That's wise choice, but...

Near as anyone can tell, this has NOTHING at all to do with vape purchases, Target purchases, sex toy purchases or anything of the sort. The breach occurred somewhere downstream and is independent of usage. Someone compromised a lot of cards.... a LOT... maybe millions....

And as someone said, I am VERY surprised that I haven't heard about this on the news yet. This is as big, if not bigger, than the Target breach since this one actually has charges so far (Target just says cards were compromised).

did i say it did?? :glare: lol

i had a plan all along to set up a low-balance card for online vendors.. now that plan is in play.

Just do like me and have a 2$ balance in you accounts...

Always know who your ordering from too. I've stumbled across a few vape sites that make me feel uncomfortable. No contact number or information about where in the world im ordering from, sites that look like a project in a 9th grade computer programming class....

First, THANKS for this heads-up.
I might not have reacted quite as quickly if I hadn't happened to see this.
I got hit with the $9.84 charge today. My card co. DID alert me - because I have it set to notify on any international transactions.
The guy I got when I called it in though had NOT heard of the common $9.84 fraudulent charge.
It's a CREDIT card, so I'm not liable to a fraudulent charge, and I haven't YET closed the account - but I put some flags and restrictions on it... Anyway - here's my question:

HAS ANYONE SEEN or HEARD of FOLLOW-UP CHARGES?
The general idea USED to be that if you saw a fraudulent small charge - often pennies - that was a TEST, which would be followed by a bigger transaction once it went through. This one seems more like they're just trying to steal $9 from say a half-million different people...

I didn't leave them enough time to find out. But your right. Why would they need to recharge after a test with those kinds of numbers. My bank said this kind of scam happens every year around the holidays. Im starting to think it was our own govt. Wouldnt shock me I guess.

You need to close the account! It is very common for cards to be resold after they've been used. The next person that buys your card won't charge $9. And since you've had a fraudulent charge and didn't close your account the CC company can refuse to cover any future fraudulent activity on your card. It is much better to be safe. The only inconvenience is waiting for a new card to arrive. Any charges or refunds from the old card number will be linked over to the new card.

And yes, people that didn't catch the charge at first have had other charges made on their accounts. They will charge your card for $9.84 from every one of their sites. My CC company said there is no way for them to stop the payment once it is pending so the thieves will be able to collect more money. I'm amazed that they didn't insist that you cancel your card.

This whole thing is creeping me out...I've had my prepaid debit cards for several years.
I'm halfway wanting to go get some fresh cards for the heck of it and cancel the older ones.

ETA: If my card should get compromised though, they will send me another card with a new number

I found out I got hit today. My charge was for $9.94. From a vendor called CEWCS dot com. Of course, there is no such website. But my bank statement does give me a phone number and location. It's in the UK. I won't be calling the UK, but got my debit card cancelled and a new one being sent. Right now, the charge is only "pending". Once it goes the rest of the way through (prob tomorrow) I can go to the bank, sign an affidavit, and get my money refunded.

I haven't shopped at Target in years. But I do a lot of Amazon shopping and vape shopping.

I got hit on 12/29 twice on the same card. One was from CEWCS.com and the other one was DCWCS.com. The cc company blocked that card and is sending me a new one. This particular card is used at Amazon quite a bit and I have also used it for vape purchases in the US only. My bank was not familiar with the 9.84 charge either. This particular card is from a credit union.

I travel quite a bit and my bank has a new policy for all debit cards. If you are traveling you have to call and tell them because all charges will be blocked otherwise, especially in California. It is quite a pain--however at least they are on top of the fraud on debit cards.

I really think that probably the safest way to shop internet is with prepaid cards, write checks or use cash for everything locally and bury your savings in a safe in your backyard.

So I feel like I'm beating a dead horse as this is my 3rd post in a row here, but thought the more info we have, the better.

The charge of $9.94 was only pending as of yesterday. I knew it would go through and the transaction would be complete as of today. Last night, I called and had my debit card cancelled and a new one is being sent. Couldn't do anything about the fraudulent charge until it completely went through. Which happened this morning.

When I looked at my account this morning, there was no longer a charge for $9.94. Instead, there were 2 separate charges. One was for $9.84 and the other for 10 cents. Both charges together equal $9.94 which was the original single charge. Thought that was weird. I asked the bank clerk why that would happen. She explained that the 10 cents is a fee for international charges. The vendor is based in the United Kingdom.

Oh well. I'm getting my money back and all is well and I know it could have been much worse. Just worried about the future of electronic purchases.

Also got a call from the CC company today!! Got hit with $9.64 from ONWSAC.COM .......... I have not made any vape purchases online in MONTHS... although i HAVE my a couple Amazon orders in the past couple days. Starting to see an AMAZON.COM trend in alot of these "false charges"......... Really glad I came across this thread... I almost chocked it up as a purchase that I made, that I just couldn't remember!!

Heh. I've been hit on both my wellsfargo and Bank of America card. My Wells Fargo card has never been used except at an ATM machine, so it seems like you're not necessarily safe even if you don't buy stuff online. Oh well. On the bright side, both banks recredited the sum into my bank account within a working day, so they are either super efficient, or they've been hit so many times they've already set up a system for it. Who knows.
