I went to YouTube and watched a bunch of them. A couple of things stood out. First, it's interesting that people were so outraged that she was attacked because she's a 60-year-old woman. What if the person attacked is a 20-year-old man?Doesn't that count? Being a 60-plus-year-old woman, it sort of disturbs me that people think we should be treated with softer kid gloves than the general populace. I know the people were on SteelJan's side, but I'm thinking more that we should be on the side of humane treatment for everyone, no matter what their age or gender. Also, most of the people on the videos attacked the cyber bullies with the same kind of insults and language that the cyber bullies are accused of using. Did they do this thinking that the bullies wouldn't understand anything else? Or are they stooping to the level that they are criticizing in the same breath?

Anyway, this whole thing is very disturbing to me, and it's making me think a lot about human nature and what it all means.

Yep, I noticed the same thing and I had the same feelings about it. It doesn't matter her age or gender or anything else. Nobody should be treated that way whether they are little old ladies, strapping guys (and especially squirrels).

Your last comment made me chuckle. Thanks for the brevity when I'm getting all heavy-hearted.

The human nature part I might be able to help with. Society tends to sympathize with those who are seen as weaker because of age or disability or what-have-you. (I'm not going into the "gender" issue. They don't pay me well enough here to take that kind of abuse.)

So, an attack on someone like that is seen as more egregious than if it happened to someone like me, for example. Not that society wouldn't see it as wrong, but the level of outrage would be less.

I'll let others debate the right or wrong of that. I'll just do the psychology stuff. :)

Everyone knows what it's like to be bullied and picked on. We can all relate, so sympathy for some kind of mistreatment we can relate to is close to the surface. And SteelJan was such a nice person! There's nothing I ever sensed in her that got my back up. Others feel the same. It's just so illogical.

does anyone have the original video I can see the linked one is private?

I think SteelJan withdrew all her videos from public viewing, so I'm afraid not. Take my word for it. It was a quick, innocent remark. She was talking about measuring the voltage (or ohms or some such energy measurement) and said something about the length of the wire matters, and you shouldn't use a long one like some reviewers do.

Apparently, that comment was taken by some people to mean a certain other reviewer, and he and sympathizers of his rebutted, some rather viciously. It's all so silly, when you think about how it started. She never named names, so how did this guy know it was about him? Maybe there was some previous disagreement about the length of wire that's appropriate? I don't know if there's more of a backstory.

I did see the response vid from the guy that thought he might have been the target. I thought that he actually handled it pretty well. He didn't name names, nor did he get mean about it. He merely showed the voltage (or whatever) of the device he was measuring with.

I think the big problem was his supporters. Some of them (a minority, I believe) went over the deep end.

There could be more to it all, but that's all I managed to see when looking up this whole mess.

I agree, TK. A lot of people see it as more shameful to pick on children or the sick or older people. I think that is what the video posters were going for. Look at you, you're going after someone who is the age of your mother or grandmother...and you should REALLY be ashamed of yourself.

Good Morning everyone!

Today is my TWO year anniversary of being analog free - I am still amazed that, even though I wasn't intending to quit my decades long habit, I quickly discovered that I exponentially preferred eCigs.

My gratitude is high for each of you as your suggestions, tips, tricks, and humor have made this transition absolutely a delight.

I also want to publicly thank Smokeless Image for being so Customer Driven -

IMAGINE & Customer Service keep their fingers on our pulse and accesses the needs and wants of our community, then processes them through their mystical algorithm resulting in products, services, and offers that far exceed our expectations.

CONGRATULATIONS Proudlion!! Wow, two years. You were on the Offical SI thread when I found it and were one of the first to welcome me, as well as sending me a friends request. Glad we're both still here and vaping hard.

Nice rule of thumb: Before you post something, pretend that your parents were going to read it too (and know it came from you).

--If you wouldn't say something to someone's face, don't post it either. [That's a really good rule for emails too]

--I can say whatever I want. That doesn't mean that I should say whatever I want.

*the squirrel scampers off the soapbox*

Great post TK. Problem with those creeps is they probably don't care what their mother thinks and she probably doesn't care what they do. Otherwise they might have been raised with some form of manners and respect. I could make a few comments about their fathers if they know....I think I'll quit there. I'm starting to get down to their level. They're not worth one of Jan's toenail clippings or space in our heads. I just hope she'll be ok soon.

Afternoon Voltians :) Haven't been around in a while but hope everyone is doing well.
I just wanted to stop by in hopes that SteelJan might check-in...
I want to express my gratitude to SteelJan for her informative videos sharing her wealth of knowledge with so many folks. I believe the vaping community has lost an incredible asset and spokeswoman due to the behavior of some childish few. I sincerely hope she knows how thankful we are for her and that she will rejoin this community in time.

LAX! How are you doing? It's been too long since you came around Voltville. Hope all is well with you and yours.

It's just too bad that some low lifes are allowed to say things like this with impunity. The old days some cowboy would hunt them down & decorate a tree with them.

That's what they like about the internet. They can get away with things somebody would lynch them for in rl.

In Florida battery on a person over the age of 65 is a 3rd degree felony. Very amusing when you read about some would be victim in his mid 70s handing some thug in his 20s who tried to carjack him his .... and pinning him down until LE gets there. Some old Vetrans don't have anything better to do than hang out all day at the Gym, Dojo or the Range.

And in this case, it's not brute strength that counts, it's emotional strength to ignore the abuse and not feel threatened by it. In some cases, older people might be better at it than younger people, since they've had so much more practice enduring the slings and arrows of life. I think it really depends more on the individual, though, than on the age or gender of the person.

From my personal experiences in life I can tell you that there is no level of cruelty that I am surprised by. Not to say that I'm not amazed everyday by the behavior of certain people...but I have come to expect absolute horribleness from humans in general.

EDIT: Yes, I realize that I am a human, as well. That's why I'm so self-loathing. :p

I agree. Unfortunatley I constantly fight the urge to become combative in some situations. That's not the kind of person I want to be but at one time in my life it was necessary for both physical and emotional survival. I'm workin on it.

You have to remember that people can be generous and kind-hearted and altruistic, too, though. And it's up to each person to try to be the good kind and not the bad kind. Not that we all haven't made mistakes and been the bad kind at some point, but we have to be aware of what we're doing so we can improve. So, no self-loathing. You just have to try hard to be good, not bad, as much as you can.

You're doing a good job of it. I have never seen you be verbally combative here. What you do physically beyond this group, I have no idea. There's a fine line between standing up for yourself and being so assertive that you get yourself in trouble. It's an issue most of us have to grapple with in some form or another, I think.

Wuzz, I loved the story a few years back about the guy who tried to pull off a carjacking with a baby in the car. Mama, in her righteous indignation, took a Club (the theft deterrent thingy) and broke both his legs. He was screaming for help before she got through with him. Yeah, love that story.
