I placed the snake on the wild side of the yard where he would have some cover after I was done photographing him.

Lattice is up on the woodshed. I also got most of the trim painted but I only did the outside surfaces on the woodshed and none of the inner edges. Hey, who can see anything but the outside from the road? I'll probably do the roof trim in the dark teal green later on when I have the time. That way it will match up to the rest of the sheds.

The center island was a good ten feet wider and about 15 feet longer than it is now. Since we were bringing in gravel I shortened it up and made it narrower. Also, it was crescent shaped and you couldn't hardly use it to circle around and get back out of the yard through the main gate. Now you can easily make that circle:)

We don't see many snakes. We can get a rattler but haven't had any in the yard, yet. We are careful because getting bitten by a rattler would suck.

Last year we saw a gopher snake, also known as a bull snake, and we saw two of those the year before on different occasions.

We saw the long nose snake dead on the road near our house last year and this is the first time we have seen one in the yard. We had no idea what kind of a snake it was and had to look it up in the field guide of Western critters.

This snake was so cold it was lethargic when I picked it up with a stick. Rusty and Penny were snuffling something and I finally went over to look and there it was. The snake was between the goat pen and the hay shed so I don't know how the goats would react. Maybe they would just be curious.

With the horse, I make sure I snake the rope around on the ground sometimes so that he is used to seeing a snake like object. Hope it helps if we ever see one on the road:)

Do you see a lot of snakes around Lizzie? I'm wondering how the goats and your cute little horsey react to them? I remember hearing that horses are afraid of snakes, but could have just been another of the old wives tales my Mom was so fond of repeating, lol.

You should see the squirrels I feed. They take on snakes. Garter and water snakes are nothing for them but a fun meal.

One day some years ago, I was riding Penny when a fairly sizable snake slithered across the trail right in front of her. I expected her to spook -- she's a spooky horse -- but she just lurched to a stop (so she wouldn't step on it) and put her head down to give it a hard look till it disappeared in the bushes at the side of the trail. This surprised me because I, too, had heard that horses are afraid of snakes. Penny can spook at the most innocent things and then take something like that in stride. She never ceases to surprise me. I think some horses would spook at a snake, but Penny didn't.

Really? Squirrels eat snakes? I thought they only ate nuts. I didn't know they were omnivores. I wonder if squirrels and mongooses are related. I remember reading a really wonderful story about a mongoose named Rikki Tikki Tavi. Apparently mongooses love to kill snakes. I don't know if they eat them, though.

I don't know if they eat them or what but they kill them and carry it off. I think they are defending the area for the most part.

Sandy, I thought that squirrels were herbivores too, until I saw one eating a discarded hamburger. They will eat meat.

A mongoose is a snake killer, including poisonous ones. In India, they do battle with cobras and they don't lose, because they are faster than a cobra.

And smarter.

The squirrels that I raised would eat anything. They loved fruit and bugs and veggies in addition to nuts. I never fed mine meat though.

I have a neurologist appointment tomorrow. That always means a fight because he'll want to peddle drugs that I don't want and feel that I don't need. *sigh*

Well don't you know? You aren't healthy unless you take at least 10 pills a day. Half of them just to counteract the side effects of the other half. Hopefully all goes well for you so they don't have to try peddling more.
