His name is/was Buzz. I didn't pick the name. I had to sell him because he was eating better than me.He was near 30 when I sold him to a friend. I bought him as a rescue horse. He was skin and bones because he was pastured with a dominant mare and he would get what she left. It was really sad to see. I fattened him up and he was so gentle, rarely spooked and loved to run. He was the perfect trail horse. One time we were trail riding and came across a black bear cub rolling in the bushes by the side of the trail. I didn't see the cub until we were right next to it. Buzz wasn't bothered in the least but I sure was because I didn't know where mama bear was so we got the hell out of there fast. LOL! I really miss him and haven't ridden since I sold him many years ago. I had him for 10 yrs.

It must have broken your heart to have to sell him. Since you sold him to a friend, have you kept up with news of him? He was pretty old at 30, so he may not still be alive, depending on how long ago that was.

He does sound like the perfect trail horse. I'm afraid to think if Penny & I met a bear under those circumstances. She would spook at deer hidden in the bushes. But one time we encountered a skunk at the side of the trail, and she paid it no mind. I halted her, trying to decide what to do. He was pretty far off the trail but visible, because it was in the woods, with no underbrush. He was snuffling around in the dead leaves on the forest floor. Finally, I decided we could walk past him and pay him no mind, as he was paying us no mind, and it worked!

Yes, it was very hard having to sell him but I just couldn't afford the board, new shoes (he got new shoes more often than I did.), worming, vaccinations, vet bills, feed etc.... You know what I mean. My friend eventually sold him to a schooling barn so little kids got to learn how to ride on him. That was the last news I got and I doubt he is still alive now. I had a great time with him. I hauled him & my German Shepherd from WA to Montana, lived in MT for 1 summer, then haul him to Colorado and we lived there for 5 yrs, then back to WA. I have a lot of good memories to keep me going. :)

Buzz would stop when he saw a deer on the trail but that's about all. When something rustled in the bushes the worst he would do is take a quick side step. LOL!

Buzz sounds like he was a fantastic horse. I like it when they aren't too jumpy...unlike my little Wiseguy who is constantly scanning the area for trouble.

We have our next lesson tomorrow. The weather is supposed to be cloudy but there isn't supposed to be any wind so wish us luck. Wiseguy is going to try to go downhill with his new breeching on. I checked out the only suitable hill twice and no dogs. The hill has a large puddle at the bottom so that is a bit spooky. I hope Wiseguy will be okay. He doesn't have to get his feet wet if he listens to me and we go to the right but the big question is "Will he listen to me?"

Also, I will not have two of us in the cart when we go down the hill. Wiseguy is pulling twice is weight or a little better with the two of us in the cart and I won't have him being shoved down the hill by our combined weight. I am certain the trainer will understand that and get out to walk down the hill.

Driving is a part of horsemanship I'm totally unfamiliar with, but aren't there brakes on some carts so when you go downhill, you can use them to slow the cart?

Also, I know you don't have much water around there, but it might be a good idea to teach Wiseguy to walk through water if you need to sometime. I wouldn't suggest it when you are trying the new breeching, but maybe on a lead rope sometime, go to the puddle and get him to walk through it.

Have fun tomorrow! I can't wait to hear how it went.

The latest tutoring report.

I started with the little girl. She had a book to read about Chinese New Year, which is approaching. It was hard for her, but she got through most of it, and I read the last part to her when I saw she was tiring. I got lots of new words for her to learn, and selected 10 for her to study and know.

Then it was the boy's turn. I showed him what I had printed out about the contemporary conjoined twins. He read part of that and looked at all the pictures. He was fascinated that the girls could do so much, like ride a bike, when one controls her side of her body and the other controls the other side. It truly is amazing. When they got their driver's license, they each got one, and they had to take the test twice. Their mom wondered if they got pulled over for speeding, who would get the ticket. We discussed that anomaly. I thought, since they had 2 driver's licenses, maybe they'd get 2 tickets. What do you think?

Then we looked at maps to locate Papua New Guinea. I admit I only had a vague idea where it was, myself -- somewhere in the South Pacific. But now I know. Teaching is such a learning experience! BTW, it's just north of Australia, and the western half of the island is part of Indonesia. The eastern half is Papua New Guinea. So then the boy told the story we studied last time w/o looking at notes. He even remembered a detail I forgot! Next week, the authors of the little tale are visiting the school to teach the kids hand signs to go with the story. I told the boy he's going to have to remember them, since I won't be there to see the way he should use his hands. He will have to recite the story to the class at the end of Feb. That's lots of time to prepare.

Last, we went over some words he didn't know from reading about the conjoined twins. Those are homework.

Then we did a Mad Libs with his sister, and it was time for me to leave.

When I got home, the last of the 4 movies I ordered for their birthdays arrived. They have birthdays close in the beginning of Feb., so I'll present the 4 movies as a shared birthday gift. I wrapped each individually, and each kid can open 2, though I'll say they are all to share. I also printed out the movie questions that I hope they will think about and then they can see the movie and write a review, based on the questions. These are:

Did you like the movie?
Why?
What was it about?
What was your favorite part?
What was the scariest part?
What was the most interesting thing in the movie?
Would you tell a friend to watch this movie?

Do you think it's bad to give a gift that's going to be homework? I think watching the movies should be fun enough that if I assign homework based on it, it won't be taking away from the gifts too much. Oh, yes. The movies I finally got are: ET, Babe, Shrek, and Polar Express. I realize Polar Express is a Christmas movie, but I see no harm in them watching it after Christmas. If they like it, then they can watch it again next December.

I was also thinking of getting something special like a cupcake for each of them with a candle in it and singing Happy Birthday to them. I wonder what flavor they'd like best. Should I get both the same (better for no arguing over who gets which)? Maybe chocolate? Who doesn't like that? I have this planned for Wed., Feb. 5, which is right between their birthdays (one on the 3rd, the other on the 7th).

There is no brakes on this style cart. yeah, I wouldn't mind if he had to go through a puddle just not with the new breeching on.

Hello, fellow citizens--is there a "beauty ring" out there for the X2/spinner batteries? Something that just covers the "ego" threads, but doesn't extend up (past the threads) too high? It doesn't have to actually have to be beautiful; I just need something to cover the threads (and add a little bulk), below, say, a cartomizer (or other delivery device) that's screwed onto the 808 threads.
I'm really hoping you guys can point me in the right direction....

Well, Voltville--they say we may get snow in North FL. The last time I remember that, (to experience it personally), I was a child--and it was great. I am now an adult, and am not looking forward to any sort of frozen pre-cip, or slick roads. It was all right in the mid-west, but I am pre-emptively dreading it here in the deep south. Send us all good vibes, if it actually happens--we'll need it. It would stink if the only thing that folks had to remember the snow would be the body-shop bill.

My solution to fill that space on the X2s is to use a bottom ring I removed from a used up X2 clearo. If you are using a carto, it won't work. If it is to fill that space and cover the threading (which is not as tall as a regular beauty ring) under say, a carto tank, it works.
