" one but I mean the rest of them were like, wearing Berets and misunderstanding Lacan it was not HARD.

English was more of a challenge, but I was up for it.

I am SO not up for FB. Been there, done it.

In my opinion it's like the "new coke" only everyone has already drunk the cool aid. I can't even tell you how many people are on there to "keep up with their friends." Only it's some self-chosen "reality" that is happening. Etc.

I really want to say to those folks, "Try email and the phone it takes longer yeah, but like, don't DO it and see."

My best job reference was my VERY FIRST supervisor, and I tracked him down QUITE easily and we totes remembered each other. I think it had been 15 years since last contact, but I didn't need whatever "job link" site to do it. Dood.
