We don't see many snakes. We can get a rattler but haven't had any in the yard, yet. We are careful because getting bitten by a rattler would suck.
Last year we saw a gopher snake, also known as a bull snake, and we saw two of those the year before on different occasions.
We saw the long nose snake dead on the road near our house last year and this is the first time we have seen one in the yard. We had no idea what kind of a snake it was and had to look it up in the field guide of Western critters.
This snake was so cold it was lethargic when I picked it up with a stick. Rusty and Penny were snuffling something and I finally went over to look and there it was. The snake was between the goat pen and the hay shed so I don't know how the goats would react. Maybe they would just be curious.
With the horse, I make sure I snake the rope around on the ground sometimes so that he is used to seeing a snake like object. Hope it helps if we ever see one on the road
